Brad: "Day 21/365" - to Gray Rd and back

Brad ran today as he thought I could not make it!!

Day 21/365 Challenge by margcurtis13@hotmail.com at Garmin Connect - Details

Ben Day30/365 Bruxelles avec une hangover and 3 days Garmin updates

Last day in Brussels today - a bit of a slow start.. did not want to get out of bed.
Last night was probably the most impressive corporate do I've been to - not the fanciest, nor the most distinguished guets list perhaps, but simply quintessentially European stlye, flair and that certain je ne sais quoi... our dinner reception was held in an old (almost derelict) church. Champage reception with canapes - de rigeur of course. moved into dinner - pianist sat where the alter would have been, subdued lighting, circular dining tables - very simple... waiters/waitreses anticipating and taking care of everyones needs... two of the waiter, and two of the waitresses then launched into an opera whilst serving food and drinks! - it was truly a magical experience. Turns out they were from the Paris Opera and they entertained us between courses, walking around the tables for over an hour! - I was captivated. I want to eat at least once a year with folks singing opera bravo to Gerard and Kathleyne for coordinating and organising such an impressive, memorable evening. (quite randomly Nicky - the last time I saw the Paris Opera was in the Sahara this year! turns out for £4,000 the four of them will sing over dinner for an hour!)

anyway - a wonderful evening lead to a somewhat inevitably slow start this morning! I woke up early, head pounding, laid in bed for another hour wondering if I could somehow sneak a run at lunchtime intead, or before I had to leave for the airport to fly home this evening, all good ideas until I realised I'd have no where to shower afterwards, so out I staggered into the early morning commute in downtown Brussels. I ran the reverse route of what I'd done the evening before.. by the end of the run I was quite enjoying it again...

It's been wonderful running in Brussels - welcome variety and nice to explore new parts of the city. Look forward to future running opportunities in other countries. Right now, Marg and I have a date in Fort Lauderdale in the new year - I've already been in contact with a FL running group to arrange a run one evening Marg - they've said we can join them around the canals!!

I like this Garmin record - on the far right hand side of the route, you can see the slight double back I had to do when I ran through the US Embassy securty cordon! the actual location is off by perhaps 10-15 feet, but the detour is in there - this will make me smile for a few more weeks!

Marg: Day 21/365 Challenge - to Gray Rd and back

Feeling like crap today. Only did the bare minimum for me and then crawled back to bed. Surprised that I did not really feel too bad while I was running, but crashed pretty quickly when I got back.

Charles: Day 24/365 & 25/365 - Tuesday & Wednesday

Day 24 and back to the routine.

The drive home from Crianlarich was more interesting than the run. We drove home via Loch Lomond and I almost crashed the car with laughter when the wife said "Wonder if we'll see the Loch Ness monster". The tears of laughter were streaming down my face when I said "The name gives it away ya choob, it's the Loch Ness monster and not the Loch Lomond monster".

The rain had never halted for 2 days and the roads were completely flooded and blocked so we kept getting sent on detours via some desolate roads. We were never happier to see civilisation again...even though they had 2 heads and walked with limps. Sorry, but I was driving through Bearsden, Glasgow on the way home and the car doors were well and truly locked.

When we eventually got home, unpacked the suitcase and with a stinking head and chest cold, I decided I better go for a run but I wanted to make it as short as possible in the wind and rain. The run was tough going and I could hear my chest wheezing quite badly. All my muscles and joints were aching so I had a nice warm bath when I got home and a lovely cooked dinner.

The details of my Day 24 run can be found at Day 24/365 challenge

Day 25 and back to work :(

I went for my usual lunchtime run at work and again with a chest cold and strong winds I really struggled. It also seems to have given me sore hips and a tender right knee. Not much more to say about the run other than I hated every step of it!!

Todays bad experience and aches and pains ain't going to stop me on my quest to complete the run365challenge!!

The details of my Day 25 run can be found at Day 25/365 challenge

Charles: Day 23/365 - nearly 7 miles of the West Highland Way

Day 23 and begging for the wife's permission ;)

Well folks, where do I begin??

After checking into the fantastic Crianlarich Hotel on the Sunday night, I checked with the receptionist what runs were available and where did the WHW route start?, How far? Where's the finish?

To my ecstatic delight she told me it started just across the road from the train station, was about 7 miles long and the section finished in Tyndrum near to the Big Green Welly Shop. You could imagine my smile and my pleading with the wife "Please, please, please can I go for a run on Monday morning and you can pick me up in Tyndrum, pleaaassssseee. I'll do anything thing you want". She agreed because she didn't want to see a grown man cry if she had said no (or perhaps she was on a promise, ding dong lol)

Well I had a hearty, but light, cooked breakfast in the morning and set off on my run at about 11.30am. I had no intention of winning any prizes by trying to run the route as quickly as possible. I wanted to take my time and relish in the scenery and take photos.

The run itself was in the pouring rain and had massive big hills that even I sometimes gave up trying to run. There was massive big puddles, flooded trail paths alongside river banks and slippy, slippy rocks underfoot and mud everywhere. Did I complain? Not once and loved every single step of the run because the scenery was breathtaking :)

I'm so glad and grateful for my Asics Gel Trail Lahar Goretex trainers but even they couldn't keep my feet dry. They were extremely grippy in the mud and hard trails and protected the feet and ankles from the rocky surfaces.

The only down side to the run, if any, was that I had a cold and was a bit wheezy going up the really steep hills and I got cramp early on in my left calf muscle with running down some of the steep down hill sections. I managed to run through it though.

The details of my WHW (Day 23) run can be found at Day 23/365 challenge

Charles: Day 21/365 & 22/365 - Saturday & Sunday

Day 21 and the start of a long weekend away

I decided to go for an early run from the house to the market in Dalkeith town centre. It was freezing cold, blowing a gale and I'm sure I lost some brass genetalia along the way. The run went exceptionally well considering that I could feel my chest hurt as I breathed in the cold air. After the run, me and the misses went for some lunch before heading over to my dads in Fife.

