Kayaking and picnicking on Fall Creek. Memorial Day weekend.

Marg: Day 199-204/365 Challenge - Day 200 and beyond!

Well in amongst this bunch of runs I slipped in DAY 200!!!! Wooohooo. I would never have believed that I could do this! Mostly just some of the usual runs around Carmel with one slightly longer one, which I really enjoyed. We have the "Out run the sun" race this weekend at Fort Harrison State Park. Should be fun and the weather is predicted to be very nice. Had a mix of weather over the past 6 days from very hot, 90s, to high 50s tonight. It was raining as well so we got soaked, however the garden is really saying thank you for some water!!

Nicky: Day 218 Dillington House, Somerset

Sponsoring a WsM dept away day at Dillington Hse today. Had to fit the 2m in somehow before I get picked up from home en route Heathrow, so took running shoes to work. Stepped out in my dress, make up etc plus running shoes to do the deed. Came back very hot & sweaty but done. Next 2miler in South Africa tomorrow!

Karl: Day 40-48/365

Another week has gone by. My running enthusiasm is a bit low at the moment and I haven't really go the long runs in that I wanted for the West Highland Way race.
Just a short run last Tuesday:

On Wednesday I went Mountain Biking at Glentress and then did around 10k to run to the track and coach the track session there on a lovely warm summers day. It was 27 degrees at Glentress earlier and absolutely roasting.

Thursday of last week was just a short run to a different track for another coached session under beautiful skies. First time this year that I could stand at a track on shorts and t-shirt (it is Thursday again today and it looks like the waterproof jacket is due to come out again).

Busy day working followed by a lovely evening in the park having a BBQ with friends. I squeezed in a 3k run just before we headed to the park.

My plan for the next morning was to run to Balerno to coach and then back again (10k each way) but a late evening on Friday put paid to that and I took the bus to Balerno and then ran back. We had another BBQ in the park that evening again. While the weekend for a lot of Edinburghers was dominated by running a 5k, 10k, half marathon or marathon our weekend was dominated by having BBQs ;o)

Sunday I really had lost my running mojo and with the lovely weather just wanted to go for a cycle in the sun, and that is exactly what Fiona (my OH) and I did. A nice two our loop heading south west of Edinburgh.
I did my quick 3k later that afternoon.

Last of the beautiful days: I got a bus down to Leith and started my run roughly where the Water of Leith enters the Firth of Forth. I ran along the Water of Leith all the way up to Balerno (20k) and then added a bit of a loop to make it 25k. Enjoyed that run and rewarded myself with a pint in the Grey Horse pub's beer garden enjoying the rays. I had the beer garden to myself.

Had another trip down to Glentress for more Mountain biking which I enjoyed, although I wasn't as confident as last week. In the evening I was time keeping the club time trial and ran the 5.5k there and 5.5k back. It was quite a chilly evening and I had completely seized up ahead of my run back. Found a nice android app though to help with the time keeping.

Yesterday's run was just a 3.6k to meet a client. I was planning to go longer but have not been sleeping well recently and feel that my body needs a rest, so am keeping the runs short for the moment.

Will have a bit of challenge coming up this weekend. Fiona and I are cycling from Edinburgh to Durham over 3 days and I will have to fit in the runs in those 3 days. Look forward to both though.

Nicky: Day 217 Trot around Langport

Running club evening & they were doing a 10k time trial which I usually do & really enjoy. However, with Sundays short outing looming rather too quickly I took the sensible option & did a slow job around Langport with a friend. Cheered the 18 or so runners in who did the trial. Some pretty handy times too.

Charles: Day 207/365 - Back to work :(

First day back at work after a busy and relaxing weekend. Could I be be bothered? You guessed it, NO!!!!

I did a lunchtime run and felt totally knackered and lethargic. I was pleased that it was a bit cooler but I still really struggled to get motivated.

The details of the run can be found at Day 207/365 challenge

Jack: Day 40/365

Today I decided to squeeze in a quick 5k loop of Kelvingrove park before breakfast. The run was nice enough although it soon became clear that the scorching sun of the weekend had well and truly moved on. Whilst I wouldn't go so far as to say that it was cold it was still a very different experience to the last few days. I am just hoping that we have not had our share of summer for the year! I felt strong on the run although my legs were fairly tired after a tough session at CrossFit last night. Once I had completed the run I had a nice afternoon having lunch in town with Vicki and my mates from uni followed by a trip to the cinema. We watched the new 'Snow White and the Huntsman' movie which was pretty average and certainly nothing to write home about! I am looking forward to a nice relaxing evening now with a cup of tea and a couple of episodes of Game of Thrones! Lovely!

