Pete Day 92 - Sunday lone club run !! by Pljrun

Club run this morning no one around though, all the usual suspects off doing races somewhere or other. Decided to do a thirteen miler around the levels, keeping to the road though. Weather overcast but dry, perfect for running. Good run and back for breakfast.

Day 88- Wet lunchtime run by Pljrun and club run

Raining very hard, Tony decided too much for him so went round my new route of 3.3 miles the opposite way round. After turning under the railway bridge found the road flooded, not too deep, so carried on. Must admit I prefer it this way round short sharp hills up and longer down slopes.

This evening went for a run with the youngsters and a few not so young to do some sprinting and hill work, did 3.9 miles of hard work, everyone seemed to enjoy !!

Nicky: Day 44 Run with club

Untitled by knickerscat at Garmin Connect - Details

Was dreading this evenings run due to my heavy legs & achey old bones. Ran pretty slowly but steadily & really enjoyed it. Had to walk up bits of the hills but did try to run them. Did 5.75m in total which is my longest run since TBU. Maybe I will do that half mara in 12 days time after all.

Charles: Day 326/365 - Attacked by a dog

Out to just do the minimum 5k today and got attacked by a dog! It wasn't a vicious attack but a dog that just wanted to chase after me and jump up all the time. That I can cope with because I love dogs but its the irresponsible owners that should be put down! All she did was quietly shout "heel, heel". I even stopped running and walked alongside the woman so she could put it on a lead but the dog was out of control and the owner had obviously no control over the animal. I managed to make my escape when the dog ran down a walk way to the beach. Luckily she had it on a lead for my return leg.

I think the neighbours are soon going to offer me either a zimmer frame or wheelchair! The way I must look cos I certainly am feeling like a creeky old lady at the moment. Even the 2m is a real effort & struggle!!! My times are over 10min miles for even these short runs. Just shows, after big effort you need recovery time. Thats what makes this a massive challenge. 2m a day is not much but it certainly feels a lot currently.

Jack: New PB update!

Hey guys! I am due to get my internet sorted next week and so will update my blog posts with Garmin links! It has been a while since I updated my blog however I have still been out running everyday and I believe I have reached approximately 90days now. I will have a proper count later on today so that I can be sure of when I hit the big 100! I just thought I would post a quick update because I achieved a big personal milestone on Saturday at Parkrun Riddlesdown. I managed to score not only a new personal best for the 5k but it was also my first ever sub 17min. I recorded a time of 16mins 59secs which put me in second place. Still striving for my first Parkrun victory but it is nice to see the progress. Interestingly the course was one which I have only ever run once before. I was part of the contingent of nutters that took part in the run on Christmas Eve 2011...my time was 19mins 20secs. It speaks volumes for the benefits of the challenge that just nine months later, having spent the majority of that time running daily, I have taken almost two and a half minutes off my time. It is also somewhat frustrating that, even with a two and a half minute improvement in my time, I finished in exactly the same position in the field. Second. One day I will secure a first place but until then I will continue to pound out the early morning 5k loops and hopefully continue to see the improvement that has been so noticeable in my fitness.

Definatly going to take it easy as I have been roped into the Parrett Trail relay in a couple of weeks time  - Pete, think doing leg 1 so can we sort of do some car share lifting what ever for that? Alf away that weekend so he cannot ferry us.

Well not a lot to report. Since I got back home from TBU on Saturday I have very much been sticking to the minimum 2miles. Legs tired & heavy. Twitch all night keeping me awake too! Think the bed to warm & comfy too after a week of hard cold ground & tiny wet tent! I know which I would prefer though!  Days 33, 34, 35 are all more of a walk than run due to sore feet & very tired legs. This evening however, I actually did manage to job properly for my 2m. It was a bit of a struggle & I felt totally exhaused when I got home. I suppose I did push the old bones last week just a bit.

Go Beyond Trans Britain 2012 - Highlights

Nicky: Day 31 TBU day 6 YAY!

