181/365 Recovery 5K, hmmmm by Big Kev at Garmin
Tired is the only way to explain todays run, tired when I got up, tired while running and tired when I finished. The route was a simple out and back to Ham Green and the Penny Brohn centre, which normally makes me happy as the first half is down hill, but not today. Also the blister I picked up from yesterday didn't seem to trouble me too much, so I am hoping I have got away with it.
Considering the effort put in yesterday I am not overly surprised by the tiredness, but I do hope I can shift it as I have a lot on today. Priorities though are now going to be given to the consumption of calories in the most gratifying way (I didn't say nutritionally you might note). Full English breakfast, right down to the black pudding, get in!
Right time to focus on the family and thank them for working with me in the crazy month of June. That's a lot of races and PB's, I think I might slow it down a bit for July, maybe!
As they say tomorrow's another day, well in fact tomorrow's a big day, I will be half way.

180/365 Leg 4 Cotswold Relay, 12miles oh dear by Big Kev
180/365 Leg 4 Cotswold Relay, 12miles oh dear by Big Kev
The day started in a bit of a daze, with a late finish last night including a couple of pints of authentic Cider, meant that sleeping was not a problem, however getting up was! A further downside to the night before was the muggy head and the dehydration it brought with it. Still, I was able to get a bowl of porridge down and out early enough to pick Emma up on time. Once collected and driven to the start it is apparent Emma is far more up for this than I am! The temperature was lower than our last attempt at running the route, so I decide to leave the bag in the truck and just run with a water bottle instead. I then decide that it would be a good idea to break with all known common sense rules for running and consume a couple of dextro's tablets and then a Mars bar for energy, as all that sugar will obviously be good for me (muppet)! The race is under way and for the first 5 miles I am feeling fine and I am just outside the top 10. I note the pace and decide to save some for the later climbs, but still feel good. At mile 6 I note the pace lift again and go with it, I must be fine. Mile 7 provides me with some very interesting feedback on the the previous 6 miles and its safe to say that all that sugar leaves my body, head first. The pace thereafter is a little slower than I would like, but understandably so. Mile 8 is a repeat of mile 7 and I am therefore forced to revaluate my position in the race, as runners flood past. I take on some fluids and start to feel a little better, then for the sting in the tail. Mile 10 delivers the ascent of Coopers Hill (Cheese Rolling hill), followed by mile 11 and another crazy climb, but at last its mile 12 and I am heading for home, this is now far more a mental challenge than physical, mostly down to having no physical ability left.
It is done! Not as fast as I would have liked, but thats ok as it is day 180 after all and not every run can be a PB. What am I saying this is a PB as it's the first time I have run this leg. All that is left is to collect Paul and Lucy from leg 5, eat (slowly) and then attend Simon and Vee's after party, bring it on.
Thanks to all my fellow GWR participants and especially Simon, Vee and Steve for all the organising. I am already looking forward to next year, glutton for punishment or what!

Day 342 -356 by Sallycinn
A few runs to catch up on. I've had a hamstring injury for the last couple of weeks so some runs have been slower than normal with a bit of walking involved. I didn't want to ignore it as I'm starting my training for my next marathon soon. Also, one of my runs didn't upload onto Garmin Connect. I definitely did it (this is the second time it's happened) as I ran home from work - I remember it clearly. Unfortunately, I haven't uploaded my runs every day to the blog so didn't notice there had been a technical fault. Anyway, I know I did it and I'm hoping it'll reappear at some point. I love the discipline this challenge has given me but I don't like the technical side to it!!
Run with my sister on Father's Day - dad's injured so couldn't come out.

The penultimate day, been to work and out shopping so decided to combine my run with the dogs. We went for a run around the levels with a quick stop off for them to have a swim as it was still very hot even in the mid afternoon. Enjoyed the run, so did the dogs !!!

