59/365 The end of Month 2 by Big Kev

59/365 The end of Month 2 by Big Kev at Garmin Connect - Details

Its hard to believe we are at the end of month 2 already and the time and miles have racked up. I have enjoyed just about every step and thank all my family and friends for their support along the way. The totals for the month are in 133 miles, 17:12:41 and a shed load of calories! The cumulative totals are 267 miles over 35:11:12.

The month ahead will bring new challenges and new routes and with every day I find myself getting more and more attached to the end goal. I have been humbled by the support already shown for Macmillan and I will keep spreading the word far and wide, so please share with this with everyone you know.

In Newbury with work so set off for a very muddy 5miler. Gorgeous area for running but because of the darn weather, it was pretty slippy. Fell over catching my face & ear in a bramble bush! Back to the trusty min of a mile today as my ankle has not changed overnight so I wore a support on it during the run and then used an ice pack on it after and it seems to be helping. But besides the pain I'm feeling good and confident for the next 2 big races, the Yeovil half marathon and of course the London marathon.
Oh and here's a picture of Laura

The day after the big one. And my weak left ankle has started to ache and feel bruised but no swelling and no bruise colour ! I had the same for a month or 2 last year but I don't know why it's back but tonight I managed the 10k route with the running club. But I forgot to start the watch for the 1st 3/4 mile, you'd think after 254 days I'd remember to start it when I start running. Oh well I best take it easy for a few days

Karen Day 128

http://app.strava.com/activities/42547838

Set out for a longer run today and felt really good for the first 4 miles. Thought I'd keep pushing to get a good 10k time and managed a 10k PB which I was really pleased with. Then the trouble started as my left foot started hurting. Slowed the pace and tried to take the weight off the ball of my foot which made the outside start hurting so I called it a day and walked the remaining mile or so back to the house. Been having trouble with my foot over about the 6 mile mark for a while but nothing so make me stop running so a bit worried about it now....

58/365 GWR Winter 6 mile (extended to 10K) by Big Kev at Garmin Connect - Details

A great night at the club and a speedy whirl around the club winter 6 mile route. I extended to 10K as I still had a little more to give. Lots of excited nerves around the club with Bath Half marathon on Sunday which I hope to support from the sidelines with cheers of encouragement.

Almost at the end of another month and the mileage keeps climbing, still as enthusiastic as ever though.

Charles: Day 56 to 58/365 - Pain?

Another 3 runs where the pain in my right hip and thigh has been almost unbearable. I had a sports massage and after a number of weeks we've finally discovered my trouble is hidden deep in the Psoas major muscle. The only way to 'fix' it is for me to endure some really painful deep tissue massages. The massage has left bruising on my right thigh and groin area and I've developed a hobble as I walk.

I've also had some blood tests taken to see what else is going on because I'm really struggling this time around on the challenge and I have no idea why. My marathon training is currently on hold until I get the results back from the doc.

An easy 'rest day' recovery run of minimum distance, a bit drizzly but didn't seem as cold as it has been. Does anyone else use the 'cold bath' method to help recover after a long run? I've done it several times before and it really does work, but this time I just held a cold shower over my legs after yesterdays run for a long as I could bear and today I feel as fresh as a daisy! Worth a try if you haven't before!

Saturday Day 238 tried a little longer than minimum to see how the chesty cough was coping, seemed ok till I got home.

Sunday Day 239 was supposed to be a twenty miler with Martin from club, decided to cut it short at just short of twelve, think the last 8 would have finished me off and I have every day to think of.

Today Day 240 had to take the afternoon of for the local paper to get a photo of me, to help with my cause (raising awareness to Kidney donation and trying to raise some funds for a cause close to my heart http://www.kidneyresearchukevents.org/Peterun), so after that was done did the local 10k route. Jack: Day 249/365...A long one!