The details of my Saturday (Day 21) run can be found at Day 21/365 challenge

Day 22 and an early morning run at my dads house

The day that the misses and I were travelling up to Crianlarich for a few nights so I decided to go for an early morning run because it would be dark by the time I got there and I had no idea if there were any pavements or street lights in the area. The run was really tough going because it was against storm force winds (gusts of over 70mph according to the weather forecasts). With every step forward I was beginning to really struggle and by the time I got to the end I was totally exhausted. Fantastic resistance training!? Perhaps not!!

I also felt the start of a head cold coming on because my sinuses were blocked up and my head was throbbing behind the eyes and along the cheek bones. It wasn't going to stop me completing my run!!!

Marg: Day 20/365 - Snowy run on Smokey Ridge.

Snowing, windy, wet, even if I was feeling well it would be difficult to say that this was nice and since my nose is running like a tap it was pretty miserable. 33oF out with a wind chill down to 22oF. I think I might run a hot bath as my feet are soaked through and I am really wondering why I am doing this. I hope my food pod will arrive soon. I really take a lot of encouragement from all of you who are days ahead of me, not to give up. Thanks everyone.

Ben Day29/365 still en Bruxelles

A long days work today with colleagues from across Europe which is always refreshing and reminds me how great it really is to work in such a diverse outwardly looking company. I was itching to get out and hit the streets this evening though, just to clear my head before dinner, but also, autumn/winter evenings in cities across Europe are just a great place to be around soaking up the invariably cosmopolitan atmosphere, and Brussels tis evening didn't disappoint. Lots of glass buildings/architecture, long wide sweeping boulevards etc.. a long lazy loop around the park area, though I widened it a little this time. Highlight was inadvertently trying to run through the secuirty cordon outside the US Embassy! You don't need to understand French to understand what the guards were saying to me!

Nicky Day 24/365 Knole Hill & back

Very windy this morning but did an easy 3 miler up Knole Hill & back. Bit muddy where the cows have been down the path but hey, thats why we do trail runs!
Again, due to slow broadband, my garmin will not upload. Will try again later or in a couple of days time when I get back from the delightful welwyn garden city (2 day sales meeting at head office! Wonder what the footpaths of Welwyn will be like?

Day 39/365 - Short slow steady run around pollokshaws

Nothing much to say about this run..
Was performed in the evening after another hard workout at CF. Went into CF early in order to stretch out my tight:
Achilles
Soleous
Gastrocnemius
Bicep Femoris
Piriformis
Glute Max/Med/Min
and Illiopsoais
The list is very long and as the runs go on everything is getting tighter!!!
By performing lots of good stretching I can offset the tightness and get my muscles back to some sort of length that they used to have!
STRETCHING IS VITAL FOR THIS CHALLENGE AND I WILL BE POSTING TIPS ON HOW TO STRETCH AND WHERE TO STRETCH.

Marg: Day 19/365 - Smokey Ridge to 146th.

Wet, cold, windy and dark. What great running conditions. I was not looking forward to tonight. It felt like it was snowing but I am sure it was just very cold fine rain (either that or Marg is in denial). Just went up to 146th St and back through Smokey Ridge. I felt pretty good by the end! My Garmin ANT+ adaptor came today. Just waiting on the foot pod and I will be set to go on the treadmill and still get a record on Garmin connect when the conditions get too tough. Is that within the "rules" to run on the treadmill?

Ben Day 28/365 Brussels- Royal Palace and gardenS

You know you're in the 21st Century when you're in the hub of all things Europe (Brussels), you're using the latest 3G technology, when you can receive email and texts but not send them, when your statei-of-the-art corporate laptop won't alow you to blog like your CEO
Here goes:
Well today constitutes the summation of 4 weeks of running every day and what better way to celebrate than to be welcomed to Brussels by sunshine! I must have been to this city over 50 times in the last 10 years and not once has the sun been able to pierce the usual grey, muggy, rainy cloud riddled skies!! Well hurrah indeed. Dumped my bag in the hotel (just next to Grand Platz) quick change and straight out to the Royal Palace and gardens (after checking directions with bellboy on the door (en francais naturellement!).

The first time I ever came to Brussels was on Eurostar with Anusha for a weekend away. Eurostar had just opened; it was the weekend Princess Diana died :-( It rained then too. Brussels was so impressive to this young couple that we headed to Bruges as soon as we figured out the rail network!

I'm so glad I gave Brussels the benefit of the doubt; every time I come here I find something new and here in the centre it really is beautiful. It claims to be Europe's greenest capital with 11% of the central area given over to parkland, though it doesn't feel like it to me.

Run today took me through the city's largest park (only a 0.75mile circuit around the park itself?) , over near a plethora of embassies and fine period buildings and cobbled roads. A nice elevated position overlooking much of the city with the sun behind me as I headed back to Grand Platz. And what finer way to end a sunny afternoon with a great run and a pint of Jupiler in the Platz itself.

Cheers!
B

Nicky Day 23/365 - Knole Rd & back.

Popped out for a slow 2 miler to ease the lactic acid from yesterdays mud fest! Cold & gloomy but I was cheered up by Guy Garvey & Elbow booming through the ipod. I will try & attach a You Tube clip of my favourite song that just uplifts me! Not really the right beat for running but it makes me happy!

Marg: Day 18/365 - 3m (almost) around the block

Raining all day today and path covered in many places with a lot of water so it was a bit slow going. Brad came with me today which made it better. At the end we had not made 3 miles which was Brad's goal for the run and so we were running around in circles at the top of our driveway. Must have looked completely mad and the satellite did not pick it up very well so we were successful in adding more time to the last lap and very little distance as well as looking certifiable!!!

