Marg: Day 143/365 Challenge - Royal Pines, Hilton Head Island

I was not too sure about running on the beach after my last beach run in Florida, so Brad and I ran a beautiful 3 miler alongside Royal Pines golf course. It was very pretty and shaded with the most wonderful old South Carolina trees. It was very humid as they had not long had the storms that we had had in the Smoky Mountains the day before. We went onto the beach in the evening and I think it will be good for some runs during the week.

Charles: Day 145 to 147/365 - Just 'run' of the mill stuff

Sorry for the pun folks but I couldn't resist it :)

Not much to say about these 3 runs except that they were quite tedious and boring and that I felt totally knackered all week. Never mind Kilomathon tomorrow so hope my energy levels pick up before then :)

Quick 2 miler with Alfie. Chilly morning compared to the gorgeous weather we have been having. Got back & received a phone call telling me that I have a place for tomorrows Taunton Marathon. EEEEEK!!! Oh well, in for a 2 miles in for 26!!!

Nicky: Day 156/365 Upton Woods again

Another lovely evening, popped out & headed once again through Upton Woods. Such a nice little run! Quiet, off road with stunning views across the Somerset levels.

Day 142/365 Challenge - Smoky Mountains

We travelled through some terrible thunderstorms on the way to our cabin in the Smoky Mountains but it was well worth it when we got there. I decided that I had better get out for a run as soon as possible as I did not want to run on these narrow dirt roads in the dark since it was still raining and there were a few cars. I mistakenly though I was on a road a one point when it gave out completely and I continued on through the scrub thinking it would turn back into a road further along and it ended in an electric fence! So I made my way back and found some paved roads to run on. It rained steadily and I was soaked and muddy by the time I got back. I think I might be ready to try some mud runs!

Day 141/365 Challenge - getting ready to leave

Pretty tired tonight as we are hoping to leave early in the morning and getting everything done tonight. Just a bit of a jog around Foster Grove and Smokey Ridge. Raining but not cold so I did not mind getting wet.

Day 140/365 Challenge - around the block with Brad

Another nice crisp night, but not too cold. We just did the usual around one of the favorites. So many people out walking and running. Great to see, but now no more solitary runs in the moonlight I think. Much as I am glad the cold weather is gone it felt good to have been crunching through that fresh snow, knowing that there was no-one else mad enough out there to be doing the same thing. Last day of work today and tomorrow we drive the 14 hour trip to Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. We will stop on the way in the Smoky Mountains (just into North Carolina from Tennessee and stay the night in a little mountain cabin. I am looking forward to running in some different locations.

Gorgeous sunny evening. Warm & not a cloud. Alfie came too, so we did just a short 2.6m up through Upton Woods. Calfs (calves) still tight!!! Hmmm

Nicky: Day 154 Run with Club

Lovely evening. Ran with the club & we did a 5miler along the river bank & back through the country lanes. Cool but sunny. Felt great apart from my calfs still being a little bit stiff! This is what happens when I run a half mara with my Newtons! Hmmm.

Charles: Day 144/365 - The bladder goes splish splish

Another knackered run at lunchtime in the unseasonably hot March weather. I think half of me melted away into the pavement because I was sweating buckets loads so a short slow 5k was in order.

Because I thought my lunchtime run was so rubbish, I decided to do a second 5k tonight and I used my OMM hydration pack for the first time to try and get used to it and I'm better starting of with short runs. The pack fits quite nicely but there's a few straps and buckles that are a nuisance so I'm going to try and re-route and tape them up. The water in the bladder goes splish splish gurgle gurgle with each step and is quite annoying but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Its just the water splashing around and there's no bounce of the backpack itself. The water mouth piece has a bite down end and the water tasted of a horrible rubber so I'll need to try and get rid of the taste before my Highland Fling race at the end of April.

Day 139/365 Challenge - Smokey Ridge

I have not been around Smokey Ridge for a while and it was great to see all the crab apples and cherries and magnolias in flower. The best tree of the spring so far, however is the native red bud. Very pretty. two days to spring break....but who is counting!

Day 137/365 Challenge - Two new running buddies

I took Poppy and Rosie (our Jack Russell Terriers) with me on my run today. Ended up going for a bit longer than I intended as I missed a turn on the run. It was a nice afternoon and the dogs enjoyed it, however it is a little challenging at times to run with two dogs. They we getting pretty tired by the end. I think I need to build up their fitness as they are prone to patella subluxation and Poppy was already starting to favor her hind legs intermittently.