Nicky: Day 32 TBU Day 6 by knickerscat at Garmin Connect - Details

Final day and a mere 17+ miles.  Due to the cities & motorways, we were bussed to just outside Wrexham where we ran the final few miles in Wales to Ruthin Castle  and the finish line.
Jannine and I trotted along happily through woods, along roads, and as usual missed the footpath. Picked up Andy who had gone wrong in the same place as us! More hills, more heather & gorse to fight through & some uninspiring bleak moors to cross before reaching Offers Dyke & a nice long run through the woods down to the one and only CP of the day. The nice surprise was that they had laid on wine!!!!! Happy days. Between the 3 of us, we polished off a whole bottle - well why not. The serious racing snakes didnt partake so it would have been rude to see it go to waste!
Feeling a little tipsy, we entered into a sheep shit throwing competition so pass some time. Fatigue then once again set in so Andy left Jannine & I too it. She was really suffering with her sore knee & feet so it was us two dragging each other. More hills & still more hills before we reached the final small roads into Ruthin. Taff came out to run the final 2 miles in. We thought we were speeding along but apparetnly our tracker showed us doing an average speed of about 3m an hour! Oh well who cares. We managed to run up the final hill to the finish at the Castle where sparkling wine welcomed us just like it welcomes F1 racing drivers. Good spray of this, hot bath & later to our celebratory dinner & prize giving.

I was 3rd women and only 3mins behind Jannine in second place! Yes, I know, there were only 3 girls in it but thats because its a bloody tough old race and there are not that many nutcase ladies in the world! I was pretty pleased though that although Kirsty broke the previous ladies record for this race, I was only 11 mins behind the previous record and for the first time since the race started 4 or 5 years ago, no ladies were ever running in the dark on the long days. Happy days & a challenge for you guys out there for next year. Check out Gobeyond Ultra!!!!!

Nicky: Day 31 cont... TBU Day 5 cont... by knickerscat at Garmin Connect - Details

Jannine & I were getting a little bit fed up with Kirsty dragging us along at a pace that didnt suit us, so we strongly advised her to go ahead & take first place. We were happy to make it to the finish in one piece as opposed to wrecks! Today a shorter but tough day.  A mere 25miles ish!!  But, up & over Pen Y Ghent & a couple of other horrors!
Interesting start to the day! Out along the river, then down a track for a bit. We were so busy jogging along happily & chatting that we didnt check the map properly & ended up a mile or so down a long hill. Asked a local farmer where we were & he kindly gave us a lift back to where we went wrong, on his quad bike! Yes, probably cheating but when you are totally knackered - who cares! We certainly didnt!!!  Back en route, we had a long slog up some or other blowey cold hill followed by a lovely long  meandering path great for jogging along. Stopped & chatted to some walkers who were intrigued as to why 2 wind bedraggled women wearing large back packs were running!!! Also photo stop at the viaduct which looked straight out of a Harry Potter film to CP1. Greham who was manning the CP commented on how much happier the pair of us looked without Kirsty!!!
From the CP a little more road then muddy farm tracks & back up into the hills. Again, due to our chatting we missed the correct footpath & had to fight our way through bracken and heather onto the correct path. Wind had now picked up big time & the cloud closed in! We found some shelter behind a dry stone wall & put on more appropriate clothing before the long ridge run & then down into the village of Horton to CP2. CP was outside a cafe at the bottom of Pen Y Ghent. It would have been rude not to stop for a swift hot chocolate & sausage roll! :D !! Due to the now dreadful weather, we put on all our mountain survival kit. We were secretly hoping the race director would redirect us around the mountain but NO! Up we had to go! A brisk walk with the poles 3.5 miles up to the top. Freezing cold, & very gusty wind - almost hard to stand upright. At the top, good old Taff met us to escourt us down the otherside! Apparently the views are supposed to be stunnind!!!

After a clamber over big boulders (bit scarey with the wind), it was a lovely long trot down). Well it would have been if we hadnt missed the path again! Up another hill onto the correct path which was a total quagmire over the fields & another mile or so up to the final campsite! Tough but great day!

Whew! Well another very long day on the TBU. I think it was just over 35miles! Set off again in the drizzle but at least we could see some of the scenary in the beautiful Lake District. Started through some woods & steep paths then wound our way over muddy fields, tracks, small roads from Ambleside, Windermere, Kendal (some sunshine) then on into Yorkshire moors national park. Some tough going underfoot & general fatigue an issue. I came in after around 11 hrs, 2 mins behind my running pal.  Cold wet & muddy. Had a quick shower & luckily one of the guys who had to retire after day one due to an ankle injury took us girls under his wing & did our washing for us! It would have been a very late night otherwise.

Nicky: Day 29 TBU Day 3 by knickerscat at Garmin Connect - Details

Today was the biggie:  a mere 18 or so miles but over the Cumbrian Mts. The day I have been most worried about. I am not a hill person. I dont like hill running let alone over a load of the highest hills in the Lake District with back pack etc after already doing 50+ miles.