Jack: Day 366/365...They think its all over.
What do you do if you don't run?
This morning was due to be my first day off after completing the challenge. It was a surprise then to find myself waking up before my alarm at 5:45am with a strong desire to run. I decided to go with it and so found myself, a little surprised - but smiling nonetheless, jogging my standard 5km morning loop towards Giffnock and back before work. My work colleagues were shocked by this decision as I had been looking forward to having a day without running for quite a while! I think deep down though I always knew that I would run on day 366. I was a little concerned at the start of the challenge that I would lose my passion for running by the end of it - running every single day would surely remove some of the enjoyment? I found myself however enjoying it even more as the challenge came to a close (although I won't deny that there was a period after about 200 days when things were pretty grim!). Whether this could be attributed to finally running in the sun as summer arrived, or to my improved fitness as I became more conditioned, I have definitely emerged from the challenge an even more enthusiastic runner than I had been previously. I will continue to run (although not every day) and I am sure I will continue to enjoy it.
Now I need to focus on moving on and finding my next challenge.
To be continued...
Jack: Day 365/365...MISSION COMPLETE!
I DID IT!
I cannot believe that the challenge is over! Today I completed the toughest challenge of my life (so far). When Tony first mentioned the run365challenge to me as we sat in the box at CrossFit Glasgow I was impressed with his commitment however I did not fully appreciate the extent to which this challenge would test an individual. The difficulty was not in the distance covered, but in finding time every day to dedicate to running. The ability to find this time every single day has opened my eyes to so many possibilities. If I can find half an hour to run every day, I can do anything. I will never again be able to blame time constraints on my being unable to achieve something!
My final day was a great experience. I had not planned anything exciting for my last run. I would be working all day, Vicki was working in the evening and my mates were busy with the school prizegiving ceremony. I had just about accepted that my final run would be a solitary experience, jogging a final loop of Shawlands before cracking open a beer on my own to celebrate, when the guys at work suggested doing something different. They put forward the idea that I run before work and finish my 5k at the gates to the school. They offered to grab anyone who was kicking around before the start of the day and try to put some sort of finish line together for me. I decided that this would be the way forward.
I arrived at the school nice and early and dumped my bags in the classroom. A couple of the fellas watched me head out on my jog and I really enjoyed the run. I took it easy and reflected on the many places that I had experienced thanks to the challenge. Memories of running in South Africa exactly one year ago flashed through my mind as I pounded the streets of Paisley. What a year! As I hit the half way mark I turned and began to stride towards the school. I passed several of my pupils on the way who offered cheers of encouragement and applause. Nothing had prepared me however for the welcome I would receive as I turned the final corner. A crowd of pupils and staff lined the school driveway like a guard of honour, armed with confetti and bunting. A huge cheer erupted as I passed through the gates and took my final few steps towards the paper-chain finish line. Left speechless I was congratulated by my colleagues before the bell shattered the moment and the crowds dispersed for their morning's classes.
The morning saw another £70ish pounds raised for my charity and I spent the day feeling like a celebrity as the pupils and staff alike came to shake my hand throughout the day. I could not have asked for a better finish to the challenge and it all tied in with my final few days at the school. Great memories.
My final statistics:
Days run: 365
Distance covered: 2,639.52km
Fastest 5km: 16:43
Fastest 10km: 34:53
Fastest Marathon: 2hrs 53mins 38secs

179/365 A run interrupted by the fire brigade by Big Kev
It was again all go this morning with a few work things to catch up on before my daily run. When I got out on the road/trail I headed down Leigh Court drive way to be confronted by the fire brigade staring up at the trees. I ran by and didn't think to much about it and made my way in to Leigh Woods. On my return leg it becomes apparent that matters have escalated quickly, as when I reach the top of the climb leading back onto the driveway the fire brigade now have the extendable ladder reaching into the trees with a tree surgeon in the basket helping to make a path into a large oak tree. I am allowed by and I notice a very anxious looking resident looking up into the tree, therefore it doesn't take Colombo to work out that a family pet is obviously settled in the tree tops.
I only had a few hundred yards to go, so I don't stay around to find out the conclusion of the search, I hope there was a successful recovery.
Oh the things I have seen on the challenge! Bring on the Cotswold relay tomorrow.

Pete Day 363 - 22.6 mile run home from work by Pljrun
As I enter the final straight did my last long run today with a trot home from work, at about 20 miles wished I hadn't boy it was hot and I was drained. Still I made it and considering it was my longest run since London, only done a couple of 14 milers I was quite pleased with the time because I was trying to take it easy.

Another wet day to add to the list, it certainly spurs you on to get home, when it wet, windy and you know food is being cooked. Way quicker than anticipated!
Thank you so much girls, especially Tina for tonights cooking. Pizza and chips, now I know thats perhaps not the most nutritionally balanced meal on offer, however the change and calories made it very acceptable.

177/365 A nonstop 8 mile club run, vroom! by Big Kev
I hadn't planned such a quick run considering the proximity to the relay on Saturday, however after some banter at the club and an agreed 8 miles set we headed out into the evening sun. Without knowing it I found myself towards the back of the group happily chatting away. Then at the observatory I noted that Marcus and Dave had carried on, so I trotted on hoping to catch up and continue the banter regarding Dave's new shoes. Well it took 3 miles and a lot of work to catch up and by the time I did chatting was the last thing on my mind. Eventually we were on the turn for home and Marcus was on a mission, so Dave and I let him go while various bits of grass where removed from the new shoes. Only seconds passed and we were on our way again and we felt no need to stop on the way back.
All so soon we are back at the club and the terrain and time have been tamed for another evening. All that is left is to consume some food and beverage and the evening is done. Good work GWR another day completed on the run365challenge.