Charles: Day 143/365 - Dehydration in March!?

Lunchtime run at work in what turned out to probably be the hardest run ever. I was very tired, my legs were like lead and I was sore after my physio appointment this morning. I was also dehydrated because it was a beautiful hot sunny day (about 20 degrees Celsius) but not the best running conditions because its not normal for this time of year in Scotland and is in huge contrast to last week when we were still wearing thermal running gear. I ain't going to complain about the weather though because I'm loving the mini heat wave.

I think it might be time to try out my new OMM Last Drop 10L running hydration back pack with its 2 litre Platypus water bladder. I better start training with it now so that I get used to it before the Highland Fling :)

Firstly, I have no idea why my Yeovil Half Mara details have self published themselves 4 times???!!! I dont know how to delete them all either. Yes, I enjoyed the race very much, but not that much that I needed you to read about it so many times.
Anyway, back to today!! - The sun continues to shine. Did some gardening after work, then power pilatez & then popped out & did the 2 miles. Cool evening as it was getting dark. Calfs still tight but enjoyed the trot!

Charles: Day 142/365 - Off road foray with running club

Monday night running club and we made a beeline for Dalkeith Country Park becauae the summer nights are here and it was a beautiful warm night (actually too warm). It was the first time I've ran off road for any length of time for about 4 months and I didn't half feel it in the legs in the soft undulating ground. We all suffered tonight and the heat got to us all as well with everybody in desperate need of water by the time we finished. Too sum up tonight's run - tired, sore but loved it! :)

Charles: Day 141/365 - My Birthday Run at Sports Relief 6 Mile for Team Scotland

Early 5.45am start (really 4.45am start cos we changed the clocks to British Summer Time) to the day to get to Royal Mile in Edinburgh for the start of the Sports Relief 6 mile race for charity. Race went exceptionally well and I did the 6 miles in 49mins 49.79secs so I'm mega chuffed because just 5 weeks ago I could barely walk, let alone run, with my dodgy hip. The course was really boring with doing 5 loops of the same circuit but we had 6 massive hill climbs to do during the course so I could've run faster if it wasn't for all the damn hills :)

Someone said I was trouble so they put a sign up for me lol

It's also my birthday today and this is the card I got!! Cheeky monkees!!

My new Saucony Hurricane 14 trainers to compliment my almost knackered Hurricane 12's. Ultra light weight and very supportive. Superb trainers and highly recommended.

Benjours 74-77 - foot knackered

well, it turns out the extensor retinaculum in your foot is quite important and mine in particular is now protesting most strongly about being overused. These last 14 days it's been getting progressively worse/inflamed so much so that I'm now running with a limp and have real difficulty pursuading my tendons to even muster half an attempt to raise my toes for each step (I'm sorry for laughing at you Marg when I saw you running with sciatica on the beach in Ft Lauderdale! :-)
Nothing I'm doing is making it better (non-steroidals/stretching/RICE) and these last few days it's just been silly.. I can do pain, but this is now bordering on a physical disability that I don't have conscious control over ie I cannot physically lift my toes properly and so I've decided that I simply have to cut my minimum mileage down for a couple of weeks in the hope this improves.

So I'm doing a mile a day and seeing what happens, on the promise that when it's resolved I'll pick up the missing miles. Desperate times colleagues, but I'm not considering the alternative..

Day 136/365 Challenge - Sam Costa quarter marathon

Brad and I went in the Sam Costa today. Just the 1/4 marathon, not the 1/2 marathon. The 1/2 is the oldest road race in Indiana, going now for 43 years. They added the 1/4 marathon 7 years ago. It is a really pretty run through Carmel and about as hilly as Carmel can get. We were very pleased with our time for that distance and felt great. The running conditions were perfect, about 55oF, no wind and a bit overcast. The effect of the strength test on Thursday is now in full force and I will now retire to the bathtub for a long soak.

