Day 31/365 End of January

Hi all, this is my first post and I am very glad to join the community. I started on the 1st of January and have delayed signing up to the blog for 2 reasons. Firstly I wanted to make sure that practically I could see through the task in hand and secondly I had an issue with a scuba diving trip in November. The dive trip would have meant I would have needed to run around the deck of the dive boat at least 50 times a day.

Well after completing a month I believe I am up for the challenge and I have postponed our dive trip to 2014.

I also have one very big incentive to get the challenge complete on New Years eve.  My Daughter will be 18 on New Years day 2014 and we have a planned trip to New York to celebrate and take in Time Square. Therefore my last run will be around Central Park, what a great incentive.

I have set a minimum distance of 3K per day but I am aiming to do around 3 miles/5K, with the support of my friends and family.

So with 31 days done and 138 miles complete I am off to a great start. All advice and help will be gratefully received.

Big Kev

Really pleased to get to triple figures! Seemed to go fairly quickly looking back and injury free, feeling fitter so good all round. Just 2 quick min distance runs due to being away overnight with work. Early morning yesterday before heading off to Bath and a later one tonight after getting home.

Up in London for an all day work meeting on Wednesday so got up at 6am to do my miles in Regents Park as I wont be home in time for running club tonight. Was a real struggle to get up, especially as myself & my colleagues didnt go to bed til gone midnight! Pitch dark but I ran with one of my customers so felt pretty safe. Found the run pretty tough due to the excesses of wine last night - ho hum! A run helps clear the head.

Unofficial Day 294 (Karl)

Hi,

I did say I'd pop in and keep you posted on where I am at with the challenge even though I am not officially recording any more. Now on Day 294. Did a very wet 10 miler today.
Yesterday I did 12 km including the club run. Had a fairly low volume January with 230km recorded. Expect there to be notably bigger numbers in February.

Well what a turn around. Last night was running club and as I ran 11 miles back from Glastonbury I went out and did 3 miles with some speed work with Brett. I felt awesome on the run and a whole different person.
Earlier at club I was awarded Most Improved Male Runner 2012 and 7th in the club championship. Needless to say I'm over the moon.
Also congratulations to Kate who won Most Improved Female 2012

Today's run was supposed to be a simple a-b run from Glastonbury to home. I had rode the route 4 times and thought I'd be able to run it. The first 4-5 miles were ok but hilly but when I got 3 miles from home my legs suddenly felt heavy and I could manage a 100 meters so I sucked it up and powered through very slowly with having to walk now and then. Feeling bad with myself as I didn't take a drink or fuel well. Lesson learnt. Fuel my self well and it won't be be long till I tackle it again and smash it !

Charles: Day 28 & 29/365 - Wish it would stop raining

Day 28 was with the running club and it was freezing cold, very windy and chucking it down with rain. This is the first time in over a year and a half that I almost said "sod it, I'm not playing anymore" but I forced myself out the door and actually enjoyed the slow run with the intermediate group. It was far too slow a pace but I loved the easy run, I wasn't even out of breath when we finished and hardly sweating. I better start taking the advanced group again before the intermediate lot lynch me :)

Day 29 was a bog standard lunchtime run in the freezing cold rain and high winds. Hated every stride but strangely enjoyed it

First real attempt at doing some proper training for around 3 weeks since I hurt my coccyx ice - skating.  I think the week skiing & doing minimum run/walking altho hard skiing really helped it recover. Hmm! An hour of speed work & I can feel the pain again.  Think I am going to have to take it a little slowly til its properly better. Struggled with the 4m interval training this evening too.

Arrived in France at 06:30 via the train (nightmare journey). Managed to get a few hours skiing in. Sussed out the village for running but virtually a no go! Roads have no pavements - ski buses rushing around the narrow streets which are covered in ice. Had to resort to a 2mile stroll with chunky boots on to keep upright!  Am going to have to amalgamate strolls with skiing somehow to ensure I get my daily 2m in! Above is my 2miler with Alf sussing the area/town for suitable runs! Hmm.

Sunday club run and six of us went on a long run, weather sunny but windy. Fortunately got warm out on park lane and stopped to remove my wind jacket, if I had not I would have been going out after I got home. Reason being I had forgot to start my watch !!! we were 3.6 miles in when I did. Never mind the rest of the run more than covere my 3 mile minimum. Also got wet feet again like yesterday running through ankle deep water in places, mind you it did rain a bit last night. It was a great run with good company.