So Monday's run was early, well Tuesday run was even earlier than that! With another fun packed day ahead of me (no irony), I needed to get out early. The Summer mornings make this a real pleasure and no real effort. The run was easy and not too quick as I have one eye on Saturday's relay race and I also need to keep the energy levels up for the week ahead.
Bring on the appointments and the evening as Tina and I have the pleasure of each others company with no interruptions. Lets hope I have got all the film details correct this time around!

Charles: Day 175/365 - Time to say goodbye to this challenge
My Last Blog
Run details - Day 175/365 challenge
I have been thinking about this for some time and after tonight's run it is with great sadness and regret that I have decided that it will be my last run on this challenge.
For anybody that knows me, I have not found this decision an easy one because I never ever give up on a challenge. I think I proved this last year (on my first round of the challenge) when I tore my hip muscle and hobbled on through great pain and discomfort for weeks on end. However, this year I have to call it a day because my legs are totally dead and I have lost all strength and speed in them.
I also have to be realistic with myself and consider my current fitness levels in that I will not be able to complete the other challenges ahead of me during the rest of this year with 1 x full marathon, 5 x half marathons, 3 x 10k's and 2 x 5k's still to go. I also have the Dopey Challenge in Disney Florida in January and 2 more marathons and numerous half marathons planned for next year. The Dopey Challenge is my main priority at the moment and there is no way I can continue to run everyday and do the necessary training that I need to put in over the next 6 months.
I thought that I would share a few stats of my meager efforts:
Total Distance: 3,879.79 km = 2411.31 miles
Total Days: 582 days out of a possible 597 days
(This is 401 days first time + 6 days during 3 weeks break + 175 days this time around)
Average: 4.14 miles per day
Total Races: 1 x marathon, 1 x 20 mile, 6 x half marathons, 2 x half kilomathons, 10 x 10k and 11 x 5k (and 2 x 5k Race for Life runs with Michelle)
I have to say that can't be too bad for an 18 stone 45 year old bald man :)
I have loved every minute of doing the run365challenge and I have made some good friends along the way. The highlight of my time must be that I have met and been out running with others that had taken up the challenge i.e. Tony, Ben, Marg, Nicky and Sally.
I doubt this is the last you'll hear from me on the blog because I'll keep reading everyones progress and make the odd comment along the way. I'm also pretty sure that I'll take up this challenge again at some point next year, after I've finished with the marathons and half marathons that I've got planned.
I wish everybody the best for rest of the challenge and will say my goodbyes.
Cheers,
Charles

I doubt this is the last you'll hear from me on the blog because I'll keep reading everyones progress and make the odd comment along the way. I'm also pretty sure that I'll take up this challenge again at some point next year, after I've finished with the marathons and half marathons that I've got planned.
I wish everybody the best for rest of the challenge and will say my goodbyes.
Cheers,
Charles
Pete Day 355 to 360 - Catch up time, been busy with work and visitors by Pljrun
With five days left to the big 365 thought I better catch up. Been very busy at work (normally upload during the day) and we have the grand kids for the week so very difficult to catch up at night!! Anyway nothing special other than I have found my springers are great running companions kept on the lead, tried to run with them to save time (not having to go out agin for a walk) and it was great 5 miles on Saturday and 3 miles tonight. Give them a short break for a swim in the river then off again. Sunday Paul and I went off to Long Sutton and then over the woods to Pitney and back to Langport , great run great company.

Following the highs and lows of the weekend an early start is required today, so that I can fit in everything a Monday has on offer. With a blue sky and a warm sun it really isn't to difficult to get up an out at this time of the morning. Especially as I still have the scars of running before 7:30am from the Winter, I am therefore going to enjoy every step now, while I can.
With a hectic work schedule planned and the prospect of expanding the Caple Banks team on the cards today is going to be a good day. I also have a pool session booked for the trainee scuba divers this evening, so it really is a fun packed day, it looks like it will be another late finish.
Loving it.

Charles: Day 174/365 - Glenrothes 10k
Tough hilly Glenrothes 10k today and I struggled in the heat and humidity. I also reckon that I will be ending my time on this challenge very soon because after more than a year and a half of running every day my legs are starting to give up. The legs are dead and I have no speed whatsoever in them.

174/365 Cotswold relay leg 4 recce part 2, 4 ish miles by Big Kev
Today's run was a necessity following our deviation from the planned leg 4 route of the Cotswold Way relay. With the race just 6 days away, Emma and I went back to the finish and worked our way through to the point where we went off piste on Wednesday's recce run. From my Garmin map I could see it was about 2 miles from the finish so we started off knowing that around 4 -5 miles of running over all would see us there and back. What we hadn't quite accounted for though were the 2 massive climbs and ascents before we reached the point where we went wrong. The highlight of this was Coopers Hill (famous for the cheese rolling) and seeing it up close and personal for the first time makes me understand why, some people want to ban it and why others quite literally throw themselves into it!
With all the dots on the map now joined up I can now enjoy an easier week in preparation for Saturday.