Marg: Day 135/365 Challenge - thunderstorms and house dash

I should have gone for a run as soon as I got home as the predicted storm was late. Anyway I did not get it in and when the storm did come it was very severe and still had not passed by 11.00. I told Brad that I was going to go out anyway and he insisted that it was a very bad idea. Running in a thunderstorm is not a huge deal in Australia as we reason that that the chances of getting hit are slim but this is not the case in the midwest. For some reason the impact of a strike here is much wider than we get back home and the risk of being struck by lightening while out in a storm is very much higher. I decided not to risk it and so had to get creative since we no longer have the treadmill and the foot pod does not pick up the movement of my foot on the elliptical as running. So I put my foot pod on (GPS would not have been sensitive enough) and yes you guessed it ... I ran around the house inside for 2 miles. Millie had 4 friends over for a sleep over who mentioned this morning that they could hear running upstairs last night, so I had to fess up and tell them what I was doing. I am sure they thought I was completely insane.

Marg: Day 134/365 Challenge - run to Gray with Millie

I convinced Millie to come for a run with me tonight. The deal was that we would only do 2 miles. It was a nice night and we just went down to Gray Rd and back. I had been to the gym during the day across the road from work. They have slot of new equipment and a new key system for tracking what you do. They needed to test me to start the program and the instructor said that I could pass on the cardio test since I ran every day but wanted me to do a maximal strength test. It was very strenuous. I am feeling ok now but I know tomorrow and the next day will be bad.

Charles: Day 140/365 - Head Thumping!

Early slow run to try and give myself maximum time to recover for my 6 miles sport relief efforts tomorrow. I found it hard going today due to a thumping sore head after being on the phone for over 2 hours to arrange car insurance, motorbike insurance and change gas & electric suppliers. My ear was burning and my head was banging and the last thing I wanted to do was go out for a run but I'm so glad I did and filled my lungs with the fresh air but I can't shift this sore head :(

At my dads for tonight so did a slow 5k along a fairly scenic route that's quite tough. It was a fairly chilly wind tonight so going out in just shorts and t-shirt was not perhaps the best idea I've ever had but it didn't half wake me up and bring on the dreaded joggers nipple :)

Charles: Day 138/365 - 1005.02km in 138 days :)

Tonight's run was in shorts and t-shirt and it felt great to finally get rid of the running tights, thermal tops, jackets and gloves. I also intended to just do 5k tonight but got a bit carried away and did 10k in 55 minutes and I wasn't even trying so all goes well for the Sports Relief 6 miles on Sunday. I just have to remember and just do the minimum 5k for the next 2 days.

As you know I keep track of my runs in an excel spreadsheet and tonight is that night that I broke through the magical 1000km mark. My distance to date is 1005.02km. I've never ran that distance in a year, never mind in just under 20 weeks. Mega well chuffed :)

I've finally completed, albeit about 30 day's late, Marg's 100 day 100 minute challenge. Promised you I would do it when I felt fit enough.

I did a double run today. A lunchtime run for 40 minutes and then and an evening run with the running club for 64 minutes which is a total of 104 minutes and 10.92 miles :))

I felt pretty good today but a little bit tired by the time I finished the run tonight but I'm not surprised because I'm only just getting back to full fitness and its been about 6 weeks since I ran more than 10 miles in one day. Help! I need advice on buying a running backpack with water storage.

As you all probably know, I'm doing a relay leg of the HOKA Highland Fling race along the West Highland Way. The relay legs are about 13 miles each (total distance of 53 miles) and its unsupported in terms of getting water and energy drinks along the route.

What is the best running hydration backpack that I can buy? It would preferably have a water carrier on the back and someplace to store a couple of energy bars and carry a waterproof jacket and hat and map.

I've heard about the Camelbak stuff but I've no idea what's best value for money, lightweight and won't bounce around on my back whilst I'm running. Can anybody please give me some advice?

Cheers,
Charles

Charles: Day 134/365 - Mothers Day Lunch

Felt heavy legged and lethargic during todays run so I took it easy and tried to keep to a consistent pace. Don't think it worked but I tried. The run was from the house to the local council rubbish dump where the wife met up with me so that we could throw out some stuff that had been nipping my head for ages.

High 70's today and we went on an 8 mile run. Started well but the "heat" beat us and we had to walk a bit every now and then in the last few miles. Hard to believe that we were running in singlet tops in what is technically still winter. Two weeksago we wer stillin gloves and balaclavas. As to be expected after a day like today, tornados predicted for the Midwest again this evening. Hope everyone will be OK.

