I really ache today whether it was the fall or the hill I don't know but I never ached like this after five marathons in five days !! Never mind a run is sposed to help so did just three at lunchtime, it helped until I sat down at my desk afterwards and tried to get up. (must be getting old)

Well what can I say!! Toughest thing I have done since MdS!
This race attracted 2400 competitors with a further 1200 being turned away due to the event being full!! You can enter as a solo, pair or teams of up to 8. I stupedly entered as a solo! Typical Nicky!!! Had 2 mates also doing it plus Kirstys brother in law & hubbie. Alf & my Dad came along to as team support & boy were they needed.
Event took place at Catton Park in Derbyshire & is on a horse cross country course. Hilly & pretty technical in places. Arrived to the camp site & set up tents right on part of the track. Awesome place  - like being at Glastonbury Festival with all the tents etc. Large screen set up for Olympics viewing too. Enjoyed the opening ceremony.
Race started at 12 noon on Saturday. I had come with 10 circuits as my target. Hmmmm - not easy.
Was taking around 1hr 15 - 1hr 30 p/circuit with between 10-30mins break at our tent for rest & refreshments. Dad & Alf kept the kettle on & the food flowing - needed it too. Very hot & I was averaging 800ml fluid p/circuit. Still was getting dehydrated as started having a problem peeing but felt I needed to all the time. Was stopping 4-5 times p/circuit to try!
At half past midnight I decided to call it a night after 7 circuits. I was tired & mu torch light fading anyway (I did have spare batteries). Found I was starting to trip over the tree roots constantly & my feet were killing.  Got back to tent swearing that 70km was enough & I had no intention of continuing, even after a break. Slept pretty well despite the cheering as runners continued around all thro the night. Got up at 7am feeling pretty refreshed. Had a wipe down to get rid of the mud, fresh kit, different shoes & decided I had time before the noon finish to complete my intended 10 laps.
Hurrah! Made it. Knackered.

Would not do this again as a solo but as a team event? Absolutely.

Charles: Day 268/365 - Mud Bath :))

I took my Monday night running club on a trail run through the country paths and forests around the Dalkeith area. This turned out to be great fun and hard work in the torrential rain with huge mud trails and rivers running down the paths. Totally brilliant nights running. I was covered in thick mud from head to toe. I'd forgotten how much fun trail running could be and love, love, loved it :)

Untitled by robgundry at Garmin Connect - Details
This morning I set out at 6:30 am to train for the cheddar marathon on 9th september and i managed to do 17 and a bit miles and i felt strong all the way but i was glad to finish.
All in all a good run

Tony Days 267-273/365- just another week at the office!

Finishing a miserable last week off with a little run around the park with buddy led to an overall good following week.
Burnside and rutherglen as a town is ok (I grew up in much worse) but its still a dive to run around!
Getting into pollok park and having a run is welcome relief but now that is getting boring! I might be forced to venture further and further afield to get my running kick!
Working my 5km's in with my clients these days too. I hour that nobody is annoyed that I am doing this. Perk of the job I suppose you could say!
Finished off this week with a great neg split at greens RC. These guys missed me while I was away so a lot of moaning was taking place due to the difficulty of the run!
Also feeling really tired this week. Have started training full time at Crossfit Glasgow and think I maybe overtraining a little. Have factored in for the Sunday to take it easy.

I have got into this habit of only running my minimum distance at the moment. I just can face the thoughtnofnrunning any further unless I have to!
Maybe when it come closer to the end I will have a last flourish and my daily distance will go up!!!

Having such a great time on the island and will not be fun to go back home where I have been reliably informed that it has been raining for the past couple of weeks!
Really can now think that emigrating would be a good idea!
Fourth of July was a great experience - the Americans certainly know how to put a fireworks show on!
Back in blights and yes it's still raining - cue stroppy tony having to run out in the pissing rain. Think we're owed a summer in the future!

Tony days 246-252- the week after WHW!

So after such an ordeal I needed this well deserved rest and recovery away from all the wet weather that I had experienced in Glasgow!
Knowing that we had our holiday to Martha's vineyard this week, I just had to get through the first couple of days of work!
On having to do a midnight style run the night before our flight it was extremely hard to motivate myself to get out and run!
Once there though the legs started to fully recover and the time of my 5km at Crossfit Martha's vineyard was a 19min only 5 days after WHW!
The rest of this week just involved me running to the gym and then spending the rest of the day drinking and eating!
I love holidays!

