151/365 5 Months of running and Summers arrived, 7 miles by Big Kev

151/365 5 months of running and Summers arrived, 7 miles by Big Kev

With the weather forecasters talking about summer arriving today and temperatures reaching 20 degrees C, I thought an earlier rather than later run would be better choice, oh how true!

By the time I had set off at 8:37 it was already 14 degrees and climbing, I had planned to do just 3 miles, but then I realised that today is the end of May and to keep the average mileage up I need to complete 7 miles. To reiterate I do not find it a struggle running that sort of distance when I have the kind of trails and scenery Bristol has to offer on my doorstep.

Today's route started from home and lead me past St Katherines school and into Ham Green, past the lake and onto the towpath that flanks the river Avon which leads into Bristol. The tide was coming in and the shade of the trees kept it cool on the trail. After a glance of the watch to confirm I had reached the required distance I turned, just by the old firing range and then head back to the track that leads to the Paradise Bottom spring (affectionately known as heart attack hill). Once at the top and I have turned right I am then heading for home and along Leigh Court's driveway. Finally one lap of my road and I have covered the required 7 miles, lovely.

So, May is finished and I have been running for 5 months! For the statisticians amongst you the figures stack up as follows:

Miles; 137.21, Elapsed time;16:53:58, Ave Pace; 7:23/Mile, Calories; 21680. This is very similar to April, but with some notable PB's along the way.

Here's to the remaining 7 months.

150/365 A little more slippery than expected. by Big Kev

150/365 A little more slippery than expected. by Big Kev

Another mini milestone today and 150 consecutive days of running, how quickly the year is flying past.

With the exploits of yesterday over, it was a loop of Abbots Pool that grabbed my attention today, but not my thoughts on footwear. I was out of the door and on the road with my Mizuno flats on without out a care until I turned onto the first trail. I had somehow completely ignored all of the rain over the last few days and the impact this would have on the conditions under foot!

Fortunately after some very sideways moments I reached the end of the trail and headed back towards home only to then enter the path into Abbots Pool that resembled more of a mud bath, than a path. Safe to say the bright orange shoe are a little less bright after the run today.

Also and a little surprisingly the legs were full of running today and whilst I will be a little down on the monthly mileage by the end of tomorrow, May has been a month full of very special moments.

149/365 Earthquake, Caernarfon castle and Snowdon by Big Kev

149/365 Earthquake, Caernarfon castle and Snowdon by Big Kev

At no point on the run365challenge did I expect to live through an earthquake! At 4:15am Caernarfon was struck by an earthquake of 3.8 on the Richter scale, Tina Jess and I had been staying over ready to climb Snowdon that morning. The quake only last 10-15 seconds or so, but was enough to wake all 3 of us and for Jess's bed to move away from the wall. What an experience!

Following a little more broken sleep, I headed outside to do my 5k in a force 8 gale! The omens are not looking good for the climb later today. However, not being total put off I head out along the harbor and across the river to run parallel to the Menai Straight, with camera in hand I took my time (the wind made sure of this) and grabed a few shoots. After a shower and a quick breakfast we are then off to Snowdon to see what else the elements can throw at us.

With a spot in the car park found at the Rangers Station, our route is planned, our bags are packed and the sun is shinning. The route we have chosen is an 8 mile out and back track that we had been told was the prettiest. The first 2 and a bit miles get you to the base of Snowdon, but are a real climb on their own. With some honesty swapped between us and a couple of cookies, we head up the step ascent and take our time and enjoy the views. 3:10 from setting off from the car park we reach the summit and have smiles all round. To top this off the clouds part, if only fleetingly, to allow for some amazing photo's. Within minutes the weather has changed and the temperature dropped (we were prepared of course), so we decided to descend. Only on the descent can you appreciated the severity/steepness of the climb. Also downhill is a lot faster (gravity really works) 2:20. An amazing day all told, now just the 4 hour drive home!

Thanks girls what a great couple of days, what will tomorrow bring.

Nicky: Day 290 10k club monthly medal

Garmin Connect - Langport 10k

3 days post Edinburgh Marathon & I had to do my 2mile minimum anyway. Club night & also our 10k monthly medal - a club runners only race of the Battle of Sedgemoor 10k circuit. I think its towards winning points for our annual club championship competition.  In true Nicky style, I thought why not!  Put in a nice slow time on these tired legs & I can only improve over the summer monthly medal competitions.
Headed out feeling absolutly fine. Had left my Garmin at home in the rush to get out the door so had no idea of my speed - just ran as I felt!  Bit tired on the last 2 miles with aching calves but absolutely amazed myself with a bang on 48 min 10k. This is the fastest I have ever run this distance. I am now telling myself that I probably didnt push myself hard enough in Edinburgh and maybe could have done an even better time up there. I should not have been able to run a 10k PB 3 days post a marathon.
Quite delighted though. As I have had to create this run (due to Garmin being at home) Pete Jones from the challenge will verify my distance and time as he was the time keeper on the run!  Thanks Pete.