Must be mad but I went out & did 30 miles today. Step mother came on her bike as company. Circular route with plenty of hills & flat bits. Felt knackered the whole way around - think this is confirmed by the slow time. Had to do quite a bit of walking, especially up all the hills.
Legs twitching like hell now. Think I may have overdone it a bit as I have done around 70miles the last 7 days - I usually average around 30m p/wk.
Odd thing is I weigh the same despite all this excercise. I should be like a twiglet!

I really enjoyed tonight's run and it was in the rain. Why do I love running in the warm(ish) rain so much? I just do!! So does that make me officially mad? Yes, according to the locals who kept saying I was crazy to be outside running in the rain :)

I always seem to put in my best times when it rains and tonight was no exception because I managed my quickest 5k in weeks which officially means I'm on the mend. The physio said today that I should be taking it easy for the next 2 weeks because I still get a niggling pain but I think she knows that I won't listen to her :))

Another boring run at lunch time at work. Not much to say about it other than it was boring and I'm bored with it. Do you see how bored I am with the route lol

Now that the longer and warmer nights are coming, I can now seek out a couple of new routes that are about 5 miles (8km) long to vary my lunch time runs at work. I also need to do the same at home to try and find longer varied routes and get myself re-motivated and stop feeling sorry for myself.

Finished work at 17:15 but I had promised myself a 6 miler. Colleague also keen to run, so off we went along the track around the lake. Really beautiful up here - I envy you Scottish lads!!! Hilly old route but we did a 6 miler out & back.
Cough still darn annoying, especially when heave ho-ing up the hills. Puff pant!!!

Up at a sales meeting at a country hotel near Aberfoyle in the Trossachs. Arrived 10ish and meeting doesnt actually start til 13:00, so popped out with a colleague & did a 3m out & back along the lake side. Another great day, the whole of Carmel seems to have exploded in daffodils, leaves are coming out, blossoms are on the early cherries... Spring is such a great time of year here. Got home a bit early today so that Millie could get her violin bow rehaired and some rosin, only to discover that the bow was completely worn out and we had to get a new one. I love going to the violin shop in old Carmel. It is like stepping into the wand shop in Harry Potter. He has just the right bow, violins and more for every individual player. Very enjoyable...you do not find many people around that get excited about rosin! Came back and went for a bike ride with Buzz and then a run with Brad. Legs like lead tonight. It was quite warm tonight, in the 70s after a high of 84oF today!

Benjours 65, 66 and 67 - who left the tap running?

Writing this whilst waiting to for Anusha to get home, before I go out for this evening's run. a bit pissed off today - plagued by tinnitus all day. Feels like someone has left a tap on right next to my head and all I can hear inside my head is running water - incredibly disorienting, hard to describe, not being able to get away from it - have got a doc's appt tomorrow lunchtime  - but this afternoon I threw the towel in and had to lie down with my eyes closed for hours -  felt a bit better when I woke up, but still Tinnitus is sat there in the background... grr!

Somehow (I can guess it's related to running!) I've tweaked my extensor retinaculum in my right foot (the little sheath your tendons run through on top of your foot).. which means every step running is now somewhat "uncomfortable". I think the sheath is just inflamed and so running every day isn't helping.. a small price to pay for such glory, now if I could just find a wrench so I can fix this plumbing problem in my skull.

Charles: Day 130/365 - I can't shake the injury!

I'm still suffering from the old hip injury and must've aggravated it after last nights run so I only did the minimum 5k during lunch time at work. The run was painful but when I look at my times, I'm about 3 minutes quicker over the same route than I was a couple of weeks ago so my fitness and strength is improving but the fatigue is still setting in much earlier than it used to. Must be getting old!

Charles: Day 129/365 - 366?

I had planned on doing a double run today, lunchtime and evening, but I forgot to take the Garmin watch with me this morning, doh!! Hence, my evening run consisted of the old familiar route to the wife's work but I decided to run on a bit further to her mum's house. I think that forgetting the watch put a downer on my mood so I felt exhausted tonight. I think I need a day off but no chance of that happening any time soon lol.

I got asked at work today about why we're aren't running for 366 days with it being a leap year. My answer was because its a 365 day challenge and not technically a years challenge. I still intend on running for at least the 366 days though.

Fwd:

Millie took these photos from her bedroom window on Sunday morning. We had a greenway through part of our block and it is nice to see some wildlife at this time of year, despite the fact that they eat our garden.