Nicky: Day 216 Crowds Lane & Upton fields

Gorgeous evening. Went out for a swift walk after my pilates class with Alfie. Country lanes & fields. Had a sports massage this morning & my calves & achilles are very very tight. Trainer says this is probably from over use & no rest!! Oh well, only another 140 odd days to go & they can have a rest....maybe!

Nicky: Day 215 Somerton Loop

And yet another stunning day! Out relatively early to do nearly 6m. Stuck to the lanes & really enjoyed the outing. Again, several walkers & cyclists out & about & everyone seems to be smiling & cheery! Felt fine but am still concerned about the 56m of hills & roads I am going to have to contend with plus the fight against the ever ticking clock, on Sunday!

Nicky: Day 214 Cross country loop near Upton

Due to it being mega wind down time for next weeks biggie, I am incorporating a few 2m minimum walks into the challenge. Did our nice local hilly cross-country loop this evening with Alfie. Stunning views & scenary. Everyone smiling, must be the weather. Happy days!

Nicky: Day 213 Knole Loop

Another stunning day - could get used to this. What a pleasure running in shorts & vest & not worrying about any wet weather gear or long sleeves! Popped out to do my 3m Knole loop. Mainly on public footpaths which are no extrememly over grown. When the grass is thigh high I am always a little wary of grass snakes - just hope they are more scared of me. Slow going because of the grass & the herd of dairy cows I met along one of the lanes - the pleasures of living in the country. Love it.

Jack: Day 39/365

Today I decided to delay my run until later on in the evening. This would give me the time to collect my final assignment from the University (which I passed!) and sort out a few bits and pieces around campus. I decided that today I would break my run up into two sections as I would be running to and from CrossFit. For my run down to the box I decided to head along the river to avoid congestion and enjoy the warm evening. When I arrived at the box I was informed that today's WOD would be 'Helen' - a personal favourite of mine! The workout would consist of three rounds of 1x block run (approx 400m), 21x kettlebell swings (24kg) and 12x pull ups. I was really chuffed to complete the workout in 7mins 38sec which was a new personal record for me, knocking 30sec off of my previous time. Having completed the workout I jogged home back along the river to complete my exercise for the day! Whilst today was not as sunny as the last few days it was still a warm evening and very humid. The run felt ok considering I had just nailed an intense CrossFit workout and I arrived home to find an amazing dinner of Cajun chicken waiting for me. An excellent end to a good day!

Charles: Day 206/365 - Kinross

My second run and last run in Kinross (never fear, I shall return) and I did the same route as yesterday because my body ached like hell this morning. I would highly recommend Kinross and in particular the Windlestrae Hotel as a place to visit. The trails around Loch Leven are fab.

Charles: Day 205/365 - Spa Break :)

The day after my weekend exploits and it was the toughest 5k I have ever ran in my entire life. My legs were dead and I shuffled along a trail route on the banks of Loch Leven. It was warm today as well but I'm glad I did an early morning run before the heat got too much for me.

Michelle and myself are also away for a spa break in Kinross and I'm loving the pool and jacuzzie. We've also got a full body massage booked for 3.15pm and I'm so looking forward to that :)

Jack: Day 38/365...Running with Vicki

This morning looked set to be another gloriously sunny day and so Vicki decided to join me for a run. As this would be her first run in a while we decided to take it steady and follow a route up to Festival park. Vicki has chosen to follow a training program which she found on her phone and has set herself the target of being able to run 5kilometres without stopping. As today would be the first stage in this journey it consisted of several sections of running which were broken up with short walking sections. The run lasted almost half an hour and took us over the river and around the park covering almost 3.5km. Once we were back near the flat Vicki decided to jog back on her own to allow me to complete an additional 5km run along the river. This was a fairly quick run although I was stuck at traffic lights a couple of times which was frustrating! The weather made the run really enjoyable and I passed many other runners along the riverside. Having completed my runs for the day I had a lecture to attend at the University before spending my afternoon relaxing in the sun behind my flat with my book. I am still reading the fourth book in the Game of Thrones series and am thoroughly enjoying it. I am looking forward to getting plenty of reading done this week as I am now finished with my placement and will have a lot of time on my hands! I will strive to complete some longer runs as well and hope that Vicki will be able to join me for a few more!

Have one of my nursing pals over from Australia for the weekend. So as it is such a lovely evening, Carolyn was made to come out on my 2mile jaunt. Due to being in the last throws of Comrades wind down, we did a fast walk as opposed to a run. Got to get these legs in shape for my 56miler in just over a week. Stunning evening & very warm. All rounded off with an ice cold glass of sauv blanc in the pub. Summer bliss!