Ben Day 27/365 - Belmont Hill in Pitch black

Ben Day 27/365 - Garmin

I've decided that running through a forest in the pitch black is still spooky even with a floodlight strapped to your bonce. It was deathly quiet through the woods... absolutely nothing stirring - not even bats!  - up a short track to the great Redwoods that announce the start to Lord Wraxalls old estate - he planted them in the 19th century after bringing them from the US (apparently) - this guy (and his family) didn't do too badly - they made millions importing bat guano (merde) from Peru into the UK... this was his place, about 1.5 miles from home,  up until recently (he snuffed it about 6 years ago):
Lord Wraxall's old place

Must be getting fitter - I burned past the usual spots where I need to stop to cough a lung up for another 100m (uphill I hasten!) each time.. very satisfying - or maybe it was just being spooked about being in a thick wood bymyself in pitch black that kept me running longer than normal - then I remembered my military training and the number of times I've been up to my eyeballs in the pitchblack with a grin on my face (and being paid for it!) and felt a lot better thinking no other nutter would be out in the freezing cold in the pitch black (dressed all in black) at this time of night! never saw any eyeballs from animals staring back at me either - which is probably a good thing to be honest!!

Good to see Tony is back after an illness.. lead on my liege!!

I'm in Brussels tomorrow until Wednesday night - so my next three updates (when I get home late Wednesday evening) will all be from runs in Brussels!

Great to see everyone getting out of their comfort zone and the highs and lows and the camaraderie we're building between folks who've not yet met and the practicalities of trying to run everyday!!

Nicky Day 22/365 Hell Down South

Ran the really fabulous Hell Down South (part of the Hell Runner series) today. Up bright & early for the drive down to Liphook in Hampshire. Met my friend Tina & ran together. Lots of laughs, mud, hills, sand & the notorious "Bog of Doom"!!
9.3 miles of fun! Around 1500 participants to add to the party atmosphere. Got absolutely filthy & it took 2 washes to get my kit clean, plus a shower followed by a bath to get me clean! Toe nails may take a couple more weeks though. Thank goodness its not summer!!
Fab day all round!

Take Vitamin C and Zinc to keep away the cold!!!

Looking to look after myself while trying to complete the challenge - Bit of advice I was given - Take the recommended daily intake of vit C and also take a Zinc Supplement in order to starve off that cold!!

Tony - I'm here!!!! Days 33-38/365!!

Sorry guys! been really busy this week and add this to not feeling very well all week results in me being not able to keep up with my posting!!
Just to let you know though I have still been running and am about to digest about 5 runs here!! try and stay with me.....
Day 33 and this was me starting to feel a little better after the cold that I have had over the weekend. I do think that we have to watch that we are not doing too much on this challenge. The majority of my runs at the moment have been at the minimum of 5km because I am just feeling absolutely wacked! With this in mind though I decided that I needed to do a longer run so got just under 10km but the legs feel really tired.
Day 33/365 - Feeling pretty tired but know that I need long runs by tcfitness at Garmin Connect - Details
Day 34 and the weather in Scotland has turned for the bad (thats saying something!) With torrential rain and hurricane winds I ventured out with buddy the dog and dragged him round for 5km. His little face looking back at me going 'what the hell are you making me do here??' I couldn't do any longer than the minimum with him so came back home and out of the rain. Cold, wet and not happy - what would normally be a 24min run took 37min with the dog. Note to self...
Day 34/365 - 5km run with Buddy the dog (in the rain & wind) by tcfitness at Garmin Connect - Details
Day 35 and the rain and wind is getting worse. I leave the run all day because I am busy with lots of other stuff and have done the WOD at CF today already. It gets to 7:15 and I know that I have to do it! Jim is my last client and we had agreed to do a hill session - He had no choice - Out we went into the dark and stormy night layered up and did 4 hill repeats in order to build up lactic acid tolerance in our legs!
Day 35/365 - Hill training session with Jim - 4 times up hill close to gym by tcfitness at Garmin Connect - Details
Day 36 and the weather is no better. Started the day with my Mums in the Park class at Rouken Glen park but the weather was so bad that we could not stay in the one place and perform the class for fear of getting blown away! We decided to run around the park and perform some exercises along the way. At one point the weather became so bad we took shelter underneath a a wooden lean to and stayed there for  10min. Deciding that the weather was not going to ease we called it a day and left just as the sun was coming out!
Day 36.1/365 - Small run with the Mums at MITP. by tcfitness at Garmin Connect - Details
Given the fact that my earlier run was not long enough I had to go out after work at 8:30pm and perform my run. With an uneventful run around shawlands I left it at the minimum distance due to the fact I wanted to go home and that I had done some already that day.
Day 36.2/365 - 5km after work just around Shawlands and back by tcfitness at Garmin Connect - Details
Run Club with the greens crew does not disappoint and today was no exception! The weather was still at hurricane level and we layered up and got out again! Deciding to take them along the kelvin way again to keep out of the wind, we ran through puddles and mud and got blown all over the place. Being the leader of the group I flat tyred the faster guys by making them do additional hill reps while the others caught up. We performed some other exercises along the way and then headed back to the gym as we neared the 10km mark. My Garmin battery had died in the night and I forgot to charge it so thank goodness for the garmin app for the iphone, cause if it wasn't for this I would have had to have performed two runs!!
Day 37/365 - Advanced run club with Greens - Garmin fit on iphone by tcfitness at Garmin Connect - Details
Sunday and day 38 of the challenge!! Went to CF today and did the team WOD which involved lots of tough exercises including running 400m sprints with a 20lb med ball!! Ouch. The WOD lasted two hours and thought of doing the run straight after. On second thoughts I thought of food and something to drink first and hoped that another opportunity may pop its head up later in the day! And so it did! Ann was off to choir practice at her old (grammar) school and I thought I would take a lift with her and bomb it on the way back home! As long as it was over 5KM!! Ooooft, more like 8.5!!! not bad time on some of the km's getting close again to running 4min/km comfortably, maybe the being ill and only doing 5km runs helped me to recover!!!
Day 38/365 - Dropped off at Hutchy and ran back to Ann's by tcfitness at Garmin Connect - Details

Rant over!!!
Keep on running!!!