Day 124/365 Challenge - Carey and Smokey Ridge

It was sooo warm tonight, about 68oF when I went for my run at 8.30 pm. A bit windy but not unpleasant. Brad is in Toronto for a couple of days and still dreary up there. Might start taking the dogs with me now that the weather has warmed up. Kids have been out on the trampoline, trees are budding... Feeling like spring!!!

Marg: Day 123/365 Challenge - late night run around Carmel

Nothing much to rerport. Did not really feel like going for a run tonight as I had a food law assignment to finish that was not very interesting and it was clouding my evening. Any way once I was out it was quite nice and I enjoyed the run. I realized that the day before had been my "1/3 done day". Yeh...!!!...Any day is a milestone for me!!!

Benjours 63 & 64 - balance no more, Jupiter and venus!

Hello bloggsters - having a well earned cup of tea for a few mins and thought I'd update my blog whilst I slurp.

Anusha on-call at the weekend (feel ike I've been saying that a lot recently!!) so was able to get out after 9pm on Saturday for a quick loop around the village. Not a huge amount to report other than nice to get out by myself for 25 mins after playing entertainer to the kids all day in wife's absence!

Sunday run after 9pm again - gutted to learn battery failed on watch shortly after starting run. I wasn't going to wait for watch to charge up again before running, I was tired and hungry, so I carried on the cycle path run - I must have left watch on before using it last night - I'm not starting again!

The really nice thing about last night is that Venus and Jupiter are approaching conjunction and Venus was so bright in a clear dark sky. It felt like someone was shining a little torch down on me. I turned off my head torch for a bit and just marvelled as I ran in the dark! At bed time Oliver was stunned about how bright they were, but how small they were knowing that they're supposed to be the massive planets he sees in his books. I think he's starting to get some sense of the vastness of space - I'm thinking I might buy a telespoke!

Highlight of the weekend though was Neela cycling for the first time. Very emotional. From her little wodden balance bike (no pedals) to a pedal bike without stabilisers in one-go. She was thrilled. Anusha cross she wasn't there to share in the moment. on Saturday she saw a friend out learning to cycle (just got going too) and she was keen to have her own bike so she could try too. We've had a bike in our loft for 4 years (a neighbour gave us one) - so on Sunday Ollie and I got it down and took her out on the cycle path and within a few minutes, she was off! :-) She was out this morning with Anusha before she left for work. I'll try and sort some pics.

We then spent the afternoon at Ollie's godmothers house, building obstacle courses with her young kids in their menage - the horses were quite amused I think!

Marg: Day 122/365 Challenge - longer run through Hazel Dell and Avian Glen

Perfect running conditions this afternoon. It was calm, about 55oF and sunny with a nice sunset. Brad came with me and we ran just under 7.2 miles which has been my longest run of the challenge so far and good prep for my 1/2 marathon in May. I got a foot cramp about 2 miles from home. It was very painful and I was glad to finish although I felt great....bit like what Charles was saying the other day....it's a fine line between pleasure and pain....

Nicky Day 137/365 Grizzly 20miles

Well I dont know how, but I managed to complete todays extrememly hilly 20miler down on the Dorset coast. Mud, hills, stoney beaches etc all thrown in for luck! I actually did it nearly half an hour quicker than I did 2 years ago & that was with the darn cough.
Took my trusty MdS walking poles & they were invaluable on the hills & the slippery bits. Cough was extremely annoying & I did struggle to breathe on the many up hills, but hey! The sun shone, it was a beautiful day with stunning views & loads of specatators know doubt brought out by the weather. A good day was had by all.
Wont be blogging for a few days as off to Bonny Scotland bright & early in the morning. Staying near Aberfoyle in the Trossacks with work so hoping to get some Scottish fresh air & miles under my belt. :D
Me & my mate Jane enjoying a cup of tea before the run in the pics.

Charles: Day 127/365 - Spring is springing

Early morning start (6.10am!!) with car race marshal training at Knockhill Race Circuit and then did my run around a wee circuit near my dads in the glorious warm sunshine with a cooling breeze. Yip spring and summer has probably been and gone here in drizzly Scotland :)

Charles: Day 126/365 - 18 weeks in and still going strong

Another 10k today that was a reverse loop of yesterday's run. Totally knackered with dead heavy legs but thats me now completed a full 18 weeks of this challenge. I'm getting stronger and back to fitness, but need to lose the extra weight that I've put on lately. Any suggestions or ideas?