Day 317-324 by Sallycinn

Edinburgh Marathon - wow - what an amazing weekend.  This has to be one of the best weekends of my life.  Loved the city, the people, the pasta dinner with Nicky, Sue and Charles (any my parents and Michelle), the actual marathon itself and definitely the post mara refreshments!  Still quite overwhelmed with it all!  Can't wait for the next one. :)

The day finally arrives. I'm with my mum and dad and they walked down to the start with me which is only 10 mins away.  It was such a great atmosphere I felt quite emotional and even shed a tear!!  I know, but it's an emotional moment just before setting off on a run I have trained for, for over 4 months.  You'll see that my log is only for 22 miles - phone died.  I think it's because I used it for music after mile 10.  I wanted to save it for around 22 miles (Nicky's advice) but it started getting hard early on probably due to the heat so I plugged in and unfortunately used up all the juice!
Anyway, my miles got a bit slower from mile 22 onwards and I came in at 5 hours 48 secs.  A PB of around 14 minutes. With hindsight I would have gone off a little slower and do a negative split.  But hindsight is a wonderful thing.  Roll on the next one! But loved every single moment - even the last 4 miles!!

148/365 Out in the morning rain by Big Kev

A lovely way to start the day today, there is something so invigorating about running in the rain when it is warm. The route this morning was still being dictated by the niggles in the left hamstring, so just a simple out and back route to Ashton Court from home.

With a week off from work, today is about planning our adventures to come, so watch out for some pics over the coming days.

Another big shout out to Nic Oughton for the mention in the weekly coaching email (I hope the knee is mending well).

Jack: Day 341/365...Post-Marathon Aches!

This morning was a scary one... I rolled out of bed with aching muscles and a sore foot after yesterday's marathon! The prospect of running 5km was not a pleasant one. Fortunately my brother and dad were here to help me out. They ran with me and kept me company as I struggled around Queen's Park. The 5km took me about 31minutes and was a real struggle. My legs didn't feel as bad as I was expecting but my foot was really sore! An afternoon resting it in front of the tv was in order.

Today I had the incredible pleasure of watching Crystal Palace win the play-off final against Watford with most of the family! It still has not quite sunk in that we are a Premier League team again! A great way to end the weekend!

Jack: Day 340/365...Edinburgh Marathon!

Today was the big one. After 339 days of continuous running, this was the big one. My return to Edinburgh after four years of waiting. In 2009 I collapsed a few hundred yards short of the finish line. I had been pushing for a sub 3hr marathon but, unfortunately, I had pushed too hard. This year I was desperate to put that failure to rest. My training had been pretty good but I was very concerned about my foot. I have been able to do my daily 5k's but the ache has been pretty consistent. I couldn't help but worry that it would deteriorate over the miles. My preparation was good and my brothers and Ellie were up to support, along with my parents and Vicki. We had an awesome pasta dinner together on Saturday night and then I made my way to Doug's flat to spend the night there. A good night's sleep followed and I awoke raring to go. I knew that I wanted to be at the start line early and so I made my way there for 8:30...The race started at 9:50. Having said goodbye to my support crew I took some time to contemplate the challenge ahead and get myself focused.

When the gun was fired I eased away and made a real effort not to get caught up in the fast early pace. My target was to average 6:45 minute miles for the first half and then try to push on slightly in the second. My first couple of miles were a little fast although I felt incredibly easy and really did make an effort to slow down! At 10 miles I was about a minute ahead of target and I spotted my family in the crowd. I felt as fresh as a daisy and this was boosted by the incredible cheer that I received. I passed half way in 1hr 26mins 58secs and felt very comfortable. I began to gain confidence in my ability to achieve sub 3hrs although I was still terrified that my foot could pack in at any minute.
By 16 miles I was starting to slow down. I could see the seconds slipping by on my Garmin and Ii could feel my legs slowing. Each step was becoming more laboured and I wondered whether I had become too confident too soon. I necked an energy gel sachet and the last of my lucozade in an attempt to get some energy to my legs. Whether it was the carbs or purely placebo, something clicked and by 18miles I felt fresh again. I knew I was going to be ok and I was confident that 3 hours was in my grasp. As I passed 20miles I felt incredible. This was by far the best that I have ever felt during a race. I knew that I was going to smash my target and I felt confident enough to pick up the pace.  I spotted a few familiar faces passing the other way and then got a boost as I saw Kenny at about 24 and my dad at the 25 mile marks. Coming into the final straight I was able to sprint ahead and I overtook another runner with yards to spare! A fantastic roar greeted me from the crowd as I passed under the finish banner in 2hrs 53mins 38secs. I am a happy man!