This morning I got up and made my way out for my weekly long run. The plan was to rack up 14miles at a nice gentle pace and to try and make up as much of the run as possible on the grass to save my knees! I made my way down to the river and then made a winding route around Glasgow Green. As I left the park I worked my way back towards the flat and threw in a quick loop of Queen's Park to make up the miles. I reached my front door just after the 14mile mark flashed up on my Garmin and I made it in 1hr 34mins. This meant that I was running at 6mins45secs/mile. If I can maintain that pace for another 12 miles (!!) that would give me a 2hrs 57mins marathon. That would be perfect! Now to just work on the final 12 miles! My average heart rate today was 146bpm which suggests I should have a little left in the tank. I will up the miles again next week and see how things go...

Jack: Day 248/365...Another Parkrun

This morning I felt rough. No idea why but I woke up with a horrible cough and a really sore head. I wasn't even out last night! Nevertheless I trundled out of the door and jogged down to parkrun. Having scored a new PB last week I was feeling pretty happy about my fitness levels although with an increase in my mileage this week I was not confident in beating last weeks time. As the starter announced 'Go!' I made my way off the start line and really wasn't feeling great however I passed the 1km mark just 2 seconds slower than the last time. I couldn't quite keep up with last weeks pace however I finished in just over 17minutes and so was pretty happy. I know I am not going to be scoring records every single week at Parkrun, especially now that my weekly mileage is increasing, however it is nice to be close...

Charles: Day 52 to 55: Sad old man in tears....not a pretty sight

Mainly minimum distance runs. I was supposed to do a 12 mile training run on Saturday morning and had planned on doing 5 miles before going to the running club. Unfortunately I couldn't do the 12 miles because I couldn't walk when I got out of bed as my injured right hip had totally seized up and my knee was excruciatingly painful. I had to hobble the 3k minimum and Michelle followed me in the car in case anything 'bad' happened to my leg. I made the 3k but was in tears with the pain and I've been totally peed off with myself all weekend because I'm now behind with my marathon training :(

Managed to resist pudding but had to work hard to resist an afternoon nap when we got home!

Time not accurate as started garmin before start. I think I could have gone faster but it was very cold and I wanted to enjoy it. Nice marshalls who were very encouraging and I finished happy and really glad I had done it.  Next year I'll improve my time. :)

Jack: Day 243-247/365

A few more midweek runs to add to the collection. I tried to add a few more miles to the tally and so three of these are the minimum distance and the other two are 10k and 8k each. The early morning efforts have had to be limited to the minimum distance so far purely for the sake of getting them finished before work. These 6am starts are pretty tough just now as it is still very cold however it is nice coming home after work and being able to concentrate on my marking and planning rather than having to think about jogging round the block. I am also aware however that if I am to record a half decent time at Edinburgh in a few months I will need to add in a few longer runs. The plan currently is to do parkrun on a Saturday morning to give me a fast 5k run once a week. I will do a long run on the Sunday and then try to get one middle of the road effort in during the week. Once I am able to get back to the running club I hope to add a weekly track session to my training also. Fingers crossed that will see me through!

Posted a little late, but its been a very busy week at work and home, so it has taught me that if I can still get the run in then the balance is probably about right.

I extended the club 6 mile route to make it a 10K as I have a race on Sunday and I thought I would see how I was feeling! Tired is the answer and yet even though its a hilly route I have posted the quickest 10k for the year, go figure?

Have never understood it

Haven't been feeling the running thing - cold weather, wet weather, windy, no days off...blah blah blah. This morning I wake to a sore throat and stuffed sinuses - drag myself out of bed like I'm walkin the mile. Don't I make this mornings run the longest of the entire challenge for myself? What is up with that? I can't be the only one this happens to because the phenomenon of my body turning corners that will make my run longer than I wanted it to be despite the protests of my lazy self has happened so many times throughout this running life. Its almost as if "I" am just along for the ride and some other part of "me" is driving the bus. When I reread what I have just wrote it sounds pretty crazy - but I think you will get it.