Pete Day 210 - Thirteen miler with Brett and Colin from the club by Pljrun

Wanted to do a long run today so at last nights AGM Colin said he was doing a thirteen mile run and said I could join him and Brett. Good reasonably flat run to Kingsbury and back from Curry, little bit of a flood at one point and on the way back the river had risen by a good foot and was pouring out onto the road the Drayton side of Muchelney, so will keep away from there tomorrow. Enjoyed the run but my ankle was sore again today, have been living with it for a while and thought it had gone but todays faster run may have been too hard, see how it is after tomorrow, off on a planned fourteen mile plus more leisurely club run.

Jack: Day 220/365...Down with a bump.

This morning I was up bright and early for a trip to Parkrun when it was announced on Twitter that  the event was cancelled. I decided to head out for my run early anyway and to try a longer, slow run. As I hit the pavement I realised that this run was going to be much slower than I had originally intended. The recent cold weather had left a thin layer of ice over most of the pavement and, at this time of the morning, they had not had much of a chance to thaw out. I made the decision to head towards Queen's Park as I figured the grass would be a more steady surface on which to run and therefore allow me to pick up some pace. It was as I was passing a family of five (and dog) that I stepped off of the path and onto the grass. I hit the deck spectacularly as my feet slid away from me. As I flapped helplessly to attempt a recovery I just made things worse and I ended up falling a second time before I had even recovered from the first fall! Sliding down a bank on my bum left me feeling incredibly embarrassed (and very muddy!) but fortunately I wasn't hurt in any way on the fall. I made for the park exit and decided to take me chances back on the pavements. The rest of the run was pretty slow as I was very wary of losing my footing. I covered 14km today and hope to start building up the mileage over the next few weeks.

Day Off

My legs are feeling a bit too stiff and they really do not want to move this morning. I am surprised by this condition due to the relative lack of mileage - still doing much less per week than normal. Too many glasses of red last night - wouldn't it be great if that were true? Being less than a year from the big 50 is more likely the cause - oh ya, and not being able to take a day off isn't helping either. So I declare today, and every Friday to be my day off, my day of rest. The one day of the week where I don't have to go outside in weather like this morning, and I can sleep in - another 45 minutes!  This day of rest will come each Friday and start early in the morning in my mind........right after my run.

Just a couple of boring runs to report! 216 was done on Tuesday morning before school. It was a pretty standard 5k along the usual route. Nothing too exciting.

On Wednesday I decided to do the run after school as I finish early (in theory!). I was home from work by 7pm and then hit the road for an (almost) 8km run. I decided to push this one and so went for it pretty hard. I managed to maintain a split of 3:39min/km which I was quite pleased with.

It looks like I may be entering The Might Deerstalker in March with a team from school. I have heard exciting things about the race and look forward to making a weekend of it!

Runs are definitely feeling better and I am considering upping my minimum run to 2 miles.

Jack: Day 213-215/365...150 To go!

This weekend was tough. My legs were absolutely ruined on saturday morning after friday's football! I was hoping to do parkrun but there was no chance of running a quick 5k so I decided on an extra half hour in bed and a gentle jog later in the day. I decided to make the run a bit of a longer one to make up for a lack of pace and so covered just over 8km. Sunday I was still aching in my quads and hamstrings and so just about managed my minimum 5km. This was disappointing as I had hoped to get a decent long run in this weekend. Nevermind! I still have time on my side before the marathon in May and I thought it would be best to play it safe this weekend.

On Monday I decided to head out after school and run along to Giffnock. As I was running along it started to snow but it was quite a pleasant evening and so  I decided to keep going and see where I ended up. The loop ended up being just under 8km and was quite pleasant so I a sure I will follow this route again.

All that leaves me with 150 days to go! This is a very exciting milestone. I know it is still almost 5months worth of running but 150 days sounds much more manageable than 365. The main focus is now going to be hitting the final 100 and then cracking on with my fundraising!