Jack: Day 338-339/365...Family time!

Day 338 saw me complete a fairly standard 5km jog with nothing too exciting to report.

Day 339 was an exciting Saturday however as I had the pleasure of my mum and dad's company in Glasgow! The parents arrived on Thursday evening and so, on Saturday morning, they decided to join me at Parkrun. As it was the day before my marathon I did not want to run a quick 5km and so  Vicki decided that this would be the ideal opportunity for her to get involved. She has been doing a bit of running recently in her fitness kick and so wanted to join me for a run. She set herself  the target of completing the course in under 30minutes and, spurred on with the incentive of a present if she succeeded, she managed to complete the run in 29 minutes and 39 seconds. A fantastic effort! I ran with Vicki and so crossed the line just after her. This set me up nicely for a relaxing day wandering around Glasgow and getting my head around tomorrow's marathon! My dad completed parkrun in 23.19 and mum finished in 27:00. A good effort all round!

Nicky: Day 285 Edinburgh Marathon

Nicky: Day 285 Edinburgh Marathon PB by Nicky.C at Garmin Connect - Details

Was really hoping to beat my previous marathon PB set in Brighton about 6 weeks ago. Brighton was 3:57. Felt a bit heavy legged on the start line & by mile 6 was still not feeling settled. I had already stopped twice for the loo by mile 9 wasting 2 mins & 5 seconds. My pace was pretty steady though at 8:49 min miling.  Felt no worse by mile 18 altho was a bit peeved that at the marathon registration I was told that lucozade sports drinks were going to be distributed on the course. No such luck - water & hi5 gels only. I dont do gels. Luckily I had some glucose tabs in my bum bag for energy & a few of the sports blok sweetie thingies!
Totally delighted with a 3:53:19 pb which included the loo stops & a garmin mileage measure of 26.34!! One set of loos I used were a bit off course hence the added mileage! Big grins all around.
It was also great to have dinner with Charles & Sally from this challenge the evening before!!

147/365 A driver of distinction on my 5K. by Big Kev

147/365 A driver of distinction on my 5K. by Big Kev

After a restless evening yesterday I really did take it easy today while out running through Leigh Woods. With a slow warm up and some extra stretches thrown in for caution, I can report that while the hamstring is still very tight, it hasn't gone snap! So onward, ever onward.

The process of running outside every day still throws up its peculiarities and today was no exception. Whilst ascending the driveway from the main car park in Leigh Wood to the A369, my eyes were drawn to the driver of a car slowly passing me going up towards the A369. This in itself is not too uncommon and most drivers are kind enough to give me a wide berth (its Big Kev after all). This was again being observed, but to my surprise it was not just the driver peering back at me as I raise my hand with thanks. No, on this occasion I am also acknowledged by a nodding full grown bright red Macaw Parrot! It was enough to put me off my stride and to do a double take in disbelief. The Parrot was as tame as tame could be and was sat quite comfortably half way up the drivers seat belt. Questions need to be asked I hear you cry. The driver is about to head onto a busy main road, surely this is not safe and various other Health ans Safety question. Well we reach the top of the driveway at just about the same time and the driver pulls over and again as calm as calm can be, places the Macaw on a perch on the passenger seat. With another wave of acknowledgement I pass them and we proceed in different directions, whilst in total this encounter could not have been much more than 2 minutes in total, I smile all the way home and forget the painful hamstring for a little while longer.

It's great to be outside, what will tomorrow bring.

Charles: Day 146/365 - A disappointing run in the Edinburgh Marathon

Edinburgh Marathon
I was so looking forward to this event as it was my first marathon and my training had been going really well up until about 3 weeks ago when I had a bad 20 mile training run and it was okay again after that.