Well, I actually loved it & this day turned out to be my favourite day of the challenge. Yes, it was challenging, cold, wet, sleet, windy. When we did have breaks in the cloud the scenary was totally stunning! The climb to the top of Helvellyn was tough & we heard later that the temperature was only 5 degrees with 50m per hour wind to add to the chill factor. This day we all had to carry extra warm clothing, which I was very pleased for! Base layer, fleece, wind-proof jacket, running leggings plus windprrof troos, hat, gloves & half way up we all changed into dry socks (which after being in soggy running shoes for 5mins were wet again anyway)!!!
After Helvellyn we had a steep down then a vicious climb up loose scree to the top of Fairfield! OUCH! Had to be the worst part of the whole week long challenge. Pretty scary for those of us who dont like heights to add to it all!

From top of Fairfield we had a phone call from base worried about us girlies as we were taking so long & they wondered where on earth we were. The leader was in after 4 hrs!!! From Fairfield it took us a further 2 hrs to make it in to near Ambleside down a challenging stepped path. Whew! Sweet relief to make it in. Lovely campsite in a lovely setting. Shame about the rain (again!)

Charles: Day 316/365 - Holiday time :))

Felt a little battered and bruised this morning after yesterdays long day out. Today is a shorter day, but on heavy legs with a major hill to contend with early on, it was set to be a tough day!   It was!!!
Cold drizzly & the hill facing us was HUGE! Very boggy with invisible foot paths! Clambering over heather & through gorse, leaping over massive puddles and picking our way through mountain streams - yes, I managed to slip into one up to my thighs too, to add to the cold!
Check point 1 was a welcome sight where I added more padding & plaster to my sore heels.
Myself Jannine & Kirsty then plodded along some country lanes & across plenty plenty of very thick boggy fields before reaching CP2. Quick stop before it was pretty much small roads all the way to the end. I was totally shattered! Another 19+ miles done.

Sunday morning, a couple of people with half marathons coming up so a 11/12 miler today. Nice run with a hill to start and one to finish. The rest of the run is around the levels so very nice steady run to get the distance not time. Good run, good company and good weather makes you realise why you do this.

Nicky: Day 27 TBU Day 1 by knickerscat at Garmin Connect - Details
Nicky: Day 27 cont.... TBU Day 1 cont by knickerscat at Garmin Connect - Details

So the fun begins. Camped near Gretna Green last night. Was introduced to my little one man pop up tent which was to be home for the next 6 days. Group seem pretty friendly bunch but also as usual, pretty elite. Only 3 of us girls & I know that Jannine & Kirsty are far better runners than me. This is going to be tough. My back pack weighed in at around 6.5kg excluding water. Not much compared to the MdS, but seeing as its the first time I have actually put the darn thing on in 18 months. Hmmm!!!
Set off at 09:00 & all the lads set off at quite a pace. Last years winner was back to regain his title but to also break his own & the current course record.

Uninspiring first few miles through Gretna then over some pretty boggy tracks, river paths etc to Carlisle, then a very very muddy, sticky & boggy run to the end point of the day (where ever that was!) I think todays total mileage was 35.7 miles.
Shattered by the end of the day. Feet a little soggy. One thing with this race is that everything you need for the week is on your back - no clean shoes to put on after shower! Plastic bags on feet & then straight back into cold wet shoes......nice!!!!

A 22.4 mile run home from work, second Friday on the run that I have done over 21, Chester marathon coming up and feeling reasonably good. Hope this carries on, starting to feel the chill in the air now, it got pretty cold around 17:30 glad I had a spare long sleeve shirt with me !! Still enjoyed the run and it was nice to get back into the old routine.

Charles: Day 308 to 311/365 - Does CxWorx work?

All the runs were just variations of the usual daily grind. Still feeling sore but getting stronger with every run, I think.

Went to a gym class called CxWorx that is supposed to be a 30 minute intense workout of the core muscles. All the class seemed to do was give me a good stretch because the weights were too light and the elastic band thingy wasn't strong enough to give me enough resistance. I enjoyed the class and think it will help strengthen the core muscles if I can get a heavier weight and stronger band (or even 2 bands together). I'll go again after I get beck from my holibags :)

day 83/365 My First Marathon by robgundry at Garmin Connect - Details
This was the first year for this race so when i googled the toughest uk marathon it didnt show up !!
But as i soon discovered from seasoned marathon/trial runners it was the toughest.
The hills were extreme and brutal the bog stank !!
The feed stations and marshalls were brilliant and the best thing about the event was the support from other runners as we passed each other with high 5's.
I must shout out mike who ran with me from mile 3 and kept me going to the end we had to walk the hills as there was no way we could run them.
Now i'm home id like to thank all the challenge guys and girls for your support as the thing i'm proud to say is 'I'M A MARATHON RUNNER' got the sore nipples, black toe nails to prove it

Day 70 - A doggy 3 miler by Pljrun

Took the two springers on a short run to get them used to running, always took the border when he was young er. They are slowly getting used to it, no bramble stops today but did let them cool off in the river after 1.5 miles, it was a bit hot. Then off again ended up just over three miles and shall try a bit further next time.