Charles: Day 51/365 - Massage and run

Just a wee 10k run in the freezing cold but refreshingly invigorating. The only problem was that I had an hour long sports massage just before I went for the run and my leg muscles were a little tender from all the torture they had just endured.

After a very early start and a wonderfully manic day what wasn't needed was a 95min journey home, to miss club night! Remaining positive though, at least it meant I would be home early from my run and I could finish some work off before bed.

Really feeling tired today, so any words of encouragement are gratefully recieved.

Karen Day 118 - 120

Day 118 - http://app.strava.com/activities/41633621
A four mile run after work. Headed towards Bayford to see if I came across Matt cycling home but he had other plans and finished a bit later. A good training hill at Bayford for the Yeovil half marathon's Henford Hill. Definitely feeling stronger up the hills.

Day 119 - http://app.strava.com/activities/41633618
Just a recovery run on a rest day - easy mile round the block

Day 120 - http://app.strava.com/activities/41633619
What a lovely morning for a run! Sun shining through a light mist, bit chilly bit nothing some gloves can't sort out! Matt headed off for a swim so the plan was to run the 8 miles to the pool to meet him afterwards for a lift home. Enjoyed the run and was a nice change to be heading for a finish point rather than just going in a circle. Was pleased with my pace overall but noticed on the mile splits when uploading the run that most of it was downhill!! Oh well, still a good confidence boost. First long run in the Brooks and all's well.

Jack: Day 242/365...Whitelees Wind farm!

This morning I woke up bright and early to as Emma from work came to pick me up. We drove out to Whitelees Wind farm to join the rest of team 'Paisley Glamour' for our first training run together. Most of the guys were able to make it and so it was as a group of five that we headed out across the wind farm. I had never been out to this area before and it was a bit of an eye opener. I couldn't believe the size of the wind farm! Hundreds of turbines dominated the horizon everywhere I turned and towered above me as I stood below them. A very impressive landscape! This made the run a very interesting one as it gave me a completely new set of sights to take in. It was very different to my standard 6am loop along the busy road to Giffnock and back! It was a nice reminder that I am doing this challenge because, essentially, I love running. It is easy to forget that running can be a pleasure when your daily experience of it is forcing yourself out of bed in the cold and wet to run along a straight, boring road that you have run so many times you could do it with your eyes closed (although this is not a theory I will be putting to the test for health and safety reasons!).

And so I found myself working at a gentle pace for 8miles with good company and a nice view. The weather was absolutely perfect and there was even a suggestion that it was a bit warm at one point! A very enjoyable run and a good reminder of why I started the challenge - I am looking forward to more of the same!

50/365 Gloucester office 5k by Big Kev at Garmin Connect - Details

A day that definitely felt like Spring, the sun was shining and it was great to be outdoors. This was my first venture out from our office in Gloucester and so the facilities, as well as the run were on test. It's nice to say that all elements passed with flying colours and I easily made the transition from business suit to running kit and back inside and hour, this obviously also included the 5k run, lunch and a shower of course.

I would say I was feeling the effects of an early start and an early breakfast meeting on the run, but the times don't show that especially considering there was a hill in the middle of the run. Therefore I must conclude that the fitness levels are improving.

Also of note another milestone reached today as that is now 50 days of running. Here's to the next 315!

A thoughtful run

With Monday’s being notoriously busy in work I thought I might struggle to get out today. But upon my return home and the smell of a fabulous prawn curry beckoning, I steeled my reserve and got changed into my running kit straight away.

3 thoughtful miles later I am back at home and now warm and fed and writing tonight’s blog. I continue to be amazed at how a simple run can realign and prioritise all that is important.

So bags are backed and ready for an early start in  Gloucester and hopeful my first lunchtime run from our Gloucester office, I feel a new route coming on!

Finally thanks again to all my sponsors you have pushed me through the 2% target mark.