Pete Day 201 to 204 - Catch up time by Pljrun at Garmin Connect

Pete Day 204 - A very icy club 13 miler by Pljrun at Garmin Connect - Details
Sunday club run and a plus 13 miler planned, no more snow but lots of ice around and it was quite dodgy in places. At times it could have been ice skating and going down Turn Hill was a bit hairy as Shaun who ran with me nearly found out to his cost. Kept trying to snow but didn't so it was a nice run although quite cold in places.

Too snowy to run at work so went for a slow 4 miler at home. Not too bad as it had started to clear and running in the road made it easier. But stepping on the pavement was dodgy.

But I did it .

Karen Day 88 and 89

Day 88 - http://connect.garmin.com/activity/264182779
Just an easy run round the block due to ice and had to mix a bit of walking in there too in places...

Day 89 - http://connect.garmin.com/activity/264182757
Had to measure the run route for the triathlon my husband is organising in May for Total Buzz Events so a good opportunity to get out and run somewhere different. A good out and back route which will be fast on race day - not quite so fast today! Got called some inaudible expletive by some w***er in a car that obviously didn't like sharing the road with a runner. You'd have thought with the icy pavements that drivers would be a bit more understanding - pity!

Charles: Day 20/365 - Mad!

My usual very hilly minimum 3k but what makes it even harder is the amount of snow that I've got to plough my way through at the moment because staying 650 feet above sea level does have its disadvantages. Doesn't help that I spend an hour scraping the snow off the driveway every day. Wouldn't change a thing though :)

Slippery Day 195-196 by Sallycinn

Creeping nearer to the 200 day mark which is quite exciting!

Very icy and slippery pavement around the neighbourhood today so slipped and slided until I found a little bit of non icy pavement to run a little.  Not ideal doing minimum at the weekend - don't like the snow when I can't follow my training plan. But met my pal for a coffee at the end so made do.
Slippery Day 195 by Sallycinn at Garmin Connect - Details

Ventured out this morning expecting to only do minimum again but decided to be more determined and ran on the road up to the Downs where I could run on grass.  Good idea and ended up do a five miler which I'm chuffed about.  Wanted to do a 9 miler but 5 will do under the circumstances.  And, running on snow feels the same as running on sand so had to work harder than usual.

Jack: Day 212/365...Staff Football Day!

After school today I had a football match against the senior pupils. After a couple of weeks of banter with the kids in my class I was definitely feeling the pressure! The game was a tough one and the final score of 5-5 was probably fair. Today I failed to make it out for my run before school and so I ended up doing it once I got back from the match. This was really tough. My knees felt pretty sore after the game (They took a few knocks and the astro-turf wasn't very forgiving on a couple of my challenges!). I also had to switch to an old pair of trainers after my boots literally fell apart mid-way through the first half and this led to some pretty bad blood blisters forming on my toes! Not ideal when you're running everyday. A nice bonus however was coming home and having a hot bath already waiting for me! Time for a nice relax on the sofa with a glass of wine.

Jack: Day 209-211/365...Early Mornings.

This week I made an effort to do my running in the mornings before school. This was pretty tough, especially with the ridiculously cold weather AND having to get the train, but it was amazing being able to work at school for a few hours each day and be productive without having to worry about getting home to run. I am going to try to do this more often. The runs were all straightforward 5kish runs along the main road. I was hoping to go back to the harriers for training this week but I realised that I don't have the funds to pay for my membership! I will have to delay it until the end of the month.

Day 83 - http://connect.garmin.com/activity/262847890
Felt better today but really tired so assuming some kind of bug, but plodded around the minimum again. Really starry night so had to stop and gaze up for a while...

Day 84 - http://connect.garmin.com/activity/262847880
Back to full health today and a later start at work so had some daylight hours to make up a bit of a deficit in mileage in the last few days. Really pleased with my average pace over 4 miles as its definitely improving...

Day 85 - http://connect.garmin.com/activity/262847869
Matt challenged me to average 9 min miles over 3 miles this evening so said I'd give it a go if he paced me... his garmin is a bit more sophisticated than mine, which only shows actual pace and not average pace until the end of the run..... Confident that I could manage it with a bit of encouragement after averaging 9:04 yesterday over 4 miles, we set off... I didn't want a progress report until the end of the 3 miles so I could see if I could push myself, and ended up averaging 8:29! when questioning Matt about what happened to the pacing, he simply suggested that I looked strong and he didn't want to slow me down. Grrrrr, not sure about trusting him ever again now but he showed me I can do it!! Really pleased with myself today! Big gold star!...