Jack: Day 37/365...Sunday session.

This morning was another roasting day which made the run fairly tough. It was another cheeky 5k loop of Kelvingrove which was already filling up with enthusiastic sunbathers. There was even a bouncy castle taking shape but I managed to fight the temptation of having a go and completed my run without interruption! Today would be Susie and Andy's last day and so I wanted to get back from my run fairly quickly in order to make the most of the day. We met up with them at lunchtime and popped over to the outside seating at Lebowski's for a full Scottish breakfast and some iced coffee. After a good feed we strolled over to the West End in the sun and had a wander through Kelvingrove Park which had filled up even further since my morning run! We spent the afternoon in a beer garden off Asthon Lane enjoying the sun and a couple of pear ciders. Once we had said goodbye to Andy and Susie, Vicki and I spent the remainder of the day relaxing in the Botanic Gardens with my mates from Uni. All in all it was an awesome weekend with some good running and some amazing weather! I just hope it sticks around for a while!

Jack: Day 36/365...A scorching Saturday!

This morning I was greeted with an absolute scorcher! The sun was shining through the window and I was looking forward to the prospect of a longer run enjoying the sunshine. I headed over to meet the running club for 10:45am and enjoyed a great run around the south side of the city. I had not ventured around this side of the river very much outside of travelling to and from my work placement. The run took us around a selection of parks which were all beginning to fill with sun worshippers making the most of the glorious weather. After almost an hour we found ourselves back at the gym and I jogged over to Kelvingrove Park to set things up for another 'Outside the Box' training session. After the session I had a swift shower and headed off to meet Vicki who was in town with Susan and Andy, who were also celebrating their anniversary this weekend. After a few beers in the sun and a cheeky bit of sushi we headed back to the flat for some fajitas and a few more beverages. Having covered 12km this morning it was a great 'guilt-free' night of eating and drinking.

Jack: Day 35/365...Last day of school!

This morning I woke up nice and early to squeeze in 5k before my final day of placement. Having been at the school for the majority of the last few months it was a strange feeling to be preparing myself for my last ever journey in. I decided to just stick with the simple Kelvingrove Park 5k loop as I needed to prepare the flat for Vicki coming home! Having been away running around Helsinki for the majority of last week Vicki was making a return to glorious Glasgow. As I left for my run I decided to quickly check the post box (which is tucked inside the entrance to my block of flats) as I hadn't checked it yesterday. As I stepped towards the glass-fronted door to the mail-room I was shocked to find a man lying on the floor. I could see that he was breathing and it became clear that the man had passed out after abusing a couple of aerosols which lay on the floor beside him. With the only exit to the room in which he was confined being the doorway in which I was standing I was wary about disturbing the man as, should he panic when awakened, the only way for him to run would be through me! At this point I did not know what action to take and so I resorted to the reliable fall-back option. When in doubt, phone home! I figured that my dad would know what to do and so I gave him a ring. On his advice I contacted the police who offered to send an officer over to sort things out. I realise that this probably wasn't considered an emergency however I thought that the hour it took for someone to turn up was a bit excessive. Needless to say by the time the officer arrived the man had disappeared. The run itself was less eventful as I jogged a lap of the park at a fairly standard pace.

Today also marked my two year anniversary with Vicki. I am not sure how she has managed to put up with me for the last two years but I think she was pleasantly surprised when I announced my commitment to this challenge...At least now she is guaranteed twenty minutes of peace everyday for the next year!

Charles: Day 204/365 - EMF Part 2 (UPDATED)

Today is d-day part 2 of the Edinburgh Marathon Festival - The Half Marathon

I have a huge dilemma!!! I forgot to take my Garmin Running watch to the half marathon today so I don't have an official Garmin Connect map and time for my run today. I hope I can be forgiven because I have proof of my time from the official time records and more importantly, I have the medal. I hope this is enough to convince me fellow 365'ers that I did run today.

The heat was unbearable today and I couldn't take enough water on to replace the sweat I was losing. I also had to stop for a pee just after the 8 mile point. I walked a bit between the 8 and 9 mile mark to drink 750ml of water and take 2 energy gel packs. I was fine until the turning point at about 11.5 miles and then was desperate for another drink of water. I walked for a wee bit once I got another 500ml of water and then plodded on to the finish. I managed a huge sprint to the finish line and must've overtaken about 100 runners but I'm still hugely disappointed with my time but after my tough 10k yesterday and the unbearable heat this weekend I think I should be proud of myself but I still feel gutted that I didn't do as well today and that I forgot my watch!