Day 29 - Seaview 17 (20.5 miles) by Pljrun

Got to Minehead and went for a long coach journey to be dropped off in the middle of nowhere, well by a pub anyway. Then it was off on a coastal run back to Minehead, called the Seaview 17 (actually 20.5 miles) Kathy from the club kept saying how good it was, she was right ! lovely route although I went over on my ankle, slipped over, banged my head and winded myself whilst also jarring my back and that was in the first 3 miles !! To be honest I felt like giving up at the first checkpoint but from there for the next few miles the route was good and I managed to get the mind right again and from then on enjoyed it. Well except for that dam hill at Bossington (I think its called) but it was up and up and up and then up again !! Pleased with my three and a half hour finnish.

Would recommend to anyone - give it a go.

Day 28 - Avery early morning run !! by Pljrun

Watched the Olympic (that word again) opening ceremony and then Paul Mccartney came on so I went out for a three mile run. Started well thought I would change my route but my light failed and I was in the middle of nowhere with no light !! every flutter in the trees or slightest sound echoed ! Very spooky. But at least I have over 30 hours till next run.

An early morning run today, Olympic Day ( can I use that word now?) Don't want to miss the opening so came out for my three miler early, managed to get up and have some time before running, it does make a difference, I really enjoyed this morning. Still quiet though, but cool. Am going to try a midnight Friday run for my Saturday run as Sunday is a 22 miler it will give me more time between runs.

Another lunchtime run with Tony, very very hot, tried the oposite way round today, funny how one way seems more awkward than the other. Maybe because it was hotter and the last two miles are in the complete open this way. Never mind still not put Tony off.

VERY hot evening for the monthly club medal! My sciatica playing up big time despite all the exercises I am trying to do to sort it. Also tummy feeling a bit like a washing machine for some reason - too much fruit juice & water today I think! Not good for the monthly medal but any exscuse too! New it wouldnt be a PB night for me. Set off at with a club pal, Sue to pace each other. Struggled to get my breathing settled & was pleased for having my water bottle with me, if only to wash down all the flies I kept getting in my mouth. Came in in 52:25 which was 2:21 slower than last month! Not really too surprised though.  Felt quite nauseous at end of run though. Poor old Sue, however, came in 2mins after me.

Jack: Day 35/365...New Turf

Today I had a hard day moving flat! As I signed the lease on my new place in Shawlands I started driving my things across town. I still have the lease on the current flat and so am able to leave a few bits and pieces here until the end of the month however I am flying to London this evening in preparation for the Olympics! Even so I will be pushed for time when I return to Glasgow so I wanted to transfer as much as possible to the new property. Unfortunately Vicki was at work so this meant doing the majority of he work on my own! One thing which made the job even harder was the fact that I am moving form the third floor of one block of flats to the third floor of another! That is a lot of stairs especially when you are loaded up with boxes of DVDs and books! After a few hours of transporting stuff to the flat I decided to have a crack at my 5k for the day and explore my new surroundings. As I set off into Queens Park I was really impressed with the park. It was an awesome place to run and the amazing weather definitely added to the experience. I completed 5kilometres running a perimeter of the park but will need to tweak the route a little bit in order to add a little distance (I had to run past my flat for a minute or so in order to reach the 5k target distance). It was a really nice run and I can't wait to have a chance to explore the area a bit more. As I fly south this evening to visit family and watch the Olympics the next few runs will take place around South London and so will add another twist of variety to my run365challenge!! Exciting times!

Jack: Day 33-34/365

These runs were again just simple out and back jogs along the Clyde to CrossFit. I took them fairly easy and felt strong. At this evenings Crossfit session I managed to achieve a new 5rep max on my back squat at 100kg which was an awesome way to end the day. The running is still feeling good however I haven't had a race in a while and so I think I will have a crack at another Parkrun soon in order to monitor my fitness. It would be nice to be pushing for another personal best soon...especially with the added motivation that I am getting from watching all of the Olympic build up!!

Charles: Day 259 to 261/365 - Where did the weekend go?

Busy weekend with having to work to meet some deadlines so it was a late 11.30pm Saturday night 5k (day 259) and a 12.04am Sunday morning 5k (day 260). This meant that I had all day on the Sunday to fire up the works laptop and get some work done.