On the morning of the run I was really 'Up for it' but I got to just before the half way point and died. All the energy sapped from my legs and they felt dead. When I tried running again I had nothing in the tank so I had to slow jog and walk the rest. I had set myself a time of 4:30 but in the end I did a very disappointing 5:26. I can go over and over things in my head to try and work out what went wrong but I have no absolutely idea what happened. The one thing I do know is that I won't be relying entirely on energy gels to get me through the next marathon. I will be taking something solid to munch on the way round and it won't be jelly babies or jelly beans, I think bananas might be a better option to replace some of the electrolytes and potassium I lose.

I am totally gutted and disappointed with myself because I know a 4:30 is well within my capabilities. I am currently considering withdrawing from this challenge to allow me to concentrate on my Dopey Challenge in January 2014 (www.rundisney.com/disneyworld-marathon/). I have a lot of hard thinking to do over the next few days and weeks but will keep you all posted.

146/365 Definitely a recover run, 5K by Big Kev

146/365 Definitely a recover run, 5K by Big Kev

Following the exploits of yesterdays run, todays run was always going to be a recovery one. Within 300m it was apparent that the effort left on the trails had also left a mark on my left hamstring, ouch!

A slow descent and with the hope that it had warmed and stretched the hamstring enough I tried to increase the pace a little. So, that will be no then, ouch, ouch, ouchy. Those are the exact word I used, honest.

Right, focus is required as I now need to get back up the hill and in one peace please. OK done, but I am not in the best of condition, I believe beer is the only solution, or is it RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression Elevate), no its beer.

Lets see what a good night sleep brings.

On final shout out today to Jamie Richards who completed the 100k London to Brighton challenge, awesome effort.

145/365 Trail Blazer 10K for Macmillan PB! by Big Kev

145/365 Trail Blazer 10K for Macmillan PB! by Big Kev

How does this keep happening? Another day on the challenge and another new all time PB. The final results of all the waves are now in and the times have been confirmed. I have a new 10K PB of 38:45, further still I actually came in 12th overall (6th over the finish line in my wave)!  This challenge has definitely brought the best out of me physically. I couldn't have imagined running this fast and this strong, this time last year. With all of the injury problems I had faced in 2012 while running I was at the point of giving up for good, I am really glad i didn't!

The start of the day was perfect, following the excellent night before (Curry and Guinness). We moved around the house with purpose and were packed and ready well ahead of schedule, good job. Knowing that we needed to put petrol in the car brought about an early stop on our journey. At the point of me putting the nozzle into the tank I notice with horror the lack of Garmin watch attached to my wrist! Yeah, it was safe and secure on my bedside cabinet some 15 miles away, to make it worse the motorway we had just traveled up was at a standstill in the opposite direction. Therefore a cross town trip was needed and fortunately the traffic was kind and didn't put the race start out of the question. The girls though took it in their stride and we continued to laugh along the way.

With 15 minutes to spare the race band is around my wrist, the race chip is attached to my shoe and my race number is on my shirt. We then enter the runners area and spy the Macmillan tent. We are made to feel very welcome and I am told that the blog is well read by Macmillan. Before we know it the girls have their supports shirts on and various things to wave and make noise with and I am off to the start.

Trails I just love them, with 3K downhill to start with and a fallen tree to hurdle I find myself 3rd, something is wrong. The wrong part, is I need to get a grip and pace myself, this is 10K and not my usual 5K Parkrun. The next 4K was mostly uphill, but I passed the 5K mark well ahead of schedule. A sharp turn at 8K heads us all back toward home and I am now 5th, but fading. With 500m to go one more runner comes past, but I am not able to stay with him. That's OK as the rapturous cheers from the girls and the crowd (I am the first Macmillan runner across the line) brought me to my new PB.

Thanks girls, its been a great day.

144/365 It's finally Friday, 3 Mile lunchtime run by Big Kev

An easy subject matter to cover today, its Friday at last! I have been on the go since 7:00 am and really needed a lunchtime run to clear the head. The prospect of rain coupled with the strong winds meant that a run around the woods was the best option. 3 miles done and its now time to package up the work for next week. After a very hectic year my week off has finally arrived and I hope that the body doesn't go into melt down with all the rest and relaxation I lined up for it.

I might have to add in a couple of crazy things to keep it occupied of course, so watch this space.

A big shout out to all those running the Forest of Dean Macmillan 10K with me tomorrow and also to Jamie Richards who is running the London to Brighton 100K (Wow).