Pete Day 200 - Another milestone so two 3 mile runs to celebrate !! by Pljrun

Another milestone reached and even though the weather is getting colder I am still enjoying the challenge very much. I remember starting and wondering if I wuld be able to run even a week non stop, so used to having a five day running week, with a couple of run free days. But to be honest I feel that the challenge has actually helped with my running as well as the enjoyment I get from it. So here is to the next 100. To celebrate I did two 3 mile runs today (one for each hundred).

At a meeting in the big smoke all day & as worked in Basingstoke tomorrow, stayed overnight with a friend save driving all the way to Somerset & back again. Arrived at Wendys house at around 7pm and managed to persuade her to come out for a run with me. She is training for the Moonwalk but does not run. She actually did very well & we did 3m together. Freezing cold & frosty night around the streets, but actually really pleasant. Sorry to keep on going on about my rear end, but SHIT it hurts like hell! We walked up an incline & I suggested a power walk - hmmm! The long strides just pulled too much & it was much easier & less painful to just take very small jogging steps. Getting rather frustrated with this injury & am gradually kissing goodbye to my sub 4 Brighton Mara. :(

Lost

14/365 run -- LOST by Vardoggs at Garmin Connect - Details

Hunkered down for the winter and dealing with the cabin fever that inevitably sets in, I find myself watching the series Lost on Hulu. I had started it years ago and didn't care for it so much - so what is the attraction now? This morning after my run as I sit to upload my information into Garmin Connect I realize that I have something in common with the story line of the show. In the second season of lost there is a computer that must have a certain set of numbers input every 108 minutes or the island explodes - I have to upload or a least record a run every 24 hours or my goal "explodes." They are also sharing an experience with people on and island that they have never met on the other side as I am with all of you across the pond. I wish that the weather was similar...

The next morning 400 yards from his house he twists his ankle. Not a terrible sprain, but a sprain non-the-less. Interesting start. I told him that since he was only in his second day that he should let the ankle heal and start over when it is healed. He planned to run somehow this morning. We will see...

Sunday's run (207) was a nice gentle 10k around Pollok Park. I took my time over the run and just enjoyed the route. I was a bit gutted when my ipod stopped working after a few kilometres but never mind!

For Monday's effort I decided to get up early and head out before work. It was tough getting up in the morning but I managed to drag myself out of the door and down towards Giffnock to complete my 5k. It was a slog this morning and my legs were heavy having just crawled out of bed. Finishing work and not having to worry about getting home for a run was great though and I had a really productive evening.

Jack: Day 206/365...Parkrun

This morning I got up and made my way down for my first parkrun of the year. It was bloody freezing!! I took the jog there and back nice and easy which gave me an extra 4.5km to my daily total. Every little helps! The run itself was ok. I felt pretty strong and enjoyed the long downhill sections. The uphills were pretty tough and so this is definitely something for me to work on. My finish time (unofficial) was 17:10 which was a little disappointing as I was hoping for a PB. My fastest time at this course is 17:08 and so I suppose it could have been much worse! I will just have to keep plugging away and hopefully it will come soon.

For my run this evening I managed to get hold of a new battery for my heart rate monitor so there is an extra little bit of data for me to look over when I check my Garmin! Very exciting! The run itself was the usual Giffnock loop with a finish at the shop for a few bits for dinner! Lovely.

Cold dark damp run after work - still sluggish & still have sore sacrum! Skiing in a weeks time is going to be interesting!!! Anyway - just the basic 2m around my Upton Loop.

Kate - Day 11 - Getting a little bit of speed back.

IT'S FRIDAY!!!! I made it through the week!! My calf is feeling very vulnerable today, so I'm being very cautious, and will be spending a little while on the foam roller tonight! This being injured/in recovery is a little frustrating, I must say! I was very pleased with my mile though, which I managed in 7 minutes, so I would appear to be re-gaining some pace now!  Happy Friday everyone!

Feeling more like Arkansas this morning - muggy and warmer - almost 50 degrees at 5:30 am.. Today's run, just short of 3 miles is the longest run of the challenge so far and just short of the minimum distance that I would run prior to the challenge. During the run I could definitely feel the lack of a rest day but think that I will adapt to this - reading some of what the others are doing this is almost a certainty  I will check in Monday with my next 3 runs.