Nicky: Day 136/365 Upton Loop - again!

A bit bored of this loop now but I know its almost exactly 2m so its ideal for those exacting length runs! Legs felt like lead but only had one coughing bout. Had to walk up the small incline too which was a bit concerning! Still planning on doing the Grizzly tomorrow much to my hubbies horror. He is worried I get a chest infection or something & screw up my Comrades training.
I say, lets just see what tomorrow brings - I can always stop of course!!

Nicky: Day 135/365 Upton Loop

Actually managed to run 2m without gasping for breathe & having a coughing fit! Lets see how things progress before I totally commit to a tough 20m on Sunday! :D

Charles: Day 125/365 - Tough 10k

At my dads for the weekend so I decided to do a slightly longer run that involved a tough and hilly 10k. I was totally knackered but enjoyed it and had a nice hot bath when I got back. I felt the run in my legs tonight but strangely enjoyed it. I still find it weird that feeling pain, exhaustion and elation can all happen at the same time :)

Benjour Days 61 &62 - balance bikes, Flax Loop and Boringstoke

Another late-ish run last night - kids settled after Beaver scouts exploring the local woods - was quite funny watching a beaver colony come scampering out the woods all wearing their headtorches jabbering excitedly - happy days!

in the orrifice today so dashed out around the loop. it's not a bad little run to be fair and it's all off-road which is great.
Wife on-call this weekend so have no idea when I'll be able to get out for my runs on Sat and Sun, but we'll see!
Noodle is really close to her first bike - fascinating to see the different development of the kids - Ollie first rode a bike just before his 3rd birthday - Neela is now over 4!  still, neither child used stabilisers - praise be for balance bikes!

Day 116-120/365 Challenge - around Carmel, spring is coming. :)

Well I need to do a bit of catch-upwith blogging my runs: After a longer run the day before we did just a short one tonight out to Gray Rd and back. Felt good and happy with pace. Stretches and roll have been really helping my leg and butt pain! Day 116/365 Challenge by margcurtis13@hotmail.com at Garmin Connect - Details Another cul de sec crawl tonight-good way to sticky beak around the neighborhood. I like checking out what trees and shrubs other people go for in their gardens etc. Things are just starting to bud here and there are some early daffodils out. Day 117/365 Challenge by margcurtis13@hotmail.com at Garmin Connect - Details A variation on one of my runs in Smokey Ridge with a couple of loops to extend it a bit. It was a very mild night and the moon was pretty full and the sky was clear so I ran without my lamp. It was so nice to run in the moonlight. Carmel does not have many street lights so there were parts where it was just me and the moon making great shadows with some large weeping pines across the path. It was fantastic. Great to be alive. Day 118/365 Challenge by margcurtis13@hotmail.com at Garmin Connect - Details I was exhausted tonight and really did not want to go out. I had fallen asleep after Buzz's band concert (which was excellent, I must say) then woken up and got into my gear and fell asleep again and theN woke again in a panic as I thought it was morning and I had missed my run, however this was not the case and I pushed myself out the door. Not too bad once I got going. Day 119/365 Challenge by margcurtis13@hotmail.com at Garmin Connect - Details Brad came with me tonight and we ran in the daylight as the evenings are getting longer and I got home a bit earlier so that Millie could go and order her school ring.....it's an American thing... Not really my cup of tea..Feeling pretty good again. Not quite pain free but almost completely off pain killers. Day 120/365 Challenge by margcurtis13@hotmail.com at Garmin Connect - Details

Charles: Day 124/365 - For the love of food and wife ;)

Cold nights run from the house to a Musselburgh to meet the wife for a bite to eat after she finished work. Indian buffet night so I'm now walking like a stuffed penguin. The place we went to, Craig House, is where we got married :)

The details of my run can be found at Day 124/365 challenge

Nicky: Day 134 Loops around Long Sutton

Still feeling somewhat rough so went out but only for a 2m brisk walk - continue to have massive coughing bouts like a life long smoker! Got to shake this think by Sunday!! Hmmm.