Day 261 was at 7pm with the running club on the Monday night. My previous run finished at 12.35am on the Sunday night. By my reckoning that's just under 42 and a half hours of a rest. This running late at night and early morning definitely works and allows more recovery time. I benefited tonight from the rest and felt fairly fresh in the heavy rain. The run itself was really slow paced because my group was of a very mixed ability. The group get on really well and don't mind waiting for the slower runners to catch up. I made some of the more advanced runners do a wee bit extra to loop round to chase the slower runners. Great nights running!

Longer run today. It was a bit over 8 miles, however the garmin connection was playing up and I had to stop at about 1/2 way and start again. To my annoyance I had restarted running and was about 1/2 a mile into it again when I realized that I had not turned it on again. Lost the plot a bit and started walking as it was very very hot...got myself together and continued on. I was glad to finished and get into the cool air-conditioning. Eight am run with the club today Paul and I went off to do 18 miles, it was glorious sun from start to finish. Was a bit dubious about how I would feel as it is the longest run since I started the challenge, but, felt great and am now looking forward to the Seaview 17 next weekend. Lovely route with a nice long flat ending, all the hills out of the way in the first 13 miles, it was just so nice to have really good weather it certainly lifts the spirits.

Jack: Day 32/365...One week till the boxing!

This morning I was still suffering slightly with my back so decided to stick to a gentle 5k around Kelvingrove Park. The run itself was fairly steady and my back felt absolutely fine. Having completed the run in the morning I gave myself the rest of the day to get some bits and pieces together for my trip to London on Wednesday. Vicki and I managed to get some tickets for the boxing a while back and so will be sitting watching a couple of bouts next Sunday, soaking up the atmosphere at the Games. It is going to be an awesome few days and should also give me a bit of variety with my running. Whilst this is only day 32 of my challenge the reality is that I have completed 91 days of running out of the last 92 days and the vast majority of these have taken place around my flat in Glasgow. As I will also be moving to a new flat on the other side of the city when I return from London I look forward to discovering a few more 'new routes' around the south of Glasgow.

Jack: Day 31/365...Back trouble

This morning I woke up with a ridiculously sore back. Yesterdays CrossFit workout had involved a strongman style 'yoke-walk' - loading up a yoke across your shoulders with as much weight as possible and walking the length of the room. This was my first real experience of the 'yoke' and so I felt the effects as I rolled out of bed this morning for the run! I decided to stick to the minimum 5k in order to allow my body a chance to rest and then ended the run with a hot bath. Hopefully things will be less sore tomorrow!

Jack: Day 26-30/365...To the box

The runs this week were all simple runs too and from the CrossFit Glasgow box. As I am now coaching the Fundamentals sessions I have managed to settle into a regular routine of coaching a morning session and then a second evening sessions on Mondays to Fridays. This means that some days I have completed the loop a couple of times and so managed to exceed the 5k total.

Late night last night but I only had 3 small glasses of wine as I knew I had to be up early for the run. Had decided that I was only going to do around 10m anyway as friends over this afternoon, speed work tomorrow & the club 10k time trial on Wednesday - dont want to knacker myself out too much. 5 of turned out but not all wanting to do the same distance. I did 10.5m with a couple of club mates. Gorgeous sunny morning although by 08:15 we were already a trio of sweaty bettys! I am not complaining though. I need to get rid of my rust!! Really enjoyed the run & met a lovely lady on the day walking her ex army dog! Jed was sicked out of the services due to a shoulder injury. Gorgeous animal!!

Marg - Day 249-255/365 Challenge - Crazy runs in Chicago and Carmel cools down a bit!

Trying to fit in work and family holiday events and house renovations has made running a little hard this week but managed to get it all in.