Marg: Day 17/365 Challenge - Hagen Burke Trail

Made sure I got my run in a bit earlier today. Felt like I had leg legs but when I got back and realized that I had taken 2 minutes off my previous time for this run I was quite pleased. It was the run along Greyhound trail and the Hagan Burke trail - I think one of my favorite local runs. About to had downtown now...

Ben Day26/365

Anusha on call this weekend, so just enough time to get out along the cycle path again on the proviso I took my cellphone with me in case Anusha got called into the hospital. Nothng exciting to report, just nice, quiet, pitch black pierced by some serious Hope headtorch wear!

Ben Day26/365 Garmin

watched some interesting video last night from Newton Running all about forefoot and midfoot running. Shorten the gait, up the cadence and lean forward slightly... forgotten what the benefits are, but I immediately felt it in the calves when I tried it consciously this evening... will have to watch it again tonight over a glass of wine!!

Got the Hell Runner tomorrow so today is short & sweet. Slow pace first thing this morning. Made up for it by spending rest of the day doing hard labour in the garden!!!

Marg: Day 16/365 Challenge - Gray Rd

Almost forgot to go tonight! Just before turning into a pumpkin I managed to get in a quick dash up to Gray Rd. I felt great despite the late hour. We are going to head into town for the turning on of the Christmas lights at monument circle. Must get my run done by the morning as Brad will have a fit if I suggest a lone run in the dark around White River Park! While not making remarkable improvements I think my pace is gradually coming down since I started the challenge! I also feel much better! Great idea guys....make sure you register the idea, I think it has the potential to really take off....walk365challenge, swim365challenge, workout365challenge....I have been trying to convince others to join and I think I have a better chance getting them to buy into walking or a workout everyday than a run...each to their own!

Can someone please tell me how I add photos to the Blog? I tried and it just copied over as a line of code.

What's happened to TC?

Where are you Tony? It's been a few days since your last blog :)

Charles: Day 20/365 - Woohoo!

Day 20 and I feel back on track after last nights doubts :)

Tonight's run felt great, even though the freezing cold winter winds are here. The wind chill factor must've taken the temperature to well below zero. I'm so glad that I'd put on my luminous jacket, running tights and my luminous running gloves. By the time I'd finished the run I felt great and could of ran for a good further 5k but decided to edge on the side of caution and not overdo it so I dropped by the wife's work and got a lift home.

My Day 21 & day 22 (Sat & Sun) runs will be at my dad's in Fife and then its off on Sunday afternoon for a couple of days away (Day 23 & 24 - Mon & Tues) to Crianlarich (near Loch Lomond) with the wife so I'll be trying to run a few kilometers of the West Highland Way. I'll take photos of the lovely countryside and upload them to the blog. So looking forward to the break away and chilling out after my daily runs.

The details of my run can be found at Day 20/365 challenge

Ashmei - very exciting!!

On the spur of the moment - (and I'm a sucker for a great softshell) I've just bought a new jacket by Ashmei
ashmei.com
The company has only been in operation for about 3 weeks, but everyone is raving about the quality of their merino softshell kit.. expensive but hey, I'm learning anything half-decent in this running business usually is!
Not sure if they do a laides cut yet which is frustrating since I'm sure the wife would love one too..
Will post a review as soon as I get it and get chance to put it through it's paces.
I'm in Brussels for three days next week with work, so I'm looking forward to posting some Bruxelles city runs through parks upon my return!

Ben Day25/365 - Belmont Hill Woods - Gratitude - GINA KAYE Style!

Ben Day25/365 Garmin

Went for a dusk run this evening just before collecting kids from School and nursery.. Up into Belmont Hill woods - parked up at the top and built a couple of lazy circles through some classic woodland running.

It was under darkening skies and a cool breeze I had a big cheesy grin on my face as I ran - I was enjoying this; birds were coming into the woods to roost, the noise of so many different species of birds jabbering away and calling to each other was simply wonderful and reminded me of why it's GREATto be alive!! - either this or it was a short TED video (by Louie Schwartzberg) sent to me by a paliative care doctor friend in NZ I watched last night that set me thinking...watch it all - it's only 9 minutes or so...and then tell me what you're going to do differently tomorrow - I'm going to smile a lot more than I have been doing recently!!
Being grateful - every day.

Nicky Day 20/365 Golf Course Footpath

Day 20 already - cant quite believe it!!!
home from work a little early so trotted down to the golf club to sort out Alfies Christmas present (may as well sort 2 birds & all that)! Picked up the footpath from the Ash Excellent Eight run around the course perimeter & back through the village home. Nice slow trot.

Leap year?

Is 2012 a leap year, and does that therefore mean we have to run 366 days??

Charles: Day 19/365 - A run too far?

Day 19 and it's the day that I've questioned myself as to why I'm doing this challenge.

I went for an early evening run tonight because I wanted to go to the carvery at lunch time with some work mates.

With a stomach full of roast gammon, 2 jumbo sausages and loads of veg, I found tonight's run extremely hard going with all that food jiggling about inside my belly. To cap it off, it was almost gale force winds and driving rain tonight. I got to the 5k point on my run and thought to myself 'sod this for a laugh' but I kept plodding on to the end because I don't like to give in to my own stupidity!

When I got home I felt knackered but also had the elation of knowing that I've now completed 19 consecutive days of running and I love it...It will take more than my stupidity of eating too much at lunch time to give up this brilliant challenge. Bring on tomorrow and the next 345 days :)

The details of my run can be found at Day 19/365 challenge

Ben Day24/365 Dinosaur quarry bis (night!)

Ben Day24/365 Garmin
Felt in good shape this evening. Was supposed to be in the office today, but my 2 hour commute was seriously threatned by a big lorry fire on M4 Eastbound this morning which would have turned it into a 3 hr commute, so I turned back at Bath rather than just sitting waiting in the trafficjam near Chippenham. I was itching for it to get dark today so I could try the new headtorch - it's simply stunning. Especially in dark woodland! thought I'd trial it in the spooky Dinosaur woods near home - enjoyed it so much I added on the extra quarry variant (or "bis" in French if you prefer!) just to prolong the fun. Heartily recommend this powerful little headtorch. Pace felt OK too - finally feel myself starting to get fitter and legs stronger.
I can thrutch my way through an ultra or two yes, but actually being fit enough to enjoy one is another matter - hoping this challenge might sort that - there's promise yet!