Keep on sharing

Pete Day 231 and 232 - A short and long one by Pljrun

Sunday club run with Martin and Peter. Peter left us at Muchelney because Martin wanted an 18 miler as prep for his Brighton Marathon, so ran off to Kingsbury, Burrow Hill, Curry, Drayton, Muchelney and back to Langport. Weather perfect for a Sunday morning run, springlike in places very enjoyable run.
Tried my smartphone with Garmin Fit app, worked great, logged a bit longer time wise (but I did start it earlier then the watch, and over 18 miles was only .12 different than the watch. So all in all pleased and happy to have an alternative to the Garmin watch, shall try it tomorrow at lunchtime as well.

Karen day 111 - 117

A bit of catch up as haven't posted for a while. Spent a few days in Surrey with my parents celebrating my dads birthday. Was looking forward to some nice long runs in different surroundings but the full agenda resulted in several short runs squeezed in each morning before the days activities ahead! The good news is some new trainers!! Yippee!! Brooks Ghosts - really comfy so far and Sweat Shop in   Woking delivered a great service - even gave 10% off just for asking! Trainers yet to be tested on a long run but will give me something to look forward to.

Day 111 http://app.strava.com/activities/41295022
An early morning run before work due to a quick turn around after work. Get home, have dinner, pack and drive to Surrey for a few days with family. Always notice how quiet it seems early in the morning before the rest of the town seem to get up! Does anyone else seem to struggle to be quiet when someone else in the house is still asleep? The quieter I try to be, the more noise I seem to make. Noise in the morning = grumpy husband!

Day 112 http://app.strava.com/activities/41295033
First day in Surrey after driving down last night. Nothing much planned for the morning other than catching up with family so had a bit of a lay in and then headed off for about 4 miles. Lots of changes to local houses and shops etc since my last visit which was interesting to see. Noticed how flat it was though and lots of traffic! The afternoon included a trip to Sweat Shop to get some new trainers. As part of the gait analysis and 'trainer fit' I had some personalised inner soles moulded. Was then told they would cost £45 extra so said thanks but no thanks to that one. Looking forward to tomorrows run.

Day 113 http://app.strava.com/activities/41295029
Off to London this morning catching an early train to Waterloo so got up early and headed out for a simple out and back. Great downhill start but of course uphill back! Lots of runners out which was nice to see! Been thinking all day about the inner soles and thought if I was using them every day it might be worth the investment. Went back to sweat shop to get another pair shaped and parted with my money - makes you wonder how much they actually cost if they fit a pair to every customer before actually trying to sell them. Anyway, when I got them home I wasn't happy with them as one feels completely different from the other which is a bit annoying . They have a 30 day money back guarantee so will give them a try and see how I get on.

Day 114 http://app.strava.com/activities/41295025
Last run in Surrey before heading home. Was starting work at 2pm and had a 2 hour drive ahead of me so got out first thing for the run before the drive back to Somerset. Headed down a lane I used to cycle down to get to school (talking a few years ago now!!). Remember a big hill that I used to hate, and either someone had flattened the hill or I have got a bit bigger! Funny how perceptions change as you grow up! Mind still not made up about the inner soles.....

Day 115 http://app.strava.com/activities/41295017
Bit late finishing work and had to stop at Morrison's on the way home so just ended up with just a short run as it was getting late and I was getting hungry! OK, the inner soles have to go. Have never had personalised inner soles before and never had any injuries or problems so think I will return them.

Day 116 http://app.strava.com/activities/41295013
Just a quick run after work - the weeks activities have caught up with me and I was a bit knackered - good pace for me though - must have just wanted to get it done! Ran without the special inner soles and much happier!

Day 117 http://app.strava.com/activities/41295012
Lovely sunny day today. Determined to blow the cobwebs off the road bike and enjoy the sun so went out with Matt this morning for about an hour and a half. Added the run on the end and Matt came out too. He suffered hamstring cramp at a premature turn around point so limped back whilst I added on a bit more to make the 30mins as planned. Loving the new trainers - have my times got quicker or is it just coincidence...???!!!