This was just a run up to Gray Rd and back. Bit stiff after my longer run the day before.
Day 249/365 Challenge. by margcurtis13 at Garmin Connect - Details

Went up to Chicago for work meeting and had some nice runs along Michigan lake shore and in the city. You will see from the first one that the satellite went a bit crazy while I was in amongst the buildings bit was fine while I was running aling the lakeshore and down Navy Pier. It had been a hot day but late at night on the water's edge was very nice.
Day 250/365 Challenge by margcurtis13 at Garmin Connect - Details

I had not noticed that the buildings were affecting the sat nav yesterday and headed off today partly along the lakeshore and also in the city. Part way through my run I paused while the lights were against me and accidentally ended the run. By the time I got the sat connection again it was after midnight and so I thought I would just get another run in for the next day even though I was 0.06 miles short of my minimum for the run I had just accidentally completed.
Day 251/365 Challenge by margcurtis13 at Garmin Connect - Details

You will see from the maps of these two runs that the sat nav was not coping at all. It looks like I was doing something crazy!! And was somehow able to run straight through the John Hancock Building and back again in a few seconds!! Pretty strong! Anyway when I looked at was going on and I have decided to combine these two runs as they were run consecutively and just call it one as I think I covered about 2 1/2 miles but definitely not the distance reflected in the map and there is no way I can run a less than 6 min/mile pace!!

Day 252/365 B - Challenge by margcurtis13 at Garmin Connect - Details

Did a double run tonight as I was taking the kids to King's Island (roller coaster theme park) tomorrow. This has proven to be a very effective strategy for getting the daily runs done but creating some breathing space for travel or other events - great thinking Charles!! I will be using it a few times before the full year is out. Perhaps we need to capture some of our "coping strategies" on the blog to help newcomers!

Not much too say. Popped out for a quick (slow) 2miler. Legs heavy & I am struggling with sciatica again on my left side. Settled after a mile or so, so should be ok for longish run on Sunday.

Doesnt look like I have my Frome Half Mara place (I was reserve list) so I will run with the club tomorrow morning. They are planning an 18miler but I shall probably stop when they reach my house & collect the car later! Legs still took a mile or so to settle on this trot & sciatic pain is a bit ouch!! Second mile was fine but it is a bit muggy - not complaining though as no rain for a few days now. Has summer arrived? I hope so!!!

Day 12 by Sallycinn

since starting this challenge I feel possessed with a new kind of determination and motivation.  Of course I didn't feel like running as soon as I woke up but I didn't snooze and up I got and went out for my run.  When you have to do it there's no point procrastinating as you either do it now or later - there's no way you can get out of it.  Already this has changed my attitude towards other parts of my life! :)

Lunchtime run today with Tony from work, set watch (took 10 mins to lock on) and off we went. We were about a mile in and I checked my watch to find we had only done .15 mile I had lost sat lock !! (straight line on map !) stopped got signal and off we went. Had to do a bit extra on way round to find 3.04 miles!! There may be a case for a spare watch me thinks.

Three runs and over 8.5 miles. The first was a lunchtime bruiser, the second was a scorcher with a big hill climb and the third was a bet with Michelle that I could run from the local shops up the big hills and get home first. I won the bet that I covered almost 1km in less time it took her to go for a pint of milk and drive home. I won by over 5 minutes!!

I felt pretty good today and I need to get some distance training in for the Glasgow Half Marathon on the 2nd September :)

Nicky: Day 267 Muddy stumble with club!! by knickerscat at Garmin Connect - Details

Thighs still stiff from Monday so fancied a nice slow trot this evening with the club. Got myself dragged along on a 5miler which was fine but unfortunatly I was not wearing trail shoes & the group decided to go off road! Lots of slipping in the mud. Very slow run due to the conditions, which in hind site - we should have stuck to the roads. I now have 3 pairs of tackies (running shoes) in the shed covered in mud waiting for me to get the hose pipe & scrubbing brush on. I hear it may be sunny at the weekend. Guess what I will be doing - cleaning tackies!!

Day 9 by Sallycinn

Day 9 by Sallycinn went a different route this morning...quite excititng actually - to go somewhere I've never been before, even if it's just round the houses.  I used my instinct as to where to go and ended up back home earlier than I had wanted.  Tomorrow I can do it again though - and go a bit further. That's the beauty of this challenge. :)

Man down

Friends - with a heavy heart I have to announce I've decided to withdraw from the the challenge.

I did a huge amount of thinking after the Saunders re what to do about the three days I missed leading up to it, due to back problems.

Having run some 170 days or so, the prospect of starting over is not something I felt I could put my family through - it would be unfair, given how intrusive it is currently on family life. Also, during Saunders I realised the true impact of running every day was having on my overall fitness...

I've got some other Mountain marathons coming up this year that I want to put a good show in for so I could really benefit from more of a structured training regime that through necessity needs to include rest days.