Nicky Day 19/365 Frustrating footpaths

Decided to stop on way home from work & follow some footpaths over beautful countryside near South Cadbury! Legs a little heavy but even heavier after once again I ran out of footpath signs. Up a very steep hill, over a broken style, bashed my way through bushes & nettles & found the path again. Ominously with a rope to hang on to as you slip slide your way downwards!! More broken styles & no more sigsns. Ended up in a field with a dead sheep, lots & lots of pheasants & lots of gun cartridge shells. Time to unplug the ipod so I didnt get an arse full of lead shot!
This was when I decided I was probably trespassing & maybe I should make my way back to the road & give up! 2 miles were achieved anyway.

Day 15/365 Challenge - Drumstick Dash, Broad Ripple

Well Brad and I did the Drumstick Dash 4.5 miler around Broad Ripple this morning along with more than 15,000 other crazies. It was a lot if fun running with a big group like this. 15,000 is a lot for a smaller Indianapolis run. Not as big as some of the Sydney runs I've been in but still a really good atmosphere. The only downside was that they were not really organized for that many runners and so the start was very slow. I was still very happy to make an under 10 min/mile pace overall. Now to undo all the good work with a Thanksgiving lunch!

Nicky Day 18/365 Home to Upton & back

Today was a very looooong day. Left at 7am & didnt get home til 20:45. Spent all day either driving or in a meeting. All I wanted to do when I got in was open the wine & chill! Hmmm!! Actually went out & did a short 2miler to Upton & back & once I was out there, it was lovely to be able to stretch the legs a bit. Legs also not quite as heavy as they were yesterday.
Happy days!

Charles: Day 18/365 - Double Header!

Day 18 and I decided that I wanted to do 2 runs today - one for 7.27k and the second one for 5.1k

I did my lunch time run into a very strong wind and drizzle rain along my usual trusted route (I need to investigate other routes but don't have the time during work hours). The run into the wind was torture on the chest and the breathing but I felt I still had loads of running in my legs so I decided to do an evening run from the house to the wife's work and get a lift home again. Luckily the wind had really calmed down before the second run and I was able to push it a bit harder but felt it in my legs after 4k when a steady incline began and continues all the way to the finish.

Ben Day 23/265 Garmin
Lucky to get a run in at all today - Anusha is on-call so no guarantee she will even make it home in the evening (36 hr on-call), so I planned to run whilst Oliver was having his swimming lesson at 5pm - only to learn the Swim instructor requires parents to be poolside at all times - grr... time for some creative thinking! thankfully, Anusha was able to come home at 7 so I was able to grab a few minutes and dash along the cycle path with the old headtorch (took the new one from it's cellophane wrapper this evening and is currently on charge - according to the reviews, it's like a car headlight shining on the fells and it's only tiny!)
In other news, my min/mile times are improving which is nice! After Monday's dizzy spell, Tuesdays vaccinations (and a mild reaction to the typhoid jab (felt a bone deep chill all day today) I felt in reasonably good shape this evening - happy days ahead!
In the office in Basingstoke tomorrow, so going to try a woodland route near the office Marg told me about!

PS - T-shirts all purchased and winging their way to TC for vinyl printing! will sort monies later when we've got costs sorted. I was able to get the shirts for less than £20 (each) which is great.

Day 13/365 Challenge - Cool Creek North

Raining most of today so I had to wait until later in the evening for my run. Tried to get an adaptor for my phone and a foot pod so that I can run on the treadmill and still be able to log my run, however Dicks did not have them. I may have to send away for them. I was going to wait until Christmas but Brad thinks i am going to become a case study for an "I Survived" episode if i keep running in the dark. The run started well but I got really tired in the middle mile. Still42oF but feels like 35oF. Now to do some work on my knees

Charles: Day 17/365 - Canal Run

Day 17 and ran a route from the work along the canal and back to work.

Another lunch time run at work and rather than run the usual route, I decided to veer of to run along the Union Canal which is relatively flat but has an energy sapping gravel path. The run was 8.3k and by god it felt like it with a lot of lactic acid build up and heavy legs. I thoroughly enjoyed it apart from the dreaded 'joggers nipple' on both nipples that started to hurt like hell, even more so when I had a shower. Need to remember the joggers friend, Vaseline, tomorrow lol

Ben Day22/365 - Cycle Path (again!)

Ben Day22/365 - Garmin
I had every intention of running over at University (Bath) today - I'm keen to try the Skyline route (it looks ace if a little hilly!)
Bath Skyline Route
alas time ran away from me, and after busy day sorting library access, sports access, parking access and lectures and so I'll have to save this storming 10K route for another time. Look forward to it though.

Just enough time for my dead on 5K from home out along the cycle path. Felt a lot better today after my 5k walk yesterday = think I'm going to have to listent oto my body a bit more often to avoid potassium deficiencies and ensuiing diziness. Felt reasonably comfortable ticking along at ~7'30" pace.

In other news, following a review in a trail running magazine I've found and now purchased a new headtorch!! introducing the Hope Vision R4! - awesome bit of kit - can be used on the bike, or on a headband. Decided to spend the money and take the plunge since Anusha (wife) is wanting a set of lights for her bike so she can start training on the bike for a triathlon again over winter. This beast puts out 1000 lumens!!!

Hope Vision R4
It's supposed to be a joint xmas present for ourselves, but Anusha has said I can start using it straightaway - which usually means she'll save these brownie points for when she REALLY wants something!
Looking forward to getting it charged up and using it through the woods one dark and spooky night, soon!

Nicky Day 17/365

I cant quite believe that I have now run every single day for 17 days! It does however feel like it. Lovely evening with beautiful sunset but it was like dragging a sack of potatoes around the country lanes!! Managed a slow 3miles around the lanes of Long Sutton. Hope this picks up as I have the Hell Runner this Sunday & that aint gonna be easy!