Todays run was not a planned race for a PB, it just somehow happened. I continue to surprise myself that as I get further and further into this challenge the PB's just keep on coming. I have said this before, but it is worth repeating Ashton Court Parkrun is no normal 5K! For the uninitiated it's a little uphill and then a nice jog down hill to the finish and for those that know better, be quiet.
Today was also about final goodbyes, but not forgetting. We laid to rest Big Dave in the nicest way, with the nicest people and in glorious sunshine. It's as if the conditions had been aligned to the timings as agreed.
Stories continued to be shared back at his home and lunch enjoyed on his bench in the garden, all in all a great day. Just one more reason to keep on going!

Today's run was squeezed in between a series of interviews we were holding for a position in the company, so I didn't want to stray to far from the office. As the office is just of a road called Two mile Lane, I thought great, up and back and the job will be done. Not so, in the olden times I believe people were prone to exaggeration and in the case of Two Mile Lane this is very true. The actual distance from end to end is just under one mile and from where I started it was 3/4 of a mile. Therefore a couple of laps were required to get the job done.
I am already looking forward to the weekend and I might even get to Parkrun tomorrow, which would be the first time for several weeks. Lets see what Friday night has to offer first.

171/365 A steady run home 4 miles by Big Kev
171/365 A steady run home 4 miles by Big Kev
Tonights run thankfully, was nowhere as near as eventful as last night recce run. I had decided to run slowly and for a change it panned out that way. My first few steps were a real effort, but I knew that there were going to be points on this challenge where any discomfort had to be met with an equal measure of obstinance and determination. As I near the halfway point of this challenge I am reminded of some of the reasons why I am doing this in the first place. My passion for the outdoors and being involved with it allows me the freedom to participate in some amazing adventures. Whilst I am on this one I am hoping to raise well needed and deserved funds for Macmillan. In our darkest moments we turn to people we trust be it, family, friends or professionals. Macmillan are the professionals when it comes to caring for people with and the people affected by cancer.
At this juncture of the challenge whilst I am looking for donations to spur me on, I am at the same time looking to raise the profile of the challenge. So, to those that have already sponsored me, thank you and to those that are sharing my thoughts and whimsy far and wide, I thank you to. Please may both continue right up to the last day of the challenge.
Please forward, share, retweet or just use the good old word of mouth to let your circle of influence know what I am doing and how they can help.
Thanks

Very warm muggy evening for this 10k x-country race! Around 130 runners turned out including several seniors & juniors from our Langport Runners.
I struggled right from the off! Couldnt get my breathing sorted & struggled for breath for the whole race. Think because I was uptight about this I had awful pain behind my collar bones too - probably because I was so tense! Hated every minute of the race & was so tired after 5km that I nearly walked. However, that isnt me, so I ploughed on and finished in 52:23 - 4 and a half minutes quicker than last year. Not quite sure how as I enjoyed last years race! Averaged about 8 and a half minute miles. I think I came third in my age category - woman who came second I usually beat so a bit gutted but not surprising seeing I struggled so much!!!

This evenings adventure (on the hottest day of the year) was an initial recce of leg 4 of the Cotswold Way relay. The clue is in the title, as the route follows the Cotswold way from Severn Springs to Cranham Corner. Its about 20km or 12.4 Miles with some severe climbs and descents as well as some amazing views. I had buddied up with Emma as we both have this leg to run on the 29th and had agreed some car sharing logistics with Paul and Lucy (who are running Leg 5). All, we needed to do was follow the signs, stay upright and enjoy the ride.
After setting off from the agreed starting point at Severn Springs the views across the ridge line were fantastic and we took our time to take it all in and the odd photo along the way. However, from the first step we knew the terrain was going to be tough and the heat was going to play a big factor. I was carrying a back pack and water bladder, so we weren't going to go short on fluids. For the most part the first half was hard but manageable and we just got on with it, the second half though was a very different prospect. The signs became sparse and the need to look at the map and then the terrain meant that you could become easily distracted. Whist on one section of trail I wasn't paying full attention to the terrain and it came back and kicked me, well I kicked it and tripped! Whilst falling towards the ground, two options presented themselves, slide or roll. I chose to roll and to good effect, by the time Emma had heard the crash, bang wallop, I had completed a full roll and was back on my feet (cool). With no ill effect or any sign of damage we got back to the task at hand and I paid a bit more attention to the floor.
With the floor now taking a higher priority and with the map directions becoming sparse, we made a directional mistake (got lost) and ended up in Cranham. After a very steep climb to the top of Cranham hill we agree to ask for directions. With directions sorted we were soon back on track and nearing the end, but even with this short detour (1 mile) we finished in good spirits.
We are going to come back one more tie to work out where we went wrong, but fortunately this is only 2 miles from the end so we will run this in reverse until we find our mistake. The final journey home after collecting Paul and Lucy was eventful but that's another story. Tomorrows run, is definitely going to be slow an easy!