The challenge is to run every day for 365 days, and I'm not sure it's fair to the challenge, and to you my fellow loonies, for me to simply add a few days on to the end of the challenge. I fear to do so would simply be the thin end of the wedge (for me at least) ("I don't feel like running today therefore I'll just add it on at the end" sort of stuff is not the sort of habit any of us should fall into). So in perhaps a slightly skewed sense of logic, loyalty to you and and large dose of respect for the challenge itself and what you're all continuing to do so admirably inspite of everything, I've decided to stop.

Having said all this, I really look forward to continuing to support you all on this fantastic challenge!!

Charles: Day 254 & 255/365 - Club Run & Easy Run

Day 254 was with the running club. It was a great night with a mixture of trail and road running. It was a mixed ability group that I had to split and send in different directions to give the more advanced runners a bit more distance to cover. Hard work keeping the group together but great fun when making some people run further and trying to get them to cover the extra distance in the same time it takes the others to reach the meeting points.

Day 255 was a simple recovery run to Michelle's work so that I could get a lift back home. I only wanted to do the minimum distance tonight because I was feeling tired after a long day at work.

Day 17 by Pljrun -Tired Today

Started this morning late in everything, traffic nightmares. Dropped off car and started run to work with hill towards Rumwell, by the time I got to the last hill (well more like the head of a pimple on this great earth) I felt like I was running on one leg up Snowdon with a 500lb pack on my back !! Never mind another 4.5 miles and another day.

Todays run was supposed to be a three miler at lunchtime, but exhaust fell off car and all plans changed. So went to speed training for the adults and children tonight that took the first 3.23 miles and the remainder of the seven was my daily run. At least the sun shone tonight and the rain kept away. Had actually planned to do the 8am club run but had a late night last night & didnt wake up til 07:45!! HO HUM! Dragged myself out at 10:30 keeping one eye on the very dark skies. Had expected a real soaking but it actually stayed dry. Did 11m & really enjoyed it. Funny thing was there is quite a hill coming up from Park towards Somerton. I usually walk this hill. On the approach 3 young teenage boys cycled past then promptly got off their bikes to push them up the hill! Well I couldnt very well walk could I? Trotted past them & did make it to the top without walking once! Not bad for an old girl! Made me smile! :D

Day 8 by Sallycinn at Garmin Connect - Details

Day 8 by Sallycinn ....well, it is Monday morning and to be honest, I can't get used to running so early.  Roll on August! But, I still did it. :)

Day 7 Being back in Bristol is a bit disorientating when you're away all week. So I decided to run an old route to feel like I was at home. The Downs in Bristol are lovely and it's where all us city folk go to get a bit of greenery and still be in the city. It's also high up and you get a great view of the river and the Bridge. 3 miles today but it felt hard work. Not sure if it's because I'm still getting used to running every day or I've just eaten one too many puds recently. But, I'm loving the challenge and will try to run 2ms every day next week - just to up the mileage a bit. Have a good week everyone. :)

Day 15 by Pljrun

Sunday morning, up at seven, pop a couple of pips and off for the 8am club run. We decided to stay on road as all other exits from Langport are either flooded or so muddy you fall flat on your face. So off we go and do a lovely relatively flat 8.5 miler with a bit of drove running in the middle. Lovely weather, lovely company an all round great run. Amazing how good nice weather can make you feel !!

Day 14 by Pljrun Not as PLANNED

Well the 18 miler never happened, got out the car last night, felt a twinge and could hardly stand up this morning (trapped nerve) oh well a few pips later I could move better so went for a 4.5 miler. Coped ok enjoyed the thunder and got around before the rain. Thats my first event that I have had to pull out of, so this challenge is going to consist of lots of firsts like running two weeks none stop !! only 50 to go.

Charles: Day 253/365 - Sunday Hills

Early Sunday morning run around where I stay because I was going for a wee visit to the National Museum of Scotland since it was refurbished. The run was a tiring and heavy legged one because where I stay is nothing but big frigging hills. Oh, and I preferred the museum before the refurbishment because I think there was more to see and do. Now I think there's a lot of space that could be used for more exhibits if they moved a few things around a bit.

Jack: Day 24-25/365...Games Time.