Marg Day 12/365 Challenge - Carey Daisy Run

Nice night for a run 45oF and a little bit misty. Knees hurt a bit today after the weekend's runs but after a session at the physical therapist today and a slow shorter run tonight, they feel much better. It is hard to get out there after a long day at work and trying to help Buzz solve simultaneous equations but I am always very glad that I do.

Charles: Day 16/365 - Runnng Club

Day 16 and the Eskbank Rubbish Runners jogScotland Running Club

Another session with the Eskbank Rubbish Runners and we mixed it up tonight with a lot of hill work. I also tried to do a couple of negative split km sections with a recovery 2km sections up very long and steep(ish) hills with a killer hill at about the 5k mark. That hill sure sorted out the strong from the weak and got the blood pumping. You could also feel the lactic acid build up in the hamstrings as you got to the top of the hill. There were a few of them shouting sweary words by the time we got to the top. Great fun :)

Oh, and the run was actually closer to the 10k mark because this choob started his watch and accidentally stopped it and didn't realise until at least 1.5k into the run!!! I find the bezel operation on the 410 a bit too fiddly for my liking but its still a great watch.

Tony Day 32/365 - Got to drive my clients RS6 to her house then run back to the gym

Wow!!
Was really not looking forward to today's run given the fact that I nearly soiled myself yesterday. However, nearly soiled myself for a different matter when getting prepared for my run today.
My 11:30, Elaine, rolled up in her husbands car today -  a hot topic for me and a close friend who would love to buy it from him - and after our session I asked if I could get a lift to where they live and run back to the gym from there. She said yes, but also said would I like to drive??
Does the Pope shit in the woods???
Lets just get some figures about the car -
Audi RS6 quattro
5.0L V10 twin turbo
572BHP
482ft/lbs torque
0-60mph in about 4

So the Run wasn't that bad after that!!!

Tony Day 31/365 - Not feeling very well so performed a short run through Rutherglen

Today was the first day that I have not felt well on the whole challenge. I have been thinking that with all the running and weights that I might be doing too much. So Sunday started with a lie in but felt so sore and flu like that I just didn't want to get out of bed. I put it off and put it off until it was getting very late and I knew that I just had to get out and get it done. Lots of clothes on I left the house and went for a small jog around the block and back. Every step hurt in my joints and I also started to feel the shits come on. Not nice when out for a 5km run. Can't say it was the fastest run I have ever done for reasons that I did not want to soil myself!

Not the way I wanted to celebrate 3 weeks of continuous running today..felt dizzy all day - Anusha diagnosed low potassium (from 3 weeks of running!) and a course of bananas, a cup of tea, and no running - but I'd perked up enough this evening to go for a 3 mile walk along the cycle path.. so I'm hoping this still counts!

Nicky Day 16/365 2m Knole Road

Dark damp evening & some work to do, plus dinner to cook & of course "I am a Celebrity" to watch so it was the minimal distance 2miler tonight. Felt fine - jogged out along the Knole Rd and back via village shop!

Charles: Day 15/365 - Short of time

Day 15 and short of time

I had to take the decision to make my run a short one and under 30 mins because I had try and fit my run into a very busy day. I had to meet the wife at Kwikfit to get the exhaust checked on her car (don't get me started on Kwikfit!!!) and also to go shopping.

The run was uneventful but felt great and I felt really strong which is surprising considering there's now 15 days of running in my legs. Tomorrow is running club night so I better get on planning a 10k route with a few tough hills to mix it up.

The details of my run can be found at Day 15/365 challenge

Day 11/365 Challenge - Hagan Burke Trail

Another run in the daylight!! Went along part of the greyhound trail to the Hagan Burke Trail. I really like that run and now that the Greyhound Trail has been built I do not have to run in the traffic on the narrow bridge over Cool Creek...much safer. It rained for the last mile but the temp was 48oF so still pretty good running conditions. I have a new theory on my Garmin fit app's quirky stats. Perhaps AT&T does not give me continuous connection with the satellite for my GPS location, but an intermittent one? This might explain why the pace chart is screwy and it says that I am not moving when I am? Any other ideas?

Another busy day/weekend/week/month/year today! Oliver had a cyclo-cross race in Cheltenham (in which he won the U8 class (and beat a U10 boy too!) - so we dashed up there, backl to Bristol in time for lunch, Noodle and I did the weekly shop and then out for a 5 miler through the woods. Leaf litter on wet rocks making it really hard - like running on marbles. Frustrating running but pleased I made the effort. Must be rubbing off - Anusha (wife) has just announced she's going for a cycle ride!

Tony Day 30/365 - Advanced run club at greens

Today as every Saturday from now on I take the advanced running club at greens health and fitness in finnieston. In order to change up the class for the runners I thought about running down by the riverside museum. Here we performed some step ups and squats in order to accumulate some lactic acid.
From here we ran into the west end and performed some stair runs outside the Kelvinside art galleries.
Finishing off the run in kelvingrove park at the stairs just to really finish off the legs and then did some tricep extensions off the benches!!!
Really proud of this bunch of runners!!!

Day 10/365 Challenge - Old Meridian

My first daylight run for more than a week! Very overcast but 55oF, so quite good running conditions. Brad came with me today. We did 3.1 miles around Old Meridian. While the Garmin Fit on my iPhone is good for capturing the run time, there are definitely some things that are not right about the stats. Today it said that while the elapsed time was 32:28, it said the moving time was only 18:13. I was moving almost all of the elapsed time so the moving pace is much faster than it should be.