Nicky : Day 133 Knole Rd

This cold just not shifting. Gone to my chest & I am struggling to breathe & run, never mind the bouts of coughing. Feel like an old wheezing steam train on a steep hill.
Alf dropped me off on the Langport Rd on the way back from food shopping & I slow trotted, fast walked home.

Benjour Days 58-60 Cycling, Scouting and LARG-ing it!

Monday night usual cycle path jaunt - they're all blending into one those runs!
Tuesday night we were running a Where's Wally event around the Scout Hut in Backwell, so was on road-watch duty and keeping scouts on the right tracks - I hadn't clocked enough miles, so after a late dinner I headed out for the last mile before retiring.
Tonight was Long Ashton Running Group (LARG) night - which I always enjoy - they're a great and varied bunch. I turned up at 7 and was the only one there so got my 5K out the way and then met up with everyone else at 7:30 for a further 6k or so - great to tackle the hills with others rather than being alone. A great work out followed by buying some onions (the glamour) and dialling into a telecon with New Zealand - time for a beer I think.
A great day.

Charles: Day 123/365 - A game of 2 runs

A day of 2 completely different runs. The first one was a lunch time run at work with the dev friends running club and I had to cut my run short because I felt sick, light headed and the pain from my hip was unbearable. The second run was another short one to go and pick up my old car (faithful commuting friend Vauxhall Astra) after it passed its MOT (My other car being a VW Golf GT Sport that I use on weekends and special occasions, and I've got the motorbike for some fun). It was freezing cold for the second run but I felt fine and put in a really good time of 8 minute miles but I still felt the old injury niggling away so its log rolling night :)

Charles: Day 121/365 - Fitness is improving :))

Running club tonight and I managed to push the pace out up the hills. I even managed to get a stitch so the old foot stomping technique came good to help clear the trapped air that causes the stitch. I'm still not back to full strength as I started to get really tired on the long uphill sections. I think the ultra sound by the physio and the spin class last week is doing wonders :)

The details of my run can be found at Day 121/365 challenge

Nicky: Day 131 Knole Rd

Not good! Have picked up or caught someone elses bugs & think I am getting a cold which is rapidly going to my chest! :(
Had hoped to do 5m this morning as part of my Comrades training schedule, but half mile in I had to walk as was struggling to breathe! Coughing spluttering & generally feeling miserable.
Put my sensible hat on (dont wear it very often) & decided to walk/run the minimal 2m. Think this is what I will have to stick with until I feel a bit better as I have a tuff 20miler this coming weekend.

Highland Fling

I am free that weekend, so would be willing to do (not all of it). On my training schedule I should be doing 60k that weekend!!!
Ben - what dya think? Can one of you Scottish guys accomodate me if I can get a cheap EasyJet flight to either Glasgow or E'burgh?

I must be nuts even thinking about this!!! :D

Charles: Day 118 to 120/365 - What have I done!!

Day 118
At my dads and a late night run. Was I looking forward to it? Was I hell as like. I struggled and plodded along and was never more happy to get back home for a nice warm shower :/

The details of my day 118 run can be found at Day 118/365 challenge

Day 119
Another run at my dads and I felt a bit better but still seemed to struggle along. Again I was happy when I got home for a shower and get a chance to vegitate in front of the tv for a few hours. I even managed to get the chance to sort out the Athlete Profiles page :)

The details of my day 119 run can be found at Day 119/365 challenge

Day 120
Motorcycle Marshal training day sponsored by Racesafe, the governing body of the British Superbikes, etc. It meant an early morning start but at least that's me allowed to continue marshaling at the BSB & club races for the next 3 years so can't wait to clean up all the bike racing crashes :)

I went for my 5k run during the lunch break and ran 2 laps of the East Fortune race circuit. It was freezing cold and I was really happy with my time, especially with gammy hip, but it was still probably the slowest ever time that someone has lapped the circuit :))

The details of my day 120 run can be found at Day 120/365 challenge

On another note, I'm running a 13 mile relay leg of the 53 mile HOKA Highland Fling race along the West Highland Way on the 28th April so I better get myself fit and get the miles in over the next few weeks.

Benjour Days 53-57 - light the pilot!

good news  - I've now got a copy of the route we used on the Scouts night hike, so will sort a way of uploading as proof.
Been a bit remiss this last five days not blogging. Wed and Thursdays were cycle path runs at night after Anusha got home - don't recall much really other than just head down crack on.