Charles: Day 203/365 - EMF Part 1

Today is d-day part 1 of the Edinburgh Marathon Festival - The 10k!!

Firstly it wasn't ideal running conditions for a 10k race. It was already over 20 degrees Celcius at 9am in the morning (the start of the race). The sun was strong and beating down and it was getting warmer. The organisers only had one water station at the 6k mark and everybody was desperate for a drink. The route was exceptionally tough with some serious hill climbs but I managed to keep to my target of doing a slow 10k to conserve my energies for tomorrows half marathon.

I was fairly fresh when I finished the race but I was so desperate for a drink that I downed 2 500ml bottles of water as soon as I finished. I must've lost about a stone in weight with all the sweat that was pouring out of me.

The details of the run can be found at Day 203/365 challenge

Charles: Day 202/365 - Short run before d-day

A short easy 5k to the wife's work because Saturday is the start of my big weekend - 10k on Saturday and Half Marathon on the Sunday. It was boiling hot and I spent loads of time looking for some shade to run under. I was also sweating buckets and my mouth was so dry that I couldn't swallow and my mouth was sticking together.

Brad was back today and we did one of our usual runs around the block. It was quite hot today, a bit over 90oF and humid! So we left it until about 9:30 when it had dropped to 75oF before we got out there. We were very thankful to be able to jump straight into the pool whea we got back!

Day 197/365 Challenge - pizza on the Monon and ice cream in old town.

To celebrate finishing school I took the kids to a great pizza place on the Monon trail in old town Carmel. It was great to sit outside and watch all the people around. It was so busy with kids and dogs, bikes, runners, older people, families and couples and there was a atmosphere of anticipation for what was in store over the summer that was almost contagious. We finished off the treat with an icecream at Huddles. It was sunny, summery and quintessential Carmel. The kids loved it. Run was just the minimum to Gray Rd and back.

Marg: Day 189-196/365 Challenge - summer break starts and Marg turns over a new leaf in footwear.

I cannot believe how many days have gone by since I last blogged. I have caught moments to read it an keep up with where everyone is up to but just to do my own has not been something I have had time for. Work has been busy, Brad has been in Germany and Belgium for the week....he should have tried to catch you for a run while he was there Ben!! And the kids have had all sorts of things on for their last week of school as well as a bunch of health and dental checkups seemed to fall in the week as well. Now the kids are in their long awaited summer break...nearly 12 weeks off from school!!

Needless to say some of my runs have just been close to the minimum and late at night, however I have tried to get in a few 4 milers, making my average still a bit over 3/day. I have booked my next 1/2 marathon in Sept to keep me motivated. It is women only. I am not a fan at all of segregated running, not after how long it took for women to be allowed to run in competitive long distance racing. It does not seem right to not allow men to run in a race as well however this is midwest America and there are still a few quirky things here. Brad is not up for another mini this year anyway. There are also a couple of sprint tris that I want to fit in over the summer as well.

Took the plunge the other day and had my feet looked at by a podiatrist. I knew it was not going to be good as RA gradually makes its mark despite great treatment. Long story short is that I get custom orthotics in a few weeks. Bit depressed by it as it always seemed to me to be what old ladies have to wear. Also horrified the podiatrist by telling her about the shoes I wear to work which has ended up with me sending my high heels to "Good Will" and buying "sensible shoes". Managed to find some that we're not too grandmotherly so I am feeling OK again now.

Jack: Day 34/365...You snooze, you lose!

This morning I came close to missing my run. I could try to blame it on the alarm function of my mobile phone or on the heat which kept me awake for most of the night but, at the end of the day, the only valid reason for my near miss was my own laziness. This morning was the first one of the challenge so far during which I have fallen into the trap found on most common alarm clocks which comes in the form of a small button innocently labelled 'snooze'. After a long month of waking early every morning and running 5k before heading off to work this function has been steadily growing in appeal. The idea of rolling back over to 'snooze' has, in recent days, been extremely appealing. This is how I found myself finally succumbing to the button which promises so much and yet delivers so little. After all having already been jolted awake by the screaming tones of my alarm, and scared half to death in the process, 5 extra minutes of sleep is hardly the bliss which it claims to be! Perhaps this is the reason that this morning, when attempting to hit 'snooze' my hand actually reached out and selected 'dismiss'. Even my hand knew that snoozing was not a viable option! It was with a great shock then when I awoke an hour later and wondered why it was so light at my window! Fortunately it was still only 6:45 and the panic which hit me ensured that I managed to race out of bed, around the park and back into my shower without even pausing to consider an alternative. Looking back I could probably have given the 'pre-work run' a miss and simply gone after work however at 7:00 in the morning this didn't cross my mind. Another beautifully sunny morning met me as I hovered in the car park outside my flat while my Garmin took forever to locate the satellite signal and after a few minutes of standing around awkwardly I was able to commence the run. Due to returning to the slightly later hour today I bumped into a couple of familiar faces in the park (which was still overflowing with rubbish!) and I enjoyed the route. A good evening at CrossFit tonight working on ring-dips, kb swings and goblet squats promise aching quads tomorrow morning! Hopefully a good deal of stretching them tonight will assist recovery. I am off to bed now and I will be double checking my alarm before I go to sleep! From now on 'snoozing' is not an option...