Ben Day19/365 Garmin
Going for a run today was the last thing on my mind. A late night last night at the Headmasters Supper - bit of a beer fest with great food and company made for a slow start this morning. But no rest for the wicked - we'd promised the kids a dyas shopping at Hamley's in London - the worlds biggest toy shop! Kids awake nice and early (!) at the prospect of a 2hr train ride into London - Ollie was beside himself to discover the train was cruising into the Capital at 128mph! A full on day toy shopping, pizza in Soho, a rickshaw ride down Oxford Street and Regent Street into Picadilly and back to Bristol for 7pm on the dot.. knackered, but faithful to the challenge - it was with a slightly heavy heart I laced up once more! However, lace up I did, and here I am - looking forward to "un petit verre" and a curry!

Charles: Day 14/365 - Wonderful!

Day 14 and still going strong

I had a lot planned today, or should I say the wife had a lot planned for me to do today. I decided to go for an early run to the town centre and managed to talk her into meeting me and going for a stodgy fry up for a breakfast. I think I scored some brownie points there lol. The run was great today and the legs felt quite light considering I had already ran over 93km in the last 13 days which averages out at more than 4.5 miles per day.

Gonna stuff my face with food tonight so tomorrow's run is gonna be a killer but already planning my route

Drove to a friends house for a girls night in last night & the four of us drank rather a lot of wine. I unfortunately was the only one who had to get up and run. Charles: Day 13/365 - Its windy!

Day 13 and it was my first challenge run in high winds

I was looking forward to today's lunch time run at work. It was forecast to brighten up and the high winds to die down but, hey ho, the high winds remained and it was like I was dragging a lead weight behind me but I loved it. When you got into a bit of shelter you automatically felt yourself speeding up and feeling really strong but then the wind would hit you straight in the chest again.

Why is it when you start off your run into a headwind and think to yourself that the wind will be behind you on the way back and pushing you along, it never happens!? Its always a headwind!! :s

The details of my run can be found at Day 13/365 challenge

Nicky Day 13/365 The joy of public footpaths!

Don't you just love public footpaths? Decided to try a new one this evening. Over a couple of fields & into the mud when the signs came to an end! The choice was to either back track or plod on through the mud onto the main road. As the light was fading & the main road rather busy at 5pm I decided to backtrack! Will attempt this route again when the ground is a little drier & the light on my side ie a Sunday morning perhaps!

Ben Day18/365 Rogation Rabbit Run!

Another 5K in the dusk this evening. Got the Heads Supper at School tonight, so busy busy busy trying to cram everything in! Rabbits, owls and bat fest this evening, up along the Rogation Route between our parish churches one of which dates back to Norman times no less! Tony Day 28/365 - Evening loop through Pollok after one of the hardest workouts I have ever done..

So I know that I have been banging on about this crossfit gym that I go to and that I love the training there. We were told that todays workout was going to be one the hardest ever and with Iain the coach not telling us what that workout was there was no way to prepare for it. I made the decision to do the run after the workout so that I may have some fitness in the legs for whatever was thrown our way.
Walking into the gym with the workout posted on the board - I laughed and said 'your f-ing kidding- can that even be done in an hour??"
it went like this:
KELSU
100 Thrusters (front squat to push press) with 60kg
every minute on the minute 5 burpees.

Tap aff and hands chalked up with the adreneline pumping we set about the workout.
By 20min in my burpees looked ridiculous and i was only managing 2 thruster in every minute. Some minutes I didnt do any and took a rest! 30min in I thought I was going to faint but my ultramarathon mental toughness kicked in and we got to the end: 37:32 - solid.

With my legs like jelly I knew I couldn't do a long run- a simple 6km but with a headwind it felt like hell.
Finding the time is one thing - but fitting it in with other training is another!
Keep on thrusting!!

Brad's birthday today. We went out for dinner. It was really hard to get started on my run tonight. 29oF with wind chill to 22oF was not very inviting. However the night was clear and nice once I had warmed up a bit. Was a good run for starting to work out my layers for running in the cold. Day 12 already

It's been a long day at work and mentally tiring. I felt rubbish when I started out but I loved every minute of it once I got into my stride. When I finished I was hardly out of breath and could've ran for another good few km but since the wife (and my lift home) was waiting anxiously on my arrival, I edged of the side of caution and an ear bashing to just do the expected 7K tonight. Bring on tomorrow :))

Ben Day17/365 - gonna need a bigger boat!

Ben Day17/365 - Garmin
To quote Richard Dreyfuss! - frantically dashing about this evening, getting back from the office in Basingstoke  - a 2 hr commute ;-( A check to make sure if wife is collecting Oliver from golf at school collecting Neela from nursery then taking Oliver to Beavers.. allowed me 25 minutes to go for a run in the pitch black before I had to collect Oliver from Beavers, teeth, jarmies, read him stories and then dash out to buy wine before having a friend of Anusha's over for dinner tonight - that's all on top of leaving the house at 5:30 am this morning to drive over to Sandhurst to pick up a duet piano stool I won on EBay (16 quid versus 200 new!) before heading to office!
The reason for the bigger boat is that I realised my Petzl Tikka headtorch isn't up to the task anymore - stayed on the cycle path near the house and kept a sub 8 min/mile pace which I was happy about. Petzl woefully inadequate. Think I need this beast instead that some orienteer friends were using on Druids!
(how much?!)
Granddaddy of all Headtorches!

Realised that my gait has altered slightly too - I'm sure it's now more efficient (through necessity!) but I'm hitting much more mid-foot rather than heel these days - almost keeping the knee fixed, the foot flat and the calf loaded on impact.. very interesting, but am sure it's much more efficient than heel striking. Now, if I start flexing my pelvis when I run, I think I'll have turned into the gazelle I aspire to be!

Tonight was the first time I really realised that this challenge for me at least may not be about the mechanics of running every day - it's about building the time for it, in an already busy schedule... if I'm going to be doing more running in the dark and I don't want to be restricted to flat cycle path type running then I may have to get my wallet out!

In other news - I think I've found a supplier for our t-shirts that will sell them to us for <£20 each (before screen printing costs) which is great!