Here in London this weekend staying at in-laws place (excellent food!) Wife on a laproscopic "hand assisted" donor nephrectomy course on Friday so kids and I drove to in laws on Friday night and met Anusha there - got in about 9pm, trainers on and out into the suburban nightmare that is Orpington. Lots of kids goosing about, laughing at a pair of chicken legs wearing a head torch - I turned it up to max 600 candlepower and for some reason they stopped laughing...

Saturday was awesome - a trip to Natural History Museum and the personal highlight was the Scott Exhibition - stunned to see his actual polar diaries found next to his body. Sobering but awe inspiring; the noble courage and valour... Again, run through suburban hell sucking the life from me after we got back.

Sunday, Anusha is back in London at another course - Consultants Interview training course.. and of course, it's raining .... rattling around the house with the kids - they dashed off to church with Grandma and Grandad whilst dad grabbed a coffee and a read of the Sunday papers! (last time I did that??) highlight for Ollie was he was invited to share a reading at the pulpit with his Granddad! - Granddad very proud! Ollie had to stand on a step to see over the pulpit - would have liked to have seen that. Apparently members of the congregation were so touched by how well he read some had tears in their eyes!! :-)

Cold, wet, grey and miserable outside this afternoon - one of those afternoons where daughter falls asleep on sofa after a big lunch of string hoppers and curry, Ollie playing scrabble with Grandma and I'm thinking "to hell with going for a run in this".. just about to get comfy on the sofa and snooze with Noodle when the good old pilot light turns on...."you do know we ARE going for a run in this crappy weather don't you...."
followed by
"and the reason we're going for a run in this crappy weather is because everybody else would fall asleep on the sofa, rather than venture out in this..."

and that's all it took! Keep that pilot light burning folks!! it's in there somewhere and it's what separates this tough bunch from everyone else... just keep on going.

Will upload Garmin's when I get back to Bristol this evening.

Marg: Day 115/365 Challenge - Snowing again!

I can't believe after running in 61oF yesterday, that it is snowing today. At least the wind had died down but the wind chill was still 25oF. We did a longer run today, around Avian Glen and Clay. 6.7 miles. I felt pretty good despite the snow getting in my eyes.

Nicky: Day 129/365 Cadbury Castle & Ridges

Stunning morning & had arranged to run with 2 friends. Headed over to S.Cadbury & parked up near the ancient fortification. Up the hill, down the hill up the ridge etc etc. Lots of hills which I really tried to push myself up. My times look pretty grim on Garmin Connect but with lots of styles, fences etc to climb over, muddy fields to navigate & one or two wrong turns through brambles etc, made for a really good tiring morning out. Back to the car just as the heavens opened too. :)

Nicky: Day 128/365 Upton Loop

Popped out after work to do a quick 3 miles. After watching the Horizon programme on training I decided to incorporate 1 whole minute of sprints - 3 x 20 min bursts! I really should do this anyway as I have gotton myself into a bit of a plod along routine. Need to up the anti with regards to speed & hill work.

I've fixed the formatting of the Athletes Profile page. It's pretty basic so please let me know how you would like me to 'jazz' it up a bit?

Charles: Day 117/365 - Crazy Weather!

Another easy lunch time run today at work and the weather felt like a summers day and it's only the 1st March. The temperature was very mild, muggy and there was no wind. I can't work out the weather patterns because last year we were freezing our butts off with frost and snow everywhere. I'm guessing that we are being looked after by our guardian angels this year to help us get running outdoors and complete the challenge in a relatively mild winter either that or the end of the world is nigh :)

I volunteered my services some time ago to run a leg of the HOKA Highland Fling (along West Highland Way). The 53 miles from Milngavie to Tyndrum is split into 4 legs of varying distances and has to be completed in under 12 hours!! I've now been asked if I want to take part in the event but I'm not sure if I can (or should) because I might struggle to get fit enough in time with the dodgy hip. I'll ask the physio tomorrow for her advice :)

The details of my run can be found at Day 117/365 challenge

Nicky: Day 127/365 Parrett Trail Loop

Stunning afternoon so headed off along the River Parrett Trail. Quiet, warm, sunny. A few dog walkers out on the trail, but apart from that I had it to myself! Legs a little tired so did a nice easy jog sticking mainly to the trail with only a couple of short road sections. Perfect.