143/365 Copycat Thursday 4 miles home by Big Kev

Well that was a spooky run, it was like I had rewound the clock by 7 days. The route and the conditions were almost exactly the same as last Thursday. Storm clouds all around me and even visible signs of rain in the distance, but luckily not on me!

The legs were fine following yesterdays longer run, but I still wasn't inclined to muster up the effort to join the Tyntesfield 10K tonight. I hope that everyone had a great race tonight as I could see the rain falling very close to the race site.

Jack: Day 332-337/365...Slow and steady.

This week was all about the taper. With the Edinburgh Marathon first approaching it was important for me to get a good recovery in. Under normal circumstances I may have taken a few days off this week however this challenge obviously forbade this. For this reason I completed a short 5 kilometre run each day at a nice easy pace. My foot has been pretty sore all week although the exercises which I have been doing seem to have helped. I managed to grab some insoles from  Rob at work and these have also made my work shoes less painful.

My mum and dad are coming to visit this evening and may be joining me on my run tomorrow. It will be nice to have some company again and a good opportunity to show them some more of Glasgow. Not long now!!

What great night for a run, not too hot or windy and with the choice of routes at our disposal we knew it was going to be a good one. As an alternative to our normal 10 mile route we though we would plump for the 9 mile route incorporating the towpath from Cumberland basin to the far end of Leigh woods. Once we had navigated Durdham Downs and Bridge Valley road we could spy the towpath, now there had already been murmurs that someone wanted a blast along the towpath (no names mentioned, Paul) and knowing that another in the group is still super keen to continue with his improving PB record (no names, Marcus). It was with great delight and a little rye smile that I watched them disappear into the distance and note that the level of conversation was dropping dramatically as the speed increased, a sure sign they were working hard. Now, I myself could be accused of entering into more than my fair share of competitive bravado, however knowing that we are only 3 miles in and after the sprint along the towpath we would only be half way, I thought better of it. This was further brought home to the 2 runners (no names , Paul and Marcus) as after all that effort had been expelled, they seemed to have forgotten that at the end of the towpath the only way to get back to the club is to run uphill! To add to their peril it was then further agreed (by them I might add) that we would take the Garlic valley route back adding another mile or so to the route, ah the benefit of hindsight and the 365 challenge!

Both of the runners in question are running particularly well and it would be unfair of me to mock them out of hand, especially as they are both more than capable of showing me a clean pair of heels. The challenge though has taught me that its not just about the sprint or even the marathon, its about all of it. The time spent outside with friends , the time on my own finding new trails, the rain, the sun and even the snow. I have been fortunate to get this far pretty much unscathed which is why I can let the runners with no name have their fun as its all part of the adventure and I am reminded that I still have 223 day of enjoyment to go.

Days 312-316 by Sallycinn

A few runs to catch up on.  Nothing wildly exciting but keeping it going - nearly there. Can't believe I've kept it going for all this time.  I think it'll be one of my biggest achievements yet.  Having said that, I have never had to run the day after a marathon ... so that will be a real test! :)

just a mile run to get a lift to the pilates class. It was a double class for me and a damn good work out/

Goodbye everybody

I have decided to quit the challenge and after 138 days it was a difficult decision for me. This is the first goal that I have given up on in a very long time - but the "have to" part of this is killing the love for running - I had stopped looking forward to my runs. In addition to that they needed to be so short so that I could recover for the next day - enjoy going 3-5 miles in a single run and I was averaging 10 miles a week on the challenge - more was too much for my legs without rest. So I actually will be running more now that I have dropped this. Also, I have but one time a day that I can exercise and I used to cross train with weights and riding a bicycle - I haven't been able to do the lifting and biking - I look forward to that.

I wish all of you the best of luck and I hope that you stay free from injury.

141/365 5K on a glorious summers evening by Big Kev

141/365 5K on a glorious summers evening by Big Kev

After a wonderful day at work, catching up and forward planning I had an excellent journey home (for a change) which lined up this evenings run nicely.

After a quick change and with the temperature just right, it was an easy choice of routes tonight, the Garlic Valley route. After heading down the Leigh Court driveway I bear off the road just after the car park and head down the incline known as Garlic Valley. Now the blossom has gone the aroma has diminished, but not the beauty, or the requirement to make sure you know where you are placing your feet! At the bottom I turn under the railway bridge and I am now alongside the river on the towpath. Half a mile later I turn right and head back up the opposite side of the valley and into the equally beautiful area known as Paradise Bottom. Finally another right turn and a mile later I am back at home.

Now if I knew the running was going to be this hard, I would have started the challenge a long time ago!!!!

