Jack: Day 32/365...Olympic fever hits Glasgow?

This morning I set off for the first run of my second month feeling motivated and ready to tackle another 5k. Seeing the figures add up last month has really helped me to appreciate the scale of the challenge but also reinforced the idea that it is achievable. The 15hours of running last month was tough at times and fitting 5k in before work was a daunting prospect however I am now aware that I can do it and not be too tired to concentrate at work. I have been really focussed on eating well and getting plenty of sleep and, with a little help from Mr Nescafe, I have felt wide awake and alert. The knowledge that I have survived a month of this has certainly inspired the belief that it is maintainable. I must confess however that the weather has not been too much of an issue so far. It is definitely going to be harder to get up and run at 6:00am in the cold, dark winter! For now I will play along in ignorance and cross that bridge when I come to it! When running at this time of the morning you do not see many other people. You might come across the occasional dog-walker or a fellow nutter out running. It was with great surprise therefore that whilst on this mornings outing I encountered a completely new breed of early morning enthusiast. A discus-thrower! I am sure you can appreciate the surprise I received when I was striding through Kelvingrove Park and noticed a man spinning in tight circles in the centre of the ash football pitch before suddenly hurling a discus half way across the park! The gentleman's ability indicated that this was something which he had spent a lot of time practising and this got me wondering as to how long he had been there! Surely it must get boring standing in one place, throwing what is essentially a 'heavy frisbee' across a park before walking over to it and throwing it back to your start point! It was only once I was safely home and eating my porridge that I had the realisation that this man was probably thinking the same about me. He may have been standing chuckling to himself at the man in the lycra trousers who gets up at 6am to run in a big circle around an empty park. I suppose we are both as mad as each other, it's just a matter of perspective!

  1. I love your discuss thrower story. I am glad you did not find out about him through having a discuss hit you in the back of the head!