Jack: Day 361/365...Race Day! MHFS 10km (New P.B.!!)
This morning I woke up and went through my standard 'pre-race routine'; Porridge, Boost, Lucozade and a banana. I jumped on a bus down to Bellahouston park and was impressed with the setup! 3500 people were taking part in the 10km run with an earlier 'rascal run' boosting the numbers further. I had a wander around the stalls before bumping into Kenny and exchanging tactics. My plan for sub 36 was playing on my mind. I felt that my fitness was still pretty strong but my knee problems were constantly in my head. The weekend prior to the race I was made aware of a 'parkrun-rival' of mine securing a sub 35min 10k. This got me thinking about the possibility of going even faster and I set my Garmin up for sub 35.
As the race gun fired I powered away from the start line feeling strong. I went with the sub35 minute pace and felt good. The pace was fast but I could see the kilometres ticking by. As I passed half way I was still on track and feeling strong however at 7.5km I became aware of a slight ache in my knee. The pain got steadily worse and the final kilometre was pretty brutal. I just about managed to maintain my required pace and crossed the line in 34mins 53secs. A happy (but sore!) man and a definite PB!

Jack: Day 359-360/365...Race prep.
These days were simple, short and slow 5km jogs. I planned on completing the MHFS 10km on Sunday and was hoping to achieve a new p.b. With my previous 10km race being a few years prior to this challenge I had no idea what my p.b. actually was! However I could not remember ever achieving a sub 36minute run.
I was struggling with a really painful knee over these days. I am not sure what sparked it however my upcoming race led me to take a careful approach to my training. I simply covered my minimum distance without overdoing the pace or the effort.

The last mile Done
I'd been a little quiet and nervous about this all day (seems silly really) but I had come this far and I didn't want to miss the last run of the challenge as all the hard work would have meant nothing.
I ran the mile as fast as I could hoping for one final PB and I think I did it in 6:07.7 so as far as I can tell from all the garmin info thats a new PB..
I'd like to thank all my family and friends who have shown support and help over the year but most of all I'd like to thank my lovely girlfriend Laura who helped me so much with the runs during the winter when it was cold and shitty. Thank you so so much you are a star.
I completed 1,102.96 miles, 2 marathons, 2 Half marathons, 8 5km, 6 10km races and alot of training runs on road and off road.
Most of all I learned that despite my ICD shocking me and been taken away from a race by ambulance I AM UNSTOPPABLE....

Lets get it out there quickly, the run was great the working day bitty and the evening with Tina not quite as planned!
The run was an early one past Abbot Leigh pool and up to Ashton court, It was very quiet and it was just me and the wildlife. A lovely way to start the day and another 5K under the belt.
The plan following work was to spend and evening with just Tina, to take in a movie and some dinner, as we had some free cinema tickets. Well the evening didn't start well as the traffic meant that I arrived with only minutes to spare, only to find out that the free tickets are for next week, doh! Fortunately we have been married for a very long time and can find these things funny (now). Lets have another go next week.
Another day on the challenge.

168/365 A dash around the woods at lunchtime 5K by Big Kev
Not a great deal to report today, as Monday's normally pan out, its more about work than it is about running and today is no exception. The work is so fascinating at the moment that when I am in it, its hard to break away to go running. So today's lunchtime run came when there was a natural pause in the activities. With the minimum being covered I knew I had time for a shower and lunch before getting my head back in the game.
An early run is needed tomorrow to fit in with work and home plans, so I am hoping the weather is going to be kind.
Another big thank you to my new sponsors your support and kind words are a real boost.

Even on Fathers days the running continues and errands needed to be completed. Today's plan was one that constantly evolved, not because of anything we were particularly doing but more because of the external factors effecting everything else. The breakfast with the girls was a great start and was meant to fuel me for a late morning run across the old Severn Bridge, after we dropped Katie into work as I needed to pick up the scuba school regs from Wales after they had been serviced. The dropping off went well, but from there on in everything had to be adapted on the hoof. The simple task of going from Long Ashton to Avonmouth and onto the motorway turned into a real mission. Upon crossing the Cumberland basin we can see and realise that its Bristol's Big Bike Ride and the Portway is shut, compound this with every other car being diverted and Bristol is grinding to a slow halt. Wind the journey on 45 minutes and only 6 miles further and we finally reach the Motorway via Cribbs Causeway and we are heading down the M4 towards Chepstow, only to find out that the old Severn Bridge is Shut!!! Keep calm and carry on, another 45 minutes later and we finally pull in to the NDAC in Chepstow only to find out that one set of regs isn't quite ready, guess who's, you don't have to it's my set!
Tina GMTFO, not only are my regs not ready, I can I not run across the bridge and we have to drive along the diversions to get home. Lets just stop off on the way home and I will run home from where ever we stop. Right that's it I am at least running home from from Costco, I have a rough idea how far it is but I really don't care. I put my jacket on and just went for it, rain, wind, I just don't care. I do believe this is another rule #6 day.
However, once home normality is returned and the afternoon is fantastic, as is the evening now Katie is back home and dinner is being made. Thanks for a lovely day girls even with the distractions.