Nicky: Day 211 Knole Loop 3.8m

Weather in Somerset has been chilly & murky all day. Doesnt it really annoy you when the radio 2 guys keep going on about the stunning hot & sunny weather when you are sat with the heating on, jeans & sweat-shirt! Still, I was rewarded when the sun eventually appeared at around 3pm! Did a couple of hours gardening - amazing how the weeds take over when you are away on holiday! When Alfie got back from his day in Birmingham we popped out to do a slow 3.5miler. Lovely warm  evening. Trotted down to Knole & instead of the out & back decided to do the loop around the knole for a change. With all this glorious sunshine this week we expected the trail to have dried out but it did get so  muddy at one point that we turned around & crossed a very over grown foot path to head home across the fields. Very peaty around here so I had to spend some time scrubbing our shoes before running them thro the washing machine!!!
All very pleasant though.

Benjour 136 LA foray by ben_buckle at Garmin Connect - Details

hot and sticky today.. cracking evening with lots of sunshine, but very close (not Indiana close(ie 95%!) but felt close to that close nonetheless!) :-)

knees sore from yesterday morning sojourn in Berlin with new friends from Boehringer..

bought a new book from Clayton Christensen "how will you measure your life" which a lot of folks in the business world are raving about.. knew I would need something to distract me on the run this evening so managed to track down a podcast on this topic from his address at an HBS commencement speech in 2010 - read by some monotone US theologist using it for other purposes, so it grated on the ear a lot, but boy was it utter garbage/shocking!! I will read the book, but now I'm not as expectant as I was!

In other news I'm REALLY enjoying Kissinger's book "On China" - beautifully written and readily accessible.. stunning. I'm hoping the knowledge it imparts will serve me well in the coming years, professionally.

Charles: Day 201/365 - I'm melting

It was roasting hot today and I struggled. I drank 500ml of powerade during my 5k and I still felt dehydrated by the end. My legs and feet were killing me with the old trainers but the good news is that my new ones have arrived in the post so I need to wear them all day tomorrow and use them in my 5k in a last minute attempt to break them in before my 2 big runs this weekend :)

Running club this evening. Fantastic turn out, probably because of the weather. I was with the slower group & we decided to do a steady 5miler. Really enjoyed it. Legs actually coming around now - think due to the slow pace. Lovely run. Hope I am on the mend in prep for The Comrades which is looming far to quickly!

Jack: Day 33/365...A rubbish run!

Last night as I walked back home, having spent a couple of hours attempting to accompany my mate Jenny's piano playing with my guitar, I decided to take the scenic route back through Kelvingrove park. It had been a gorgeous day and the park was still full of people out with barbecues and the odd beverage. As it was now about 9:30pm those who remained were decidedly worse for wear and, as my guitar was swinging by my side, I had several requests for a sing-a-long. I decided against such a plan and laughed off the requests as I made a swift exit. One thing that caused my to stop however was the state of the park. As I turned the corner and walked alongside the bottom of the grassy slope area I was shocked by the volume of rubbish that had been left completely covering the grass. Empty boxes of beer and disposable bbqs had simply been left where they lay and you would have been hard pushed to find space to sit down on the grass without having to move a bottle of Bucky or two! As I ran through the park this morning then it was hardly surprising that the mess was even worse than when I had seen it last night. The 5 kilometres flew by and I couldn't help but feel sorry for the people who would have to come and clean it up as well as feel ashamed of the fact that a large number of those who had been in the park would have been students at my University.

I realised this evening that I should probably start including my jogs to and from CrossFit on this blog also. I go three times a week and rack up an extra couple of miles each time. I suppose over the course of a year it will all add up! As of tomorrow I will make sure that I take the Garmin and see what it comes up with!

Charles: Day 200/365 - 54.79%

Day 200 and 1425km (885 miles) and I'm still going strong!