Jack: Day 241/365...NEW P.B.!!!

This morning I decided to head back to Parkrun with the guys from school and try my luck at a fast 5k. Having spent my week plodding along at a snails pace I was hopeful that my legs would be nice and fresh and so was aiming for a quick time. Last week I came in at 17:10 and so I was desperate to get back to pushing for a sub-17 min race. I felt as if I was taking the first kilometre pretty easy and so I was pleasantly surprised when my Garmin beeped to tell me that I had passed the 1km marker in 3 mins 19 secs. As I passed half way I was sitting in third place and I was aware of the fella in front of me getting closer. As I started to catch him I decided that I would try and take him before the finish. With a kilometre to go I had managed to claw it back to neck and neck and, as we approached the final downhill section, I put my foot down and pulled away. The last few hundred metres were horrific as I was chased towards the finish line however I managed to hold him off to take second place overall. As I crossed the line I allowed myself a glance at my watch and was chuffed to see that I had finished in 16:56 - A new p.b. Lovely!!

The results are in and its another V40 PB!

In addition to that I sneaked into the 2nd V40 slot, there must have been a lot of people on holiday this week. I also must admit to being a bit blurry eyed this morning and possibly a little aloof, as when I turned up to the race this morning I had everything required to complete the race bar my Garmin, Doh!

Fortunately the start isn't too far from home and I had time to back track and get there before everyone set off. The race was made mentally a little easier as the thick fog obscured the massive hill so it seemed to be over a lot quicker than usual.

After the finish and some eggs Benedict it was off to get my Macmillan T-shirt and Vest adorned with my text donate numbers. I will upload the photo's tomorrow after our 10 mile Sunday run, you have been warned.

A torn calf muscle, noooooooo! Well whilst this did happen on tonight's run, it wasn't my calf. My fellow running buddy Andy Smith has had a re-occurrence of an injury that he had been recovering from. Andy is an official pacer for the London and Berlin marathons and whilst his proposed pace group is well below his best running pace, this will set him back a few weeks if not more.

My run therefore was to offer all the support I could and on the way home a bit of a wind break for Andy to hide behind!

Is there quick way to post multiple runs? 7 miles on a Tuesday evening is not what I've been doing until I started my marathon training - bit of a shock to the system but enjoyed it.  Needed to do it though as it was on my plan but also because I ate a few too many choccies at work - well, if people will buy them!!  Also ran with a couple of pancakes in my tum as I did some pancake cooking for students at my school.  As it was straight from work, I had my rucksack which made it harder work.  All good fun.

Garmin Lesson 3 ignored!!! 5K eventually by Big Kev at Garmin Connect - Details

A double addition today as yesterdays events over took me, as did a flat battery on the Garmin!

Yesterday should have been a simple out and back, but due to insufficient forward planning on my part the Garmin battery couldn't take the pace and gave up just before the turning point. So being 1 1/2 miles away meant I still needed to run back without a record, the air was not only cold but blue as well! So, once indoors the Garmin was plugged in for the absolute minimum of time and I was back out, running up and down the road as I had no idea how long the battery would last. & laps of the street and the target is met.

Today was a much better, simpler and altogether nicer run. With the knowledge of Thai Green Curry for dinner, I was not going to hang around. Even after the exploits of the weekend the legs are still turning over and the times are falling, I mst be doing something right.

Just need to write the blog for the Club website and it will be time to curl up on the sofa.

My long run day. Woke up with a slight sore throat for the 4th day. So I decided to take it as easy I could. I just plugged through the miles and the hills. Didn't enjoy it much but glad I got this long run under my belt. Tomorrow night I will be doing the street 5 km race for the first time since my ICD shocked me in October. Needless to say despite the fact I've been doing lots of training since then I'm still a little nervous about the race but I have to do it to get over it. So stay tuned.