166/365 Just turning the legs over 5K by Big Kev
Following Friday's efforts on the Towpath todays runs was a matter of turning the legs over and seeing what happened. The good news is that not too much inconvenience or discomfort was experienced. The speed though was obviously a little down from yesterday but still a lot better than I expected. I stuck to the roads today and went from home to the cricket club in Pill and back. I picked my time to run today based on the rain or lack there of and the list of jobs that needed to be completed first. With Katie now home for the summer some reorganisation of the home logistics is required, as is the furniture. With the jobs completed I then got outside and took in the views, its great to be outside on a day like this.
Lets see what Fathers day bring, some jobs I think?

Pete Day 346 to 350 - Catch up time by Pljrun
Five days to catch up on, mostly standard 3.3 mile lunchtime runs so nothing special. Todays run was the Langport 10k route and when I came to upload it my watch had thrown a wobbly. It dated the run 14th but when I looked at the elapsed time it said 27:04 hours! me thinks it must have been set to start when I switched it off, but I did run today and was spotted by friends. Entering the final two weeks now, worrying about every little ache and pain !!!

165/365 Towpath 10K another PB Whoop Whoop! by Big Kev
165/365 Towpath 10K another PB Whoop Whoop! by Big Kev
With an amazing working week coming to an end the thought of a PB after all the running efforts of the weekend before were entertained, if only fleetingly. This goal seemed to be disappearing fast as I entered the park to the start of the wind and rain! After a warm up and a catch up with friends it was already time to get to the start line. The hesitancy of my fellow runners meant that Marcus and I walked down the starting funnel first. This is the point that we normally hold back a few yards from the line to let the faster runners line up in front of us, however as Mike started the safety announcements we soon realised that no one had moved to the front and before we knew it Mike called us forward to start the race. Oh well how many times is this going to happen anyway?
With the race underway a typical Kevin start meant that the first mile was completed quick smart. The brain then kicked in and the pace settled and few runners went by, then I pushed on toward the half way mark to turn at what would also have been a 5K PB. At the turn I did realise that the momentum could not be maintained and I settled to and for a more manageable pace and just waited for the hordes of runners to come screaming past me. Well another mile in and no one came past, keep digging in Kev they must be on your heels, but agin no one came past. Come on Kev just over a mile to go they must be all waiting for a sprint finish, just hang on. Kev the line is in sight just push on give it your all, with a quick check over the shoulder and I see I have what I hope is enough of a gap between me and the runner behind, go, go, go. The line is here and no one came past and it's another all time PB 38:41, wow! Then I hear it, "well done Kev you were 16th". There must be a mistake, but no, oh my days! Then it hits me hard, not the joy and surprise, no the effort hits me, hard! Breathe, breathe hard, come on or you will be on the deck face down, breathe.
After the breathing comes the pain, then the adrenaline, then and only then the smile! 16th overall, 3rd Vet 40 and a new PB of 38:41 on day 165, BOOM!
An easier run tomorrow I think!

Charles: Day 165 & 166/365 - Two more basic runs
Two more basic runs with one on a trail route. My right knee and both my calf muscles are giving me absolute hell at the moment and I am more hobbling than running. My Athens marathon training starts a week on Monday so I hope I feel better before then. Also, I've got a tough hilly 10k Race a week on Sunday and I am dreading it with my dead legs.
Never mind I've got the Race for Life around Arthur's Seat tomorrow with Michelle to give her support. I'll also be wearing my famous Pink Panther suit again. Pics to follow......

164/365 A 5K run arounds the docks by Big Kev
164/365 A 5K run arounds the docks by Big Kev
Tonights run was a real change from the normal Thursday run, after a lovely surprise guest came across for dinner. With the plans rearranged for tonight I had the opportunity to drop Katie into the city centre and then run around the docks. It was quite windy this evening which required a fair bit of effort to run in to and at every turn there seemed to be dressed up teenagers in the way, the penny then dropped and I realised it was prom night in Millennium Square. I had already decided to do a circuit around the docks (floating harbour) and set off from outside Mshed, so the place was packed. I did have tomorrow nights 10K Towpath race on my mind whilst running, so I wanted a good average pace and at least one mile at race pace. With all the weaving and dodging done and the watch stopped I was very pleased with the overall time and even more pleased with the splits, I hope I can maintain this tomorrow, if so I will be a very happy man.
The journey home made me smile as what are the odds that another major prom event would be on the same night but in a different location. Unfortunately for me that location was at Leigh Court which is opposite my road. It appeared that every taxi and minibus was heading down the drive to the mansion house, which in turn caused a major traffic jam. The reason this bites is that it took at least 20 minutes to travel less than one mile, but if I had not gone into town in the first place and just run my normal route I would have travelled over 3 miles in the same time!
Still at least the music in the car got turned up loud and I had time to unwind.