That's me 54.79% of my way through this challenge and I'm still loving it, even though my legs are hurting like hell and I'm still waiting on my new trainers to arrive. I'm desperate for new trainers to arrive because I need to get them broken in for my 10k on Saturday and half marathon on Sunday....I might even have to take desperate measures and go to the shops and pay the over the odds price for a new pair.

The details of the run can be found at Day 200/365 challenge

Charles: Day 199/365 - Yaffa Bassa

I had a physio session and a sports massage today plus it was really warm and sunny when I went for my run. To say I was in a lot of pain is an understatement because the massage on my legs was agony as my calf muscles got some serious abuse. This made the run really uncomfortable and I was never more glad than when it was over.

The details of the run can be found at Day 199/365 challenge

Nicky: Day 209 Upton Loop

Another whizz around my little 2m Upton Loop. Legs still feel very tired & I am even struggling up the very small incline. Hoping that this is just post holiday fatigue! Getting a little concerned as I have a rather large little race to contend with in less than a fortnight. Think I may blow out half way through although I hope not!! Think I will lay off the alcohol, up the pasta, go to bed earlier, work less & generally try & get the old bones a little more into this serious "you have an event" mode.

Bentag - 134 &135 - Tiergarten

two great runs again through the Tiergarten, one last night and one this morning... nice to get out each time and this morning I was able to hook up with a couple of people from Boehringer Ingelheim, one of which read his DVM in Berlin, so he knew the routes. Went over to Brandenberger Tor and the Reichstag building... was great just bimbling around... pace was a bit slower than normal this morning though and my knees now feel like they've been hit by baseball bats... ouch!

Berlin is a fantastic city... great to explore it by running about a bit!

Jack: Day 32/365...Olympic fever hits Glasgow?

This morning I set off for the first run of my second month feeling motivated and ready to tackle another 5k. Seeing the figures add up last month has really helped me to appreciate the scale of the challenge but also reinforced the idea that it is achievable. The 15hours of running last month was tough at times and fitting 5k in before work was a daunting prospect however I am now aware that I can do it and not be too tired to concentrate at work. I have been really focussed on eating well and getting plenty of sleep and, with a little help from Mr Nescafe, I have felt wide awake and alert. The knowledge that I have survived a month of this has certainly inspired the belief that it is maintainable. I must confess however that the weather has not been too much of an issue so far. It is definitely going to be harder to get up and run at 6:00am in the cold, dark winter! For now I will play along in ignorance and cross that bridge when I come to it! When running at this time of the morning you do not see many other people. You might come across the occasional dog-walker or a fellow nutter out running. It was with great surprise therefore that whilst on this mornings outing I encountered a completely new breed of early morning enthusiast. A discus-thrower! I am sure you can appreciate the surprise I received when I was striding through Kelvingrove Park and noticed a man spinning in tight circles in the centre of the ash football pitch before suddenly hurling a discus half way across the park! The gentleman's ability indicated that this was something which he had spent a lot of time practising and this got me wondering as to how long he had been there! Surely it must get boring standing in one place, throwing what is essentially a 'heavy frisbee' across a park before walking over to it and throwing it back to your start point! It was only once I was safely home and eating my porridge that I had the realisation that this man was probably thinking the same about me. He may have been standing chuckling to himself at the man in the lycra trousers who gets up at 6am to run in a big circle around an empty park. I suppose we are both as mad as each other, it's just a matter of perspective!

... followed by 3 days of running long:
Saturday I ran 10k up to Balerno to do some coaching, legs felt so much better to a week ago. After coaching I ran back home another 10k. Then I was invited for coffee and cake at one of my clients at 11:30am so I ran there (around 2.5k). From there I ran down to Leith for more coaching (around 8.5k). And finally ran home again (6k). By now it was 3:30pm and I could settle down to watch the days Giro stage. I fell asleep. I recorded it all as one run for the day on the Garmin.

Sunday I went for a 27k run in the Pentland hills on the tired legs from Saturday. I covered over 600m of ascent and got some fantastic views.

Legs felt good tired early on, then started to feel good and suffered a bit at the end. Really good run on tired legs though and I was able to stay out of the way of the celebrating Hearts fans piling out of various pubs after the Scottish Cup win.

Day 3 of running on tired legs. Had a coaches meeting at 5:30pm yesterday at the Commie Pool so decided to run there via some of the Edinburgh hills taking in Craiglockhart, Braids, Blackford Glen and the Hermitage. 14k to get to the Commie Pool. After the meeting I ran round Arthur's seat with some club mates (5k) then coached the swim session and ran home afterwards (4k). Those 4k were the fastest I did in these 3 days as I was running with one of my mates Tony and he was seriously pushing the pace. Rather pleased with that finish. We were running at 4:30 min/km pace.