Sore Joints?

Is anyone else suffering with aching knees? I am a couple of hundred days into the challenge and have recentl upped my mileage in preparation for Edinburgh Marathon in May. Jack: Day 236-237/365...Sore knee!

These runs were very gentle as my left knee has started to ache. I fear it may have been caused by my recent increase in mileage. Yesterday's 12 miler was all on the pavement and so my knees will have taken a beating. For this reason I decided to give the Harriers a miss on Tuesday evening and went for a daytime jog around the park instead. I took this run very slowly and managed to keep about 80% of it on the grass. My knee was a little sore towards the end of the run and so I will just keep exercise to a minimum over the next few days before testing it over a longer distance again... Fingers crossed!

Jack: Day 235/365...Valentine's shopping!

Today was my last chance to pick up a valentine's present for Vicki before she came home from Aberdeen. I decided to make the 12mile round trip to Braehead Shopping Centre my run for the day! I was due a long run so this was a nice convenient way to kill two birds with one stone. The weather was not great and the snow was coming down pretty hard. Fortunately I was wrapped up in my nice GORE running top which I received for Christmas. I plugged in my ipod and strapped my bag to my back before heading out for a steady jog. The run was fine and I felt comfortable. Whilst it was snowing the ground was not in the least bit icy and it was not actually too cold. It came as a great shock then to suddenly be hurtling towards the ground as I seemingly forgot to put my foot down in front of me. It happened as I was running past ASDA  and a convenient queue of traffic. I glanced up at the sign to check my directions and the next thing I knew I was falling towards the ground. For some reason unknown to me I decided to commit to the fall and, rather than flailing about at the side of the road, I found myself diving into some sort of commando roll over my shoulder before pouncing back to my feet and continuing my run! I barely broke my stride! This earned me some bizarre looks from the stationary traffic and so I ended up chuckling to myself as I made a swift exit! I eventually made it to the shops in one piece, picked up the cuddly toy and made my way home with it safely in my bag! An eventful outing indeed!

Got in from work pretty late this evening so didnt really feel like the run. Only good thing was double glazing folk round the house so good excuse to escape for 20mins. Freezing cold & I wished I had taken my gloves. Head torch also playing up - not charging up. Need to get a grip & sort myself out. Usual boring old Knole Rd.

Met my running friend Helen, she hasn't run for about 4 months so was good to go out with her again. She only managed 2 miles but it's a start. Talking of doing an event together in the Autumn, either a half or full marathon :-)

Pete Day 223 to 225 - The long the short and the medium by Pljrun

Three runs to catch up on, Friday was my first long run of the year with a 22.5 mile run home from work. The weather was almost springlike in places. It did feel more like the time of year for about half an hour when there was a short shower but it soon changed back to sun and warmish out of the wind. There was still plenty of water around and when I got to Stathe I thought I would try the riverbank, mistake, it was like running on ice I could hardly keep my feet in places. So back to the road at Oath and then home to Langport.

Saturday saw me go for a standard three miles, I must admit my feet and legs where a bit sore (trainers have come to the end of their life, mind you over 1500 miles isn't bad). But I soon warmed and was into my stride.

Sunday was club run day and today was going to be an eleven miler for Sam who is attempting her first half next month. So seven of us set off in the rain around the levels to Upton, Somerton and back to Langport. Even keeping to the road we ended up ankle deep in very cold water, but feet soon warm up. Martin and I went a bit further to do 16 miles for his marathon training, even though it was raining it was nice running conditions.
So all in all a nice weekends running.

Karen Day 108-110

Day 108-109: Two days of minimum runs to fit in around other commitments. Had a really busy week and feeling tired so the running was a challenge, but hey, that's why is called the run 365 challenge!

Day 110: Today's run was more satisfying. Wanted to complete my longest run so far for my half marathon training and covered 9 miles. A really strong headwind and driving rain was getting the better of me around miles 5-8 but stuck with it and achieved what I set out to.  Now for a guilt free afternoon of telly watching and food - watching the rugby - come on England!!!!!