Jack: Day 348-358/365...Getting close!
After an easy Sunday 5k I decided to have another crack at running to school. Monday I did this journey and it felt tough. It was hard to motivate myself for some reason and felt sluggish. I guess the year of running is finally catching up with me! After this effort my foot was once again feeling a little sore and so I toned it down a bit for the rest of the week. Most of these are minimum distance efforts although I did make the effort to run to and from CrossFit on Sunday and also on Tuesday. This meant that on each of these days my distance came in at just under 10 kilometres.
On Thursday (Day 358) I decided to run into school. The plan was for a cheeky 6 miler to the school and then home again later in the day. Disaster struck however when I reached 3.5km and felt a twinge in my knee. I realised that I did not have time to turn back and that, if I were to slow to walk, I would be late for work, I had no option but to continue jogging. I managed to find a few minutes to walk at various intervals and I dropped my pace a little but just about made it to work in the end. I changed my plan to jog home and rather took a lift from Hilary. I will be taking it fairly easy over the next couple of days and just hope that my 10k race on Sunday goes to plan...

163/365 Summer 8 in the rain at GWR by Big Kev
163/365 Summer 8 in the rain at GWR by Big Kev
A relatively quiet group run this evening but with the main protagonist in attendance the conversation was as lively as ever. Credit was being given where credit was due and mainly to the organisation and running of the Welsh Castles relay, but that was so last weekend, what activities do we now need to focus on. Someone said to me a long time ago, 'you are only as good as your last race', I therefore didn't join that club and went for the GWR ethos of everyone is welcome. That approach means that whilst we like to compete, its not at all costs and the 'race' is a social and supportive event. The next social event, I mean race is Friday and the second 10K of our Towpath series. Whilst I am looking to run hard and see what happens I am also looking to catch up with more friends afterwards and this may even involve a beer!
Beyond Friday our thoughts then turn to the Cotswold Relay and our respective legs (relay and physical) and how logistical, physically and mentally we need to prepare. I feel another excuse for a social coming on, just to make sure we get it all right on the day of the race, I think the technical term is reece.

As per yesterday another nice early run, as the focus today is on work and then a long round trip to go a pick Katie up from Uni. Its her last exam today and then she is off for the summer, oh to be young and irresponsible again! (no comments required in response please). The run itself is not overly noteworthy, in that, at that time of the morning the woods are only occupied by the odd cyclist and dog walkers, so its great to grind it out and get it done. The pace though, again is of a higher level than I would have thought and I am beginning to wonder if this is now the norm. I have certainly travelled some miles on my feet and in the car/truck/minibus over the last week, so I am thinking I will take it easy tomorrow on the club run and catch up with friends as planned.
Right let get ready for the day!

Not to much to report on this one, as some days I appreciate I just need to go out and run. So following on from Sunday's mountainous effort this should just have been a gentle run. Should of been being the operative words. It still amazes me how the human body can deal with all the stresses that we throw at it and in my case more than is medically safe and yet we can still keep moving!
I started the run uphill at a pace that most would consider a good pace on the flat and then proceeded to go faster. By the end of it I am almost at race pace, what is going on? I can remember back over the last few years that any effort of the kind that was exerted on Sunday would have left me in bits for days to come and yet here I am running like it never happened, astounding!
Let's see what tomorrow brings and if and when this catches up with me.