Nicky: Day 150 Knole Rd.....again! by Nicky.C at Garmin Connect - Details

Day 150 - big milestone for the second time! Determined I will not be seeing day 150 for a third time. Alf came out this evening too for a cold, wet & dark run along the boring old Knole Rd. Did 3m this evening & felt a little sluggish altho sacrum fine whilst running. Couldnt bend down to undo my laces though when I got home. Hey Ho!!

Nicky: Day 149 Club run

Nicky: Day 149 run with club by Nicky.C at Garmin Connect - Details

Sacrum still darn sore altho strangely still ok to run on slowly but painful to bend down! Decided against the Street 5k and stick with a slow club run. Really good turn out & around 17 in our slow group this evening. Ran with Kate & Jane & did a nice easy 5m trot around the lanes of Wearne & Low Ham. Amazing how the miles just go when you are in good company & chatting away nicely.

Jack: Day 204/365...Track Session

This evening I returned to Bellahouston Harriers for my second training session with the club. This evening the guys had a track session lined up and so we jogged down to the facility at half six. Tonight would be 8x400m intervals with 100m slow jogs in between sets. I felt good and it was nice to open up and do some speed work. The session flew by and I am looked forward to doing some more work on the track in future.

Kate - Day 10 I've reached double figures!!

Rain!!!! My overwhelming reaction to this fact was not one of disappointment that it was raining for my run today, but one of surprise that I have managed to go this many days without getting rained on!! Once again, sticking to the one mile, especially after five last night, but short though it was, I enjoyed it! My treat for making it to double figures in the challenge is this months issue of Running Fitness, which I am going to get my beak stuck into now! That with a nice cup of tea, some chocolate and a comfy sofa, I'm set for the evening!

There is so much water laying around and so much coming down it would have been a good run/swim day for triathlete training. More rain tomorrow and the cloths dryer is drying my stuff right now. Love this stuff...

Kate - day 9 - A cautious but enjoyable 5!! (thanks Nicky!!)

Back at the club tonight!!! Yippee!! I have missed my running friends, as my injury has kept me away from club runs for a long while!! It was very good to be back out with friends.  Nicky and I nursed our way around what had been intended to be a 4 mile route, which ended up being just shy of 5! So we made it up to the full 5 by running around the carpark a few times!!! Thankfully, my shin felt okay, and I really enjoyed the company on route too! I do love the cup of tea and biscuits at the hall afterwards too! Good to be back! I love my running club! :-)

When to start fundraising?

I am doing this challenge for a charity and was wondering if anyone else is doing the same? How far in to it do you think it is sensible to start fundraising?

Jack: Day 203/365

Today was a long day at work as I had parents' evening after school. By the time I got home it was fairly late and so my run was another straightforward route towards Giffnock and back. I took it pretty easy after yesterdays tough interval session and so the pace was pretty gentle. When I got home I was chuffed to find my sponsorship pack that The  Soldiers' Charity had sent me in the post. All kinds of pens, badges and wristbands along with a snazzy vest and t-shirt. Winner!

Had a lovely walk along the Jurassic Coast Path from Weymouth today - VERY muddy but lovely sunshine and dry at last! A long day so thought I'd only manage the minimum run but was cross with myself for settling with to too many minimum distance runs so just kept going and finished on a more respectable 4 miles. Felt pleased with my 'inner strength' !!!

Jack: Days 201-202/365

Monday was a simple out and back route totaling just under 6km. It was a pretty straightforward run with nothing too exciting to report.

Tuesday I received an e-mail from 'The Solider's Charity' with regards to my fundraising. I told them recently that I would be using this challenge to raise money for them and so they are sending me some fundraising gear. They have also invited me to Edinburgh Castle at the end of the challenge to meet them for some photographs and to hand over my donation. I have been asked if they mind using my experience of the challenge for the news sections of their Facebook page which is quite exciting.

For my run this evening I decided to experiment with my Garmin a little. I have not really made use of the 'training' functions that are programmed into the unit as I have simply been running for distance/time. Tonight I set myself an interval session of 5 hard minutes followed by 90secs jogging. I did three sets of this which took my total distance to 5.85km. I really pushed the fast sections and the first half of the run was a steady uphill climb which made things tough. I am sure it was worth it though and I will be making greater use of this function in future runs.