Day 24 and I woke up with a slightly sore head for some reason! I decided against completing my run this morning and instead opted for a nice cup of tea followed by a lunchtime trip to Nandos! After a decent feed and a couple of coffees I was all set for the long drive back down to Glasgow. Once back in my own flat I decided to head straight out and get the run done as quickly as possible. This way I would be able to finish and enjoy watching day 2 of the Crossfit Games. Whilst on the run I decided to add a few hundred metres to my usual river route in order to swing past the CrossFit Glasgow Box. I thought the guys from the gym may be watching the Games on the projector but I realised as I passed that the box was all closed up. Returning home I checked the latest scores before calling it a night.

Day 25 and I had no plans!. Whilst not the most productive of days it was nice to relax and enjoy a day of  lounging around the flat reading my book and doing a bit of general sorting out. I went out and completed the 5k by jogging my old route around Kelvingrove Park. As I am due to move flat in a couple of weeks I will not be as close to the park anymore and so I thought it would be good to make the most of having it on my doorstep whilst it was still there! I am looking forward to discovering some new routes when I move out to Shawlands!

Jack: Day 22-23/365...Vicki's Graduation

On day 22 I found myself back up in Aberdeen. With Vicki graduating at lunch time I decided to get up early and complete my 5k before heading into town for the ceremony. This would mean that I could relax for the rest of the day without the prospect of a run looming over me. I was out the door for 6:45 and enjoyed a steady 5k around the scenic Aden Park. Whilst I didn't see any deer on this outing it was really nice to be jogging around the park and it was a welcome change of scenery. Vicki's ceremony was good (even if it did drag on a little!!) and the post-ceremony lunch was even better! An amazing bit of steak followed by sticky toffee pudding left me glad that I had already completed my run for the day!

Day 23 and I had a much more relaxed start to the day. With a later start I was able to enjoy a long lie in bed with my book (A Dance with Dragons - the latest in the Game of Thrones series of books!). Eventually I tore myself aware and followed the same route as yesterday around Aden Park. This evening was spent at Vicki's Graduation ball and it was a great night. We had a really good meal and a couple of drinks at the ball itself before heading into town and ending the night in Malone's Late Bar. Whilst the post-night out chips with cheese still made me feel slightly guilty, knowing that I am running everyday definitely helped!

Well here we go again, having got drenched taking the dogs out may as well get even wetter having a run. Not disappointed – got extremely wet! But completed another day and another 4 miles.

Day 11 by Pljrun at Garmin Connect - Details

Club night and a run with the young ones ! Doing four miles with them is like running a marathon, well I feel as tired afterwards anyway. At least the rain held off.

Day 10 by Pljrun at Garmin Connect - Details

Got home, took the dogs out and then went for a run, tried a new route to find another 3 miler. Not bad, that’s three different routes now around home, so won’t get too bored !.

Day 9 by Pljrun at Garmin Connect - Details

Went for a lunchtime three miler to avoid the rain, got three quarters of a mile into the run and yep, you guessed I got soaked !! The rain came down, I am sure it just waited for me to go. Never mind I am sure it will get worst in the winter.

Day 8 by Pljrun at Garmin Connect - Details

Normal club run this morning, nice weather and a nice circular route to the north east of Langport, combining off and on road with hills, wooded areas and riverside. What a great run this was full of everything from running through thigh high grass, waist high crops and finally knee high in water due to overflowing rivers !! Had more fun than when I was a kid running through puddles !! Over 10 miles of pure pleasure.

Charles: Day 251/365 - Are you not bored yet?

Yet again I did another lunchtime run and felt okay. The good thing was that it wasn't as muggy today and I managed to enjoy the run in a cooling breeze.

I was also asked "Are you still doing the challenge? Are you not bored with running?". My answer is that I'm bored with the same old routes but I'll never get bored of fed up running and YES I'm still doing the challenge and will continue until I drop! :)

Nicky: Day 262 Round & about in the dry!!!

2 rare occurences happened on this evenings run:
-  it didnt rain!
-  a big bright warm thing in the sky appeared (albeit briefly)  YAY!!
Really enjoyed this evenings run. I actually clocked 3.5m but my Garmin memory is full so it only logged 3m. I didnt realise it still hung on to past history once down loaded to Garmin Connect! Have deleted all off the Garmin now.
Off to see Chariots of Fire at the pictures tonight for more running inspiration!