Cold & very wet morning. Met with 6 others from the running club for an 11ish miler. Really enjoyed it. Couple of muddy droves & a bit of knee deep freezing water to clean the shoes of in. Final mileage for the morning was 11.5m.  I accidently turned my GPS off on the watch 4.6m in which is a shame but Pete Jones can vouch that I did run the whole way. Still, at least the minimum 2m were clocked ok. :)

A fresh rainy morning running along by the river Avon was further enhanced by the numerous puddles to splash through. As when you trainers are wet, they are wet, so go for it and get muddy.

After the exertion of yesterdays Park Run, I was always going to take this easy. Its always good to look up and around at your surrounding now and then.

I have just signed up to the Great Western Runners towpath series. 4 x 10K and a final 5K

Sunday morning.  Normally do my long run on a Saturday but as my sister and pal were coming up to Bristol for a day in the city, decided to delay it.  When I left the house at 9am it was pouring with rain but geared up I left and actually didn't mind the rain, wind, puddles, mud and hills!!  Loved it (except last mile as I was cold and tired). But now feel great.  Love the long runs :)

40/365 Park Run by Big Kev

40/365 Park Run by Big Kev at Garmin Connect - Details

A great run this morning as we surprised Tina last night. With her not up to traveling down to see Katie in Canterbury, but also not admitting it. Katie and I we able to organise a train ticket for her to come home for the weekend. So after some late night banter an early start didn't look on the cards, but at 8:00am I was up and out.

Really glad I went in the end as a new PB in my age category 20:55!! also 3rd in that age group as well. Ashton Court Park run is something special as hilly doesn't do it justice! Thanks to everyone who organises and marshals it.

Looking forward to a nice evening in pizza, wine and a movie.

Jack: Day 234/365...Parkrun

This morning I made my way back down to Pollok Park for my weekly Parkrun 5k. After last weeks event was moved to an alternative route due to poor weather, I was keen to record a decent time. A few of the guys from work made it down again which was ace and definitely helps motivate me to get up and head to the park on a Saturday morning! At the start line I was standing next to a young lad in his club vest and overheard a clubmate of his asking him if he was going to win this won. The lad looked around at the competition and replied "Yea probably!". I was outraged and decided that I would be the one to knock this guy off of his pedestal. As the announcer started us off I found myself tearing along the initial straight at a much faster pace than I would normally. I was neck and neck with my rival for approximately 500m before I realised that, actually, I could  not sustain it. He disappeared into the distance and I sat back feeling sorry for myself. I finished the race in 5th position this week which was a little disappointing but my time of 17:11 was reassuring. I had been desperate to return to running sub-17 minutes but I think I am going to have to accept that, for now, it might not happen. The focus of my training recently has been for the Edinburgh Marathon at the end of May and, as I begin to place more emphasis on the longer distances, it would seem the shorter speed work is going to suffer slightly. I will keep trying however and maybe I will surprise myself one week.

Today's records include the short run to and from Parkrun (2km each way)

Jack: Day 229-233/365...More school days

This was another standard week of fitting in runs around going to work. I added a couple of extra kilometres to my standard Giffnock route in two of the outings to give me a slightly longer mileage for the week. I also used Tuesday as an opportunity for a tough hill session. This involved a dozen sprints up the steep hill at the end of the road with a gentle jog back down in between each rep. The hill was horrible but it is definitely a workout that I need to use more often.

39/365 Reverse Leigh Court 5K by Big Kev at Garmin Connect - Details

After working through lunch I thought I would sneak out before it got dark tonight as I still have some work things left to do. Not certain that was a good choice as feeling rather lethargic today and I don't know why, but the reverse loop seem so much harder, go figure!

Up side is that I should be in Canterbury with Katie tomorrow, so some new routes coming up.