With the club run tomorrow night, I think the Summer 9 along the towpath might be in order.

Finally a big thank you to my new sponsors who helped me out on my just giving site yesterday.

Felt good, especially on the hills which was where I tended to pick off other runners. This was my first outing of running in shorts & vest this year so far & I glad thats all I wore as I got so hot. Chuffed to bits with a finish time of 50:45! Not bad for an old lady!! Only a week til the marathon so will try take it easy for the next 7 days.

140/365 Another day in and another year older! by Big Kev

As someone far wiser than me has said, "Statistics have proven that those who have the most birthdays live the longest". So chalk another birthday up for Kev!

Thank you to all my friends and family for the kind wishes and as a reminder, yes I will be running on my birthday and yours! Funnily enough, as I am running everyday for a whole year that will include your birthday as well. Oh how quickly people forget a whole year means a whole year, all 365 days of it (clues in the title of the challenge)!

Now before you all rush out to by me that belated birthday card or even an expensive birthday present (there is always hoping). Could I ask that rather than doing that, you consider donating to Macmillan on my behalf. The sponsorship page which is always at the bottom of every blog entry, had slowed up a little in April and has ground to a halt in May. Therefore if you could either check out the link directly or even consider text donating it would be very much appreciated. Its surprising how quickly the pounds start to add up again if we all start having a go.

To text donate, text BKEV99  and the amount (e.g. £1.00 or even £10.00) to 70070 and that way it will bolster the total immediately. If you have already been kind enough to dig deep and a lot of you have, could you try something different and share my link or even ask your friends and family to follow my blog, or facebook profile. I can then keep them amused on this journey and they might even consider sponsoring me as well.

139/365 Sunday breakfast, lunch and run! by Big Kev

139/365 Sunday breakfast, lunch and run! by Big Kev

After a fantastic evening of drinks and chatter not to mention a very late finish, it was topped off superbly by the overdue return of our AWOL cat, who was fortunately none the worse for wear.

However the repercussion of the previous nights excesses and lack of sleep were felt at breakfast, lunch and the run. Breakfast was a shared affair with those how stayed over last night and was taken at a very slow pace. Lunch was for immediate family at the Dovecote pub (Birthday treat for tomorrow) and was enjoyed immensely and at a very slow pace. Finally today's run in the glorious sunshine was, yes you have guessed it, at a very slow pace!

On the upside though the run from our house to the bottom of Ashton Court is mostly down hill and did at least give me the chance to run on auto pilot. I do believe that it is now time for a perfect power nap before dinner! Thanks for making this weekend a great one girls, love you.

138/365 Park Run celebrations by Big Kev

138/365 Park Run celebrations by Big Kev

Following yesterday's turn of events today's run was also going to be an early (ish) one. The appointment at the car body shop was at 11:00 and on the other side of Bristol. So the plan was to run early, get the quote organised and then the rest of the day was for me! It is my Birthday on Monday and Tina and the girls had organised for a few friends and family to come over for drinks and a catch up. Therefore at 8:40am when I rolled out of bed I really didn't expect to be on the start line for Park Run by 9:00 am, as Ron Burgundy said, 'that escalated quickly!'

I had always planned to go, but a little more preparation is normally required. It was a Park Run of celebrations as Alan was due to run his 100th park run and conditions looked good for some PB's (other peoples I might add). Today's start line banter which is normally always about (for most people) lining up the excuses for why this run won't be a PB or will be a gentle jog because of extenuating circumstances, injuries or an increased level of 'can't be arsedness'. So my apologies (again) have to go out to Marcus, for saying all that I say, about not running hard, you will be well ahead of me today, blah, blah, blah and then ignoring everything I had said and go out all guns blazing. Upside though, another sub 20:00 for me and a top 10 finish (9th), a new PB for Marcus and Alan completing the run and therefore entering the elite 100 club. I am sure there were many more triumphant stories from the days run and I would encourage everyone to create their own, by signing up to this great running community. we are very lucky to have this in Bristol, a big thanks to Geoff and all the team.

Lets see how tonight affects tomorrows run!

137/365 A car crash of a day, quite literally by Big Kev

137/365 A car crash of a day, quite literally by Big Kev

With the end of the working week (for most) upon us I had a hectic schedule to fit in, so a run before work was always going to be the right choice. Following the subsequent events of the day it turned out to be a very good choice indeed.