With my new jacket and backpack i ran back from work after the lunch shift and did 1.25 miles. I felt good and im pleased with my new gear as the pack didnt bounce around.
I must say that im already feeling the benefits of running everyday and i know im only 25 days in but im glad im getting support from the fellow runners doing this even though some of my friends have called me "f$%^ing mental" !! Well i dont care what they say as i think comments like that come from lazy sods..
Till tomorrow ta ta

Nicky: Day 260 Yeovilton 5k race by knickerscat at Garmin Connect - Details

Bit of a soggy afternoon again! Was hoping that this evenings race would remain dry as my newton "racing" shoes are definatly not water proof! This is supposed to be the summer race series! Some blinkin summer!
Arrived in good time & chatted to the other Langport runners. Felt ok & gradually overtook a few folk without being overtaken myself. I like it when this happens cos I feel that i havnt gone out to fast & burnt myself out
Finished in 23:56 which is not a PB but only 9 seconds off it. Cross fingers for next month!! :D

Day 23/365

Had a flat watch battery so I used my Nike+ app with attached photo to prove I did this run
Hope this is ok guys

Charles: Day 249/365 - Wet feet, again!

Another lunch time run in the muggy and drizzle rain. Felt ok but getting a wee bit fed up of having wet feet now. I bought new trainers 3 weeks ago and I think it's rained every day since. The trainers are stinking because they're not getting a chance to dry out. Can I please have a dry day and some sunshine please!?

Jack: Day 19-21/365...Out and back.

These runs were all divided into two parts as I ran to and from CrossFit. They all followed the same route along the river and covered my 5k minimum. I am heading up to Aberdeen this afternoon as Vicki will be graduating from University tomorrow. It will be nice to get out and about for some new runs over the next few days although I am already dreading my 5k on Saturday morning as I am attending the Graduation Ball on Friday night. It could be a slow one!

Charles: Day 248/365 - Hi Ho Hi Ho

Lunch time run and I decided to go a wee bit further than usual since I was feeling ok(ish). There was no wind and it was a light drizzle and I must've lost half my body weight in sweat. Enjoyed the run but felt heavy legged when I got back to the changing room and I struggled a wee bit my my breathing as I've got a bit of a chest cold.

Headed out this afternoon for my trusty one mile run thinking that i would be sore but i wasn't too bad after yesterdays 15.6 mile run. I was in such a good mood today i have ordered some new gear ready for my longer training runs. I've got a new backpack , camel back thingy and a new wet weather coat.
Also I'm reading alot of these books

Same route for both days. 5k just around the lanes. Both runs were in the rain although at least its not cold. Still keeping the running very slow although the heavy old lead legs seem to be getting better. They better had as its the Yeovilton 5k race tomorrow evening. Dont think it will be PB material though!! :D

Benjours 172-174 Back trouble and Saunders MM report

well, last weeks back trouble resolved itself with some gentle staggering about and stretching I started this week just gone on a bad one.. Monday 2nd July I was busy with work all day and had left the run to the evening, and then at 6pm, just after I got home with kids, wife volunteered to go back into hospital to do a transplant from father to child from the Falklands - she got home at 01:30, which meant I had to miss Monday's run altogether. Nothing I could do about it, I can't leave the kids by themselves of course (not yet anyway)..

To make matters worse - on Tuesday I slipped on the floor in the boot room at Ollie's school whilst hanging his stuff on his peg (I was wearing a pair of Toms, which is why I slipped, it had been raining outside, though the floor was dry, my own fault)- I practically did the splits, suffice to say I was in a world of pain in my back - thoracic vertebrae this time, not sacral like last week. This was a very different back pain to last weeks - it was immediate and nothing I could do could make the pain go away... Tues, Wed and Thursday nights I couldn't sleep/get comfortable, couldn't sit, very difficult to drive... running was simply not going to happen and it didn't, it couldn't .. I was thinking of jacking in Saunders this weekend just gone.. by Friday I could keep upright without pain so on Friday evening I gingerly drove for nearly 6 hrs up to the Lakes. My big sister has a house in Windermere with a great Italian restaurant just around the corner - I stuffed some good carpaccio and some pasta down my neck and tried to sleep.

I think with hindsight that I must have torn some core muscle on the back right hand side, around my liver towards my spine, though it did have some weird pain radiating "through" me from my back to my tummy - wife confirmed it was nothing boney or neural/trapped nervey.