Charles: Day 198/365 - Dalkeith Country Park

Running club tonight and it was an off road foray into the lovely Dalkeith Country Park. The run was enjoyable and muddy at bits but the heat on this gorgeous sunny day was a little too much and I melted. My legs were dead and I just seemed to lack a spring in my step and I'm still putting it down to knackered trainers causing me knee and ankle problems. Never mind I've got a physio appointment and a sports massage booked for tomorrow

Benjour 133 - Hello to Berlin (not goodbye!)

Got to Berlin late afternoon after an uneventful flight - just how I like them... I was Hank Marvin when I got in so had a pastrami on foccacia in the hotel washed down with a couple of cokes... walked them off for an hour in the environs of the hotel... by chance am staying close to the zoo - where as a family we stayed a few years back one xmas enjoying the famed xmas markets.. great to be back and tune in to the feel of the place... went out for a great run through the South-West corner of Tiergarten... might try the whole park either on Tues or Wednesday.. a bit spooky through the less populated woody bits of the park... lots of young men loitering about, doing what young men do in Berlin in the woods late afternoon... a bit seedy, but still enough runners about at that time of the evening to keep them on their toes. the naked old guy sunbathing in the middle of a sheltered glade did make me laugh it must be said... only in Berlin! will upload Garmin when I get home.

Jack: Day 31/365...First month down!

This morning marked the first month complete of my run365 challenge! Over the last thirty one days of running I have covered 188km in just over 15hrs. It feels good to have completed the first chapter of the challenge and it has definitely inspired confidence in my ability to maintain it for the entire year. My fitness levels are possibly the highest they have ever been and I am looking forward to taking on some races in order to put this to the test. Despite the milestone that this mornings run  represented the route itself was nothing spectacular. I completed a simple 5k loop of Kelvingrove park and the morning sun was a welcome surprise when I left the flat! I just hope the good weather this morning is a sign of things to come! Today also marked the start of my final week of placement. One more week as a 'student-teacher' in my current school before heading back for a couple of weeks of lectures and then an amazing summer break! Winner!

Hi all Dunno what's happened to the blog page but I'll have a look tomorrow night to try and fix it. Cheers, Charles

Benjours 130-132 - Brecon Beacon weekend!

Friday left just enough time for a dash along the cycle path before collecting Ollie from Judo - the only diff was that having thought I'd pressed the start button, it turned out I hadn't! - merde alors.. I was listening to a repeat of the Johnnie Walker podcast with Ken Robinson whilst warming up and during the run and didn't notice the absence of buzzing every mile...
Friday night and the girls were heading over to London for the ballet - Sleeping Beauty by the English National Ballet on Saturday morning - specifically for kids.. Noodle went in her pink tutu and ballet shoes (she doesn't even do ballet (yet!)) - loved it apparently.. some boys there too which is great (Ken Robinson!).

In the mean time, Ollie and I went camping for the weekend in the Brecon Beacons... Saturday we went up Pen Y Fan and Cribyn and back down Bryn Teg, a fantastic circular 7 mile route - one that would have been even better if we could have seen the landscape, were it not for the mist! - the Fan's you continue to tease! lots and lots of mist... Ollie did really well considering the cumulative climbing.. zoom in on satellite setting and you get a sense of the Fan's if you've not had the pleasure of coughing your guts up on them whilst yomping with a heavy bergen!

Benjour Day 131 - Pen Y Fan

Today was spent sorting out camping kit, cleaning VW transporter and going to a car show at Ollie's school for a few hours.. lots of expensive Ferrari's/Aston's etc... he was in his element, me less so, but for him it made a fantastic finish to a great weekend... he's knackered now and therefore a bit grumpy!

Really enjoying Nicky's Thailand experience - feel like I'm living every day with you!

Nicky: Day 205-207 Thailand to Crewkerne 10k

Last day in Thailand. Did the little 2m circuit. At last saw a live snake after all the dead ones on the road. Alf actually nearly trod on it as it was dozing in the morning sun! Another baking day in paradise but no doube I will be moaning about the wet & cold in Blighty tomorrow. Boo!!!

Day 206 Upton Circuit - back to reality by knickerscat at Garmin Connect - Details
Landed at 6am this morning. Drove home, collected cats, unpacked, washing on, read emails & then dragged myself out for my usual boring old 2m Upton circuit. It is still as dull as it was 2 wks ago. Still, must admit, weather devine for running! Didnt even break a sweat once - maybe should have pushed myself harder!