The run itself is along side one of the main commuter routes into Bristol and as a consequence the traffic noise is quite loud. I therefore run with some music on to really just drown out the traffic. The sun was out the music was fast paced and the day ahead looked like being a good one. The working day was indeed a good one, very productive and one that allowed for a bit of forward planning as well.

The productive run of events soon stopped though, right at the point when I received a call from Tina to say she had been in a car accident! Through no fault of her own, another driver had decided to crash into the back of her car whilst she was stationary in a queue of traffic! There weren't any physical injures thankfully and all the bits of plastic and metal that are meant to bend and break did their jobs. However, the violation of someone else destroying your belongings does mean that emotions are high. Tina is one of the calmest people I have every known, so to see her so irate is unusual. Fortunately a few phone calls later and after some cajoling of the bent car parts, meant that Tina's car could at least be driven and we were even able to organise the inevitable repair quotes for Saturday Morning.

How quickly events can change in a matter of moments!

Charles: Day 130 to 138/365 - Playing Catchup

Been on holiday in Blackpool for the week so playing catchup.

I found out there was a 10k race on the Sunday (Day 132) and I had a 12 mile run to do so I ran 7.8k to the start to register for the race then did another 2.3k after I registered. I then did the 10k race in 53 mins so well pleased with that considering I've got a really sore knee at the moment.

This coming week is going to be mainly consist of the minimum distance of 3k as I do believe I'm running a marathon next week.

Looking forward to meeting Nicky and Sally so I better get the restaurant booked :)

Jack: Day 331/365...Running with the fellas from work.

Today was the sports development day at school. This was a chance for all pupils to play a variety of sports over the course of the day instead of their usual lessons. I spent my day supervising 'Ultimate Frisbee' and Basketball and it was a huge success. After school I popped out for a gentle run with the rest of the guys who are racing next week. We did a steady 10km run and discussed plans for race day and nutrition strategies! It's getting very close now and I cannot wait for Marathon weekend. Foot was a bit sore but nothing too serious. Just hoping it doesn't get any worse!

136/365 Redland to home dodging the cloud bursts! by Big Kev

136/365 Redland to home dodging the cloud bursts! by Big Kev

What an eventful 4 mile run home from Redland! I had been watching the clouds build and not really move in any direction, for the last hour and when I finally ventured out with Tina we drove through rain, then sun, then rain and back to sun. So my task was simple, dodge the rain where possible! Well the sky line was breathe taking especially with the sun dropping and lighting up the clouds. Well I did accomplish my task as I seemed to be moving at the same speed and direction as the clouds, so how cool, I had my own piece of sunshine following me all the way home. Good job as I didn't really want to soak the new shoes on their 3rd run!

Further good news today as my Asics Nimbus turned up at Easy Runner and I was able to collect them at lunchtime as I was heading back through Bristol after a meeting. Even though the new Mizuno's are super lightweight, I do wonder how well they would fair over the longer distances to come, especially the Welsh Castles Relay and Cotswold Way relay?

Bring on the recceing, whoop whoop!

135/365 GWR Summer 6 mile group by Big Kev

Well it's Wednesday again and it was another lovely evening spent in the company of friends on the summer 6 mile route. Tonight we were joined by some new recruits to the club and Bristol in general, so they were all pleasantly surprised by the number of historic landmarks that can be covered in 3 miles out and 3 miles back to the club. The weather turned out for the better after all the wetness of yesterday, so the views from the top of Ashton Court across to Bath we spectacularly clear.

In catching up with friends, it was great to have Ian back running after his issues with shin splints and also to have the time to catch up with Emma following her mammoth achievement on the Exmoor coastal trail marathon. So to hear the news that Nick has finally got his knee op date (next Friday) topped off a good evening.

That said, Katie had decided that it was her turn to buy take out (feeling flush from all the tips) and I had been tasked with getting it, so no food and drink at the club tonight. Instead I had a smiley happy family on the door step welcoming me back home from the Chinese take out! A night of giggles then ensued and all too quickly another day is over. Where has the week gone already.

133/365 5K around the woods by Big Kev

After the normal Monday craziness, it was nice to get out in the woods and away from the constant technology based interruptions of the day. The run itself was a little on the gentle side, as the calves were a little tight following the new shoes experience of yesterday. However, not so gentle as to avoid the mud and puddles!

Part of the trail, known to many as 'Garlic Valley' was full of bloom and the smell of wild garlic on both sides. A great distraction from the steepness of the down slope, especially knowing I had the wrong shoes on (road shoes) for the terrain. An excellent way to spend 23 minutes!