Anyway, in the morning I felt pretty good, though I was soon to suffer my usual "jetlag-like" symptoms I get when I wake up really early and don't eat enough first thing... I'd left an hour to get from Windermere to Wastwater thinking it wasn't that far (it isn't, as the crow flies!) - turns out it's nearer 2 hrs drive... and it's all on windy roads - my pseudo jet lag, combined with eating little so early int he morning, combined with driving a powerful car on windy roads meant I got serious travel sickness which was really unpleasant (and meant I had to slow down) - I almost barfed on a marshall at the field gate when I finally arrived... not the best start to a MM - by the time I got checked in, was briefed, had transcribed the checkpoints for the weekend onto my map I was 45 mins late getting onto the fell...this was to cost me big time on the Sunday (yesterday).

I'd entered the Klets class which is a solo class since I couldn't find a partner free to run it with me (which meant I could have entered a lower, somewhat easier class!!) - Elite class it was to be. There were 51 solo entrants registered and 41 turned up on the day. I gave myself the objective of not coming last.

The splits have just been posted online and interestingly I was the only one who took the Southerly option of checkpoints on Day 1... nearly 21 miles of fell with 6,300ft climb. (LAMM was 6,700ft climb with the same distance on Day 1 also) - we were promised miserable weather which I'd prepped for which never materialised which meant I needed a lot more salt/electrolytes to ward of cramping in my quads - I wasn't expecting it to be so sunny or warm!!.. the late start meant that I couldn't get to two (or at a squeeze three) checkpoints on Day 1 which would, it runs out have a massive impact on my Day 2 run.

Overnight camp was great - I made the cut by 12 mins - Been out for over 9 hrs. The organisers close the fell at 6pm for solo competitors and if you're not back in by this time, you're presumed to be in the merde and so they call Mountain Rescue out - being the Elite class quite rightly they presume eveyone can handle themselves in the hills and make the right judgement calls to ensure they make the cut in time...if you're not back in time then something is wrong... if you're running with a partner then there is more leeway since the idea is that worse case the partner can run to get help/notify the organisers what's going on etc..

Overnight in the tent was spent re-checking grid references for the host of checkpoints I'd left on the fell to get on Day 2. I realised as I was falling asleep that my back was utterly fine and had not given me any grief at all - I'd been preoccupied with feeling carsick and then focussing on the task in hand and had no pain - even running with a rucksac full of kit.

Day 2 was a shorter timelimit (7 hrs cf 9) but given the two checkpoints I should have got on Day 1, but didn't have time to, going to get them on Day 2 took about 2.5 hrs out of my schedule and in the wrong direction to where I needed to be to bag the rest of the points - we started at 7 am and I realised by 11am I was never going to make the cut/be off the fell in time and so took the decision to retire from the race. - It was the right decision and I learnt an awful lot.

The biggest learning is that I'm simply not fit enough (yet), but I did meet my objective - I didn't come last, I was penultimate, but not last, and that makes me smile! - Someone also didn't get all the checkpoints, but they took longer to "finish" than I did, and that little detail is an important one to me and it makes me smile!

The highlight of the entire weekend's running in Wasdale was a purely chance encounter with a personal hero - Joss Naylor, MBE stood outside his house having just come back from a run over the fells at the age of 76 - not a bead of sweat on him! Utterly charming, modest and unassuming. I did a double take and realised who he was I just had to stride over to him, apologising and insisting I had to shake his hand... he was kind enough to ask "how are you getting on?" - I muttered something about my frustration with my late start on Day 1 had cost me on Day 2 and he smiled knowingly, "ah once you've lost it, you never get it back... no, you never get it back.." and there it was! never have wiser words been said! Words that resonate with me even now, from one of my heroes in a chance encounter.. If I'd not taken the decision out on the fell to retire from the race when I did, I would have missed Joss Naylor some 2 hours later...and who knows, I may never have met this truly remarkable man... spooky, but what a personal thrill and memory.. and to make things even better I've just discovered that one of my MdS tent mates, Hilary Bloor is a living legend too - Hils you dark horse!!
Hils and Joss Naylor

Take a look at the Saunders stuff on Satellite view - the terrain is stunning. The ridge to the North of my Day 2 playground was where all the chekpoints where that I would never have gotten to in time.

As to what I do about the days I've now missed due to incapacity with my back... the only thing I can offer is that I add them onto my schedule - having come so far on this challenge... the thought of starting again makes me despondent... views anyone??