Officially out but in-officially still in

Hello folks and happy new year.
I may be a bit of a blast from the past but I have continued with the challenge and have just over 100 days to go.

Sadly my technical support has let me down one too many times now so I am not going to complete the challenge in terms of having the data to prove it. For myself though I am going continue the challenge and complete it mid April. As much as it would have been nice to have a record of all the routes that I have done and a data record of completing the challenge what is important to me is that I know that I have done the challenge and run a minimum of 3km a day for a year.

I am actually more likely to post on here with some updates and the occasional data file should me Garmin behave. As I have been used to my Garmin for over 4 years I haven't got used to suddenly recording my runs on my phone and now it is too late really.

Anyway hope everyone else's challenge is going well.

Karl

Rear again very sore today when bending down to pick something up. Not starting the challenge from day 1 again, so aimed for a slow trot. Alf came too as he has entered the Snowonia Marathon in October as part of his get fit for Patagonia campaign! Decided to do 3m - I felt ok providing I stuck with a slow pace. Alf unfortunatly felt heavy legged & heavy in the stomach to & started throwing up after 2m! Being the ever sympathetic ex-nurse, I carried on & left him to it! Sacrum feels just fine when running slowly - going to attempt pilates tonight but I think thats probably being a bit ambitious! :)

Nicky: Day 147 Speed training or not....!!

Nicky: Day 147 Trot around Langport by Nicky.C at Garmin Connect - Details

Seeing as I managed 11m yesterday with a sore backside, I couldnt see any reason why a 3m ish speed training session with the club would be any different. Hmmm!! Felt a little sore & battered all day, especially when having to tr & pick something off the floor or sitting down. Felt sort of OK on the short warm up run, but as soon as we started doing anything mildly quick - pain kicked in big time. Had to call it quits and just stick with a slow trot alongside the others whilst they sped up and down the roads of a local trading estate. Rather frustrating for me! At least I managed to get 4m in though. Dont think I will be doing the Street 5k race on Wednesday. :(

Kate - day 8 - early bird!

Today, I decided that the only sensible place for my run, was first thing in the morning, due a busy day, including an appointment with the chiropractor!! So at 6am, off I went, and it wasn't too bad!! I only did the minimum again, for both time, and injury prevention reasons, but I plan on getting back to the club tomorrow night for a longer run. The chiropractor reported that us runners go to chiropractors in the worst condition becasue of the relentless and repetitive nature of what we do! Great!! I'm in a bit of a pickle (extremely tight lower back muscles, whilst having a hypermobile spine, hips and shoulders, and an unexplainable pronounced, and painful bone below toe 3 in my left foot!!), and I accept that if I want to continue to run, I have to invest the time, money, and expertise into maintaining the machine!!! Have a good evening everyone, hope everyone enjoyed their run today?

Even though I knew that I was going to have to run through some pain and potentially some sickness I didn't plan for them to happen in the first week of the challenge. Throat feels worse and the cold air felt like it was cutting it. Tomorrow morning we are expecting rain! Bring it on...

Increased my mileage today to 2 miles. Training for long races 2 miles comes and goes in the warm-up without hardly noticing it - today I was paying close attention to each foot strike trying to determine if I am increasing my mileage too soon. It's all relative right?

Pete Day 191 - standard 3.3 mile lunchtime run by Pljrun

Just another standard 3.3 mile lunchtime run with Tony except he cracked the 28 minute barrier today, nice steady run. Would have been a two part run today but forgot to put on the watch for club training tonight, glad I ran at lunchtime !!!

Karen Day 75 and 76 - an interesting discovery!

Day 75 - http://connect.garmin.com/dashboard

Woke up really aching and full of cold, and stayed in bed whilst Matt and some friends went out cycling. Managed to surface just before lunch really dreading the run. Thought i'd get it over with rather than dreading it all day and promised myself a really easy shuffle. Once I got going I was amazed to feel re-energised and actually a bit better! When I got back home I felt like a new person - amazing considering  I would have gone nowhere near my running trainers had it not been for the challenge! A real eye opener to remember next time a cold strikes!!

Day 76 - http://connect.garmin.com/dashboard

A local run after work with Matt. Just a short run as still not back to full health but definitely getting there!