160/365 Leg 16 of the Welsh Castles Relay by Big Kev
160/365 Leg 16 of the Welsh Castles Relay by Big Kev
Day 2 of the Welsh Castles relay starts early as always and for some earlier than anticipated! For me on the other hand I slept soundly in my nice quite tent. The first leg starts at 7:00 am, so most people are up and about by 5:30 am prepping either themselves or the logistics for the day. My duties for the day were to deliver 3 athletes to the start of their legs and pick up 2 who have finished, provide water and support to the runners and also run my leg. With a bit of thought on how best to accomplish this before we set off all drama's were avoided and it all went to plan. Damien was wished well for the first leg of the day and then Alun was deliver in plenty of time so he could warm up, Fi was allowed time to get settled before her leg and the rest of the bus was feed. The spontaneous water stops were provided along the way and we cheered on al the runners. When we reached the bottom of Drovers we gave Dave Wintle our full support and then headed up the mountain, only to realise that the leg had been cut short due to an impromptu rave where the finish should be! Therefore we didn't see Dave finish as we needed to move on to the start of my leg.
My leg (16 out of 20) was the mountain stage from Brecon to Brecon reservoir which entails a 1000ft of ascent over the 8.8 miles. Now even though I am happy to run hills this was a real test. This is the last mountain stage of the relay and clubs challenging for the Kings and Queens of the mountain title put out some of their best runners. One particular runner Martin Rees is worth a mention, not only did he win the leg, he broke the course record and beat me by 10 minutes. At 42 I had been living with the fact that the race times, over time would progressively get slower, however Martin has shown me the way. Martin is 60 years of age and now holds various world records for distances run by a 60 year old. he recently set the 5K world record at 16.17 along with the 10K record in the Bristol 10K at 32.54. There is still hope!
It was a pleasure (sort of) to run with athletes of this calibre from clubs all over the country and I very pleased with my 24th place from a field of 61 in 60.23. This was brought home to me when someone asked how the challenge was going and I must say that I had almost forgotten I was on it and that 160 days had been covered. When I look at my result in this context, I am over the moon.
After my finish and while waiting for my fun bus, it was fascinating to watch the logistical nightmare that is the moving of 1220 athletes from Caernarfon to Cardiff drive right by me. After being picked up and cursing runners of a smaller build (for a bit) the driving duties were restored at Caerphilly Castle where we waved Dave Honeywill on his way for the last leg heading to Cardiff castle. With the relay complete and the castle grounds full of teams we exchanged stories with friends laughed a bit more and then after the presentations headed home. So not top glories for GWR this year, but that not the main reasons to take part in the relay, it is all about the journey with friends old and new. Well done to one and all that took part and made this weekend very special. Lets hope we get in next year.

159/365 Day 1 of the Welsh Castles Relay by Big Kev
159/365 Day 1 of the Welsh Castles Relay by Big Kev
After a great drive up on Friday night and some real laughs along the way, it was time to bed down in the leisure centre for the night. The start of the 210 mile relay was upon us and as my leg wasn't until tomorrow my run needed to be early. This was not a problem as the lights come on a 6:00 am and as the echo's of a restless night still reverberate around the hall Graham and I agree to duck out now to miss the queue for the showers.
I was really looking forward to the run as I was hoping to mirror the run I had done only a matter of day ago, on earthquake day. This was not to be as the pedestrian bridge was swung open, so a detour was required. Thinking on our feet, quite literally, we headed inland and found the cycle track that ran parallel to train track that heads to Snowdon. Before we knew it it was time to turn and head back to the castle and the minibus. Our conversation was obviously full of thoughts on the weekend to come, but something that was almost to obvious to state was that the weather was going to play a big factor in the events to come.
After a peaceful shower, an excellent breakfast at Weatherspoons and a liberal application of suncream, the relay start was about to begin. Our mascot for the weekend was enacted by Audrey Butler, who in her 70's made Grommet from Wallace and Grommet come to life in a very different way. We met the Mayor of Caernarfon who will never forget us and with our cheers still ringing around the walls the race has begun. 10 relay legs today, 10 athletes of all ages battling for their teams against the elements and the landscapes that throws mountains at you at every turn! Kev's fun bus had the job of supply and demand today, supply the athletes at certain positions, give water on demand and shout, scream and holler support at every turn.
We did this job to the best of our abilities and with one slight deviation the jobs were completed well and on time (sorry Alan). With everyone doing their best it was only going to be a good day and in the end it was, as at the end Paul turned in a spectacular performance, in spectacular scenery against a spectacular array of athletes. What will tomorrow bring.

158/365 A run before a long drive by Big Kev
The day started very early with the opportunity to get a couple of hours work done before the phone starts ringing and the emails start flying. I was therefore able to also sort breakfast for the family and wish Tina and Jess a good day, as I would be travelling up to North Wales for the weekend that afternoon.
The start of the Welsh Castle Relay weekend was finally here! Therefore the run today was always going to be the minimum and I tried to kept my pace under control. The weather has been improving all week so it wasn't too difficult.
Here's to the weekend.

Pete Days 342 to 344 - Walking festival weekend follow and de rig by pljrun
Langport two day walking festival weekend so Friday was rig route day so had an early morning 3.1 miler round Bowdens before setting off around the area putting up signs.
Saturday and a 5am start to go and mark the rest of today's route, went off at about 1pm to follow the walkers and derig the route as I run removing the red and blue tape from the gates and styles. It was really warm and after running 16.8 miles I was pretty worn out, this off road running through thigh high grass and nettles is hard going.
Sundays run was going to be easier as Neal and Di where going to do most of it, but I ended up trying to find a couple of lost walkers, found them in the end miles from where they should have been so ended up with less miles than I wanted, but glad after yesterdays sun stroke efforts !! Really enjoyed running in places we don't usually get a chance to cover, the views over Somerset from Compton Dundon beacon are stunning, well worth a trip to the top.