Day 69 - A 21 miler around the levels by Pljrun

Went for a new 20 miler around the levels today, went a bit wrong so it became over twenty one miles. Having said that it was a very interesting run in the company of Paul from the club, he is doing Berlin in a couple of weeks and needed a long run. Weather was ideal cool at the start and did not get too hot all morning, ended up missing a right turn (even though we had a map of the route) asked someone where we were and found ourselves in Shepton Beauchamp. Quick look at map and then headed off to Barrington and way home. Nice route for a run, will do again.

Warm pleasant evening for it though.

Stunning stunning morning. I spotted Peter our with Paul (from our running club) doing his 20miles. I was in the car Pete - waved furiously but you were in deep running concentration. You were on the main road between Long Load & Martock!!  I did 2.5m :D!! Chilly start but boy it was warm after a half mile or so!
I have an early start tomorrow morning as have to be in Taunton to catch my train to Gretna Green at 07:50. Dont really want to do my 2m as soon as I get up there so may just head out at midnight. You will have to wait for my next posts (in a weeks time) as I will be trotting my way down from Gretna to N.Wales on the Trans Britain Ultra. Hmmmmm!

Day 22: Amsterdam circuit by knickerscat at Garmin Connect - Details

In Amsterdam for 3 days with work. Lovely & sunny & warm too. Dont get too much free time, but popped out with my colleague Ian for 2m minimum. Dangerous business as it seems pedestrians have no rights in this city. Nearly got mowed down by bicycles & trams more than once. All good fun though. Really enjoyed the trot albeit a slow one.

Day 23: Amsterdam zig zags by knickerscat at Garmin Connect - Details

This was more of a walk than run due to work & time. Had to do a team building exercise around the city which finished up with dinner. Again, trams & bikes are a major hazard. Still enjoyed the fresh air & sights (some quite interesting!!)

Day 24: Amsterdam trot & flat battery! :( by knickerscat at Garmin Connect - Details

This is a frustrating one. Early start with meetings. Finished at 3:30 & bus back to airport at 5:30 with no opportunity to shower. Couldnt really go for a run so my colleague & I decided to go for a swiftish stroll. My blinking battery failed on me after 1.5m although I assure you we did around 2.5m. Again, very slow due to the dodging of wheels! Nice & warm again though. Really lovely city, but a shame our hotel no where near anywhere green!!!

Thought you might like to see 2 piccies from Amsterdam! The sensible one out running & a wild night out with colleagues in the red light area! Prostitute behind first door hiding behind her curtain!

Charles: Day 306/365 - Lunch time running

A lunch time run at work and a very slow one at that. I think today has proven to me that no matter how painful running is, it's a mind over matter as to how you deal with it and grind it out. The pain wasn't as bad today as it was in the last 2 days. The saving grace is that today was a lot cooler than it has been and a strong wind helped to keep me from over heating. Roll on winter :)

Day 80/365 A hospital check-up!! by robgundry at Garmin Connect - Details

This morning I had my annual Defib Check-up and I knew after six years and running for a year that they would be asking questions. My check-up would normally take ten mines but today it took an hour! Basically my battery is getting low and this means in a few months I will need a small op to replace and upgrade the device which might entail me having the ICD leads to be replacing which is a bit worse as it takes longer to recover as the leads have to embed themselves in to the heart. Now I'm hoping that I won’t need the leads replaced as this could mean an early end to my challenge :( but all I can do is to wait and see what happens. My chest will be bruised after the op so the mile will be the only option for me. I just hope this is all done after October the 28th as that’s my next bigger race the Salisbury Half Marathon.
Hey for once I've had something interesting to put up.
Peace out

I believe I must be at around day 70 now (although it should be around 130!!) The reason I have disappeared off the radar is that I moved flat and have had no internet access since the move! I will try to get my blog updated asap but it may just be a long list of links! Hope everyone is going strong and I will keep you posted on my progress. I did score a new 5k pb yesterday at parkrun of 17.08 so all this running is paying off!