Nicky Day 12/365

Long day at work so wasn't looking forward to this evenings run. Once out there I actually really enjoyed it. Clear evening with lots of stars, quiet country lanes albeit pitch black (& I cannot find my head torch!)
Looking forward to the pub shortly!! Its good to be alive! :-)

Day 7/365 Challenge - Smokey Ridge

Went for another night run after my son (Buzz)'s band concert. It was his first one; he plays the trumpet. He was so excited and they were really pretty good seeing as they have only been playing for the past three months. Day 10 - From Kennoway to Buckhaven in Fife
Day 11 - A trip around Ravenscraig Park in Kirkcaldy, Fife

On day 10 I had to drop my car in at the garage to get a service and I was also working from home so I decided to have an evening run from my step-dads house to my dads house to go and say hiya to them because it'd been a few weeks since I last saw them. The run was quite good but I felt quite heavy legged and it was very cold at about 8.00 at night and the muscles were very tight. The chest was also sore with breathing in the freezing cold air.

My dad's response when I told him that I was doing the run 365 challenge was "Your doing f*****g what!? Your mad!!" but at least I know he meant it in a good way :-)

On day 11 I was working from home again because my car wasn't ready at the garage. I decided to go for a slow paced rest run in the park to stretch the legs and go over an old haunt that I used to walk every day for years and years when I had my Great Dane dogs. My run was interrupted because I came across an elderly couple who were out walking their 2 great danes so I ended up blethering to them for ages. When the run was over, I decided to treat myself to a hot cup of tea and a link sausage roll from the burger van. It was the best cup of tea and roll I've ever had. Fantastic run through trees and passing alongside a harbour. Fantastic day all round :-)

Tony Day 26/365 - Glasgow City figure of 8 loop before crossfit

So again with time against me and needing to stay close to the city centre i decided to get inventive with the running. Heading from commerce street I ran into town and performed what in my opinion was more like agility training when trying to dodge the cities workforce going home! heading along Suchiehall st with christmas shoppers to negotiate was exhausting because I was forced to run faster and make a lot of lateral movements which is alien to the 365 runner!
Heading back along Argyle street from the Merchant city I followed the clyde along and crossed at the Squinty bridge and back along to the start before doing the workout of the day at Crossfit.

Nicky Day 9/365 Long Sutton circuit

Busy old day at work & got a stack of computer stuff plus cooking, ironing & the usual household chores to fit in, so my planned 4m ended up as just under 2.5m. Still, it got me out into the fresh air & I enjoyed it! Happy days!!

Very gingerly slipped on a new pair of Inov8 Roclite 320's over lunch and went back to Leigh Woods for some flat woodland running. Stayed out of the clag and mud as best I could. Steady pace. Took about 10 mins before started loosening up a bit. Medial surface on both achilles a bit tight. Felt fine aerobically, even managed a bit of a sweat. Quickly followed by a protein shake and a long hot shower. Very very tired. Didn't sleep much last night for some reason; woke at 2am and 5am desperate for fluids! Coming around a bit after a cup of tea. Two weeks in to my Run365Challenge - yay!

Official run365challenge technical t-shirts!!!

Hey Guys!
We are now at the stage where we want to get you all showing off that you are taking part in this fantastic challenge. With this in mind we wanted a robust technical t-shirt that would be warm in the winter and cool in the summer. BB has recommended the Rab aeon technical t-shirt so it is this that we will go with.
In order that we get your size just right check out the sizing chart below and get your order into me by emailing on tonycurtis@tcfitness.co.uk. We will be looking to have the logo on both the front and back of the t-shirt so you can really show off to those that you run with or the ones you pass by!
Get your order in now!!

Ben Day11-13/365 Druids Ultra - Garmin updates

Ben Druids Day 1 Garmin - 29 miles
Ben Druids Day 2 Gamin - 26 miles
Ben Druids Day 3 Garmin - 28 miles

Hi everyone - finally back home safe and sound after a somewhat gruelling few days running along the Ridgeway - a 5000 year old pagan walkway in the Southern middle bit of England. Stunning route, scenery, rolling hills (some rather large). Thanks to Tony for updating the blog a little on the back of some tired and garbeld texting from me. Day 2 was a toughie as expected. Very pleased with a sub-5h marathon time on Day 1 though, given the terrain and pack I was running with. Day 2 sucked it out of me and was just glad to grind it out and get it over with. Day 3 (today) went quite well, though for the first time ever when I crossed the line I was seriously on the edge of vomiting - nice! (when I was vomiting in the Sahara I was no where near the finish line so that doesn't count!). My target for today was to hit 20 miles in under 4 hours and I passed the mark at 3:57 which mentally was a huge boost. I bonked a bit earlier today - mile 16! Will upload some photo's from the 3 day lactic acid fest in the coming days to give a flavour of what it's all about. best BB

PS - tomorrow's run will not be as long.
Some pics from the event - updated 14th Nov'11

More meat on a butchers pencil! start Day 2 - quick stretch!

Random Doggy goggles  - I think to stop her getting stung by nettles - (Marg - you're a vet, any ideas?)
(she was quite a fun dog!)
Check point - possibly on Day 1 - don't recall - getting some scran down my neck!

I'm smiling in this one - coming into CP2 on Day 3 - must have been a downhill bit!

Day 4/365 Challenge - Carmel block

Very windy today but not cold (65oF). Brad came on the run. He is still not sure if he wants to run every day. My lesson for today was to make sure that my phone is more than 30% charged for a 30 minute run. It gave out on me about 3 minutes from the end.

Tony Day 24/365 - Performed intervals during crossfit WOD then finished off 6km

Hey Guys!
Thats me nearing my first month! Having to get inventive with my runs now and try to include them into my weights workouts and other training.
Woke up this Sunday morning and checked the WOD at crossfit Glasgow to see if it was any good.
It involved the following:
5 rounds for time of
800m run
30 KB swings 24kg
30 Pull Ups.
Using the running intervals I thought i could complete the workout and only have to do another 2km or so to finish off todays run.
So breathing out my arse I completed the WOD in 34:41 and then managed to muster up the leg strength to finish off the run along the cold and autumnal clyde!!
Great way of including the run in my other training and keeps it interesting!!
Keep on running!