Kate - Day 7 - The first time my housemate agreed to run with me!!

Back to school for me today! 6am is not a pretty time of the day in the winter!! I considered a morning run, to get it out the way for the day, but figured the early alarm would be shock enough to the system!! So, I put in an evening "recovery" mile (after a "longer" run yesterday), accompanied by my housemate, who has refused every offer of company on a run prior to this day!! Once again, to be efficient, I twinned my run with a trip to the shop. They must be getting used to me walking through the door, catching my breath, and looking a little worse for wear.  I felt just a little closer to the runner I was about 6 weeks ago today, so it appears the slow and steady approach is paying off.  A trip to the chiropractor is scheduled for tomorrow, which has been long-needed, to sort out the biomechanical problems caused by playing Hockey!! Anyway, that's a week done!! I have vowed to celebrate the little milestones, and achievements, as trivial as they may seem!!  I hope everyone's Monday was kind to them!?

Pete Day 190 - Sunday club run with Nicky by Pljrun

Club run Sunday morning much the same as yesterday, a very nice run with very good company. Only difference it was slightly colder, once you entered the fog the temperature plummeted, having said that it was dry and a very enjoyable 11 mile run.

Charles: Day 5 & 6/365 - BUPA Winter 5k

Day 5 was the bupa winter 5k race over Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh and I was pretty please that I did it in 26 mins considering that I'm still suffering from dead legs and a hip injury that I can't seem to shake off. Never mind I've got a sports massage booked for Wednesday and might start to get one every 2 weeks.

Day 6 was supposed to be a charity 5k for Maggies Centres but the run was cancelled at the last minute so it was just a minimum 3k run around my new adopted hilly route that is just outside my front door.

Nicky: Day 145 London by Nicky.C at Garmin Connect - Details

Up to London with friends & kids plus my neice. Winter wonderland. Well is was until I fell splat on my coccyx ice-skating. OUCH!!! Was sure I had done some damage. Fine whilst walking but impossible to bend lower back, sit etc. Still my miles are the yomp around the park at this place. Think running may be a little painful from here on in!

Nicky: Day 146 Around Pitney by Nicky.C at Garmin Connect - Details

11mile trot around the lanes of Pitney with Pete from 365 challenge. Feeling a little battered so dosed up on pain killers pre-run! Coccyx not too bad whilst running but bending lower back not good at all! Getting in & out of car also interesting! At least I can run - I definatley was not overjoyed at missing a few days & having to start from day 1 a second time! Anyway, today was the longest run I have done for a little while, so legs heavy & felt really tired after 7 or so miles. Also had to walk the hills. Luckily Pete did another long run yesterday so didnt seem to hacked off with my go slow today! Sun did promise to come out, but ran mainly in grey cloud or fog. Temperature also dramatically dropped on second half & a pair of gloves would have been very welcome!

Nicky: Day 144 Missing data

Well I did a 6m run with Alf from home to Knole, towards Somerton & back. Run clearly has logged on the Garmin but as per a previous post, it refuses to download!! Have taken a photo of it as proof. Strange thing is, is that I managed to download successfully today (Sat & Sunday runs) but Fridays still refuses to budge. I will ring Garmin help line tomorrow for assistance.

A question for you...

Hi guys. I was wondering if you could offer some advice. I have just completed 200 days of the challenge and am feeling pretty good. Fitness feels ok and my 5k times have been falling consistently since I began the challenge. I am now running this distance in the fastest time that I have ever managed it. HOWEVER. I am running the Edinburgh Marathon 2013 and, I am not going to lie, I am terrified. I have completed the distance half a dozen times before and never quite managed sub 3hr. I have been within 5 minutes of the magic 3hrs three times and this year I am desperate to make up that extra few minutes. Do you think it is possible to run a marathon pb whilst participating in this challenge? I have joined a running club and am going to be building up my distance in preparation for the event and my week will now contain a couple of very slow minimum distance runs as an attempt to have some sort of 'rest day'. The main thing that concerns me is fatigue. How have you guys found the effect of the challenge on your longer runs? Have you found your times over the longer distance compared favourably to those same distances when you have not been running every day? Also if everyone has any advice on techniques to help avoid fatigue it would be much appreciated! Cheers!