132/365 A new shoes day by Big Kev

132/365 A new shoes day by Big Kev

Well after 132 days and on a rotation of three pairs of road shoes and one pair of trail shoes, today was the day for a change. After a couple runs over the last few weeks it was apparent that 2 pairs of the road shoes were well beyond their best. I had been hoping that they would last until my birthday, however with no days off on this challenge, the shoes as you can understand are a very important piece of kit and had to be replaced.

Therefore a journey to Easy Runner was on the cards and I was happy to catch up with Rich, who was working today to catch up on some paperwork, amongst other things. As is customary with a shoe fitting session it involves lots of boxes with the new and shinny inside and a fair amount of shoe swapping. However, today also through up a surprise I didn't expect.

After checking the wear on what is left of my Asics Nimbus, it was noticeable that I have moved from a firm heel strike, to a midfoot strike. Rich therefore suggested I try (more for the hell of it, I think) a transition shoe. Those who know me well understand that at 6'4" and 14 stone +, I am sceptical when it comes to the neutral running camp. Well, it appears I need to eat some humble pie!

Rich immediately provided me with what he thought was his best choice and absolutely nailed it. After many different pairs because of my indecision, I conceded and I am now the happy owner of some Mizuno EVO-cursoris. Go figure!!!!

The 3 miles home from the Downs were therefore a very new experience, even if the route is very familiar. Once home and a quick check over I find that I have no injuries and I had not lost any time at all, lets see what the coming weeks and months bring. Thanks Rich and Easy Runner.

Angie - Day 132 - 3.1 mile - Helme and back

Good run considering I had a late night and a few drinks. Busy week so think there will be a few minimum distances again. Never mind, happy that I get the chance to do longer runs at the weekend. 150 days next milestone :-).

Yay longest run of the year so far. Was wet and windy but enjoyed it. Bit slower than last week but given the conditions ok. Can enjoy Italian and a few drinks tonight now :-).

Popped out after finishing some paperwork. Bone dry when I left - one mile in the heavens opened & I got totally drenched - not wearing my proper rain jacket either. SOAKED to the skin! Yuk!

Had planned a slow 20 miler as my last long run pre-Edinburgh. Nice steady pace & really enjoyed the run but got very cold. Decided to miss off one loop & head home. Clocked it at 18.5m so not too bad really.

Day 4 Run 365 by louisept4u at Garmin Connect - Details

This one was tagged on at the end of the day as part of my running group.  So no pictures today, I worked with my newbies tonight which resulted in much slower time.  But always great to support new folks to running, helping them to blow their own expectations out of the water :)  Always worth it!

Awful weather after yesterday (Tuesday) I held off until at night and it turned out I got the best weather of the day.  Felt so strong doing this run and really focused on maintaining my technique all the way.  All this concentrating on technique however is slowing me down but with the added bonus of no hip/groin pain!

This was a squeeze today, working 14 hours today but it made me think about how to get that run but it was a great day and managed to squeeze one in before class.  I even made a wee friend enroute.

Jack: Day 325/365...A New P.B.!

As I glanced out of my window this morning I was hugely disappointed to see that it was pouring with rain. The sole of my foot was particularly sore and I came very close to crawling back into bed to put off my 5km run until the evening. I knew however that some of the CrossFit lads were heading down to parkrun and I had told them that I would be there. I laced up my shoes and jogged down to Pollok Park. When I arrived I managed to find the other lads and very soon I was lined up on the start line. I went off pretty hard and tucked into second place. After the first kilometre I was running at a sub 17 minute pace. I felt good and as I hit the downhill I decided to kick on. I pulled away from the pack and opened up a good lead. From here it was just a case of hanging on. I powered up the first hill and then again picked up the pace on the downhill. As I hit the third kilometre I realised that I could not see the rest of the field behind me. I was terrified that someone would catch me at any minute and so I held on for dear life and just hoped that it would be enough. I crossed the line in 16:47. This was a huge new p.b. for me and my first ever 1st place finish at a parkrun event! Well chuffed!

131/365 2 countries 1 run. love it by Big Kev

131/365 2 countries 1 run. love it by Big Kev

Today was a first for me, I had an errand to run in Wales with Tina and on the return it obviously made sense to run across the Severn Bridge (of course). The Bridge is about 2 miles long, so by the time I got dropped off in Chepstow and finally arrived at the Aust service station, 4 lovely and very different miles had been covered.

Following the excesses of yesterday, it was never going to be a quick run, but with the views on offer it didn't need to be.