Day 207 Crewkerne 10k by knickerscat at Garmin Connect - DetailsNot a bad day for a race weather wise. Cool & dry. Lovely change to the humidity & unbearable heat of Thailand. Also need to start working off those holiday cocktails! Found out yesterday that it was the Crewkerne 10k today - nice & local so would be silly not to do it. This race has in the last 2 years replaced the old Crewkerne 9m race, which due to dwindling numbers switched distances. I did the 9m three years ago so new if the 10k was following most of the route - twas going to be a hilly little run. Told myself I would be happy with sub 55min.
Set off slowly feeling sluggish & heavy legged. Pretty much started on a nasty hill! Ouch!! Settled into it after a mile or so & felt fine. Over took several teenage boys who obviously thought a mere 6m would be a walk in the park but burnt themselves out after 3 or so miles. I love seeing their faces when this old lady (me!!) rips past them when they are walking :D
I finished in 55:05 so was pretty delighted. Good days work me thinks.

Charles: Day 196 & 197/365 - I need new trainers!!

Two days and two completely different runs but one conclusion. I badly need another pair of new trainers!!!

My knees, ankles and feet are killing me and I put it down to the £100 Saucony Hurricane 14 trainers. They are less than 6 weeks old and they've only done just over 200 miles but they are totally knackered and are not providing any support. The soles are almost worn right through. This shouldn't happen so quickly to a £100 pair of trainers. They are great when new but I would recommend that you avoid them because they're definitely not value for money and I'll be writing to Saucony to complain.

I'll be buying cheap trainers in future!

Jack: Day 30/365...A Blue Day!

Much to the disappointment of my Dad I am not a Chelsea fan. When I first revealed an interest in football my Dad, a devout fan of 'The Blues', made the mistake of informing me that my local team were technically Crystal Palace. That fateful conversation led to a childhood filled with relegation battles, promotion dreams and even administration. It is funny to think that had my Dad not made me aware of the proximity of Selhurst Park to our family home I would have had a very different experience of football altogether! Had I been a Chelsea fan then last night would have undoubtedly been the peak of my football experiences. Nevertheless I found myself last night as a Londoner, an Englishman and the 'odd-one-out' in a family of Chelsea fans, cheering for the Blues against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final! Despite being the underdogs throughout the tournament, and with a caretaker manager at the helm, Chelsea finally achieved Mr Abramovich's dream and took home the coveted trophy. This was made sweeter by the fact that the final saw an English side defeat their German opposition on penalties! It was perhaps apt then that this morning I awoke to a blue sky at my window. After yesterday's hill session I was keen to just have a short run today and so headed along the river for a 5k loop. My knee started to ache again which was frustrating but I think this may have been caused by the strenuous run of yesterday. It was probably wise to keep today a short one! The riverside was filled with people out running today and enjoying the weather. I even saw one man sunbathing on the grass beside the Clyde...well he was either sunbathing or drunk! Maybe both! Apart from the ache in my knee it was a nice run and I am just a little gutted that I won't get to spend any more of the day out in the sun! Instead I will be sat at my desk marking essays on 'Frankenstein', reports on the Olympic Games and a selection of ghost stories!

Jack: Day 29/365...Run to the hills!

What better way to start a weekend than a Saturday hill session! This morning I met up with Tony and the gang and set off with the running club. For some reason it took my Garmin absolutely ages to lock onto the satellites and so it wasn't until we had hit the steps outside Hillhead primary school that I actually started to register my run. I checked with Tony and he had been having similar problems but had managed to clock a couple of kilometres by now and so I could probably add 2k at least to the distance recorded on my own Garmin. Once in Kelvingrove park we raced a lap of the triangle and I crossed the line in 1min 7secs. Hill reps on various inclines built up to the main challenge of the outing. I had never seen Gardner Street before, let alone ran up it. Six (and a bonus half!!) reps of the hill later and I will not be forgetting it in a hurry! It was an absolute beast of a hill which I will definitely be running again, but maybe not in the near future! As we passed through Kelvingrove Park again on the way home we did another race of the triangle. This time I decided to ditch the bag which I had been carrying for the run and I managed to knock 6 seconds off my previous time to cross the line in 1:01. Finishing the run back at the gym I then had a steady jog back to the park with Tony to set up week two of Outside The Box. A good session in the park was in order and the weather was great for it again! The only slight distraction was the call of "Hello Mr Arnold!!" from one of my first year pupils who was walking past with his dog! I may have some explaining to do come Monday morning!!

Main road on the island is pretty much a 12m loop. Decided this morning to run round the whole thing - hotel staff thought I was mad due to the heat & hills at the beginning. I assured them that good old Alf was coming on the bike to pick me up should I flake out! Tchoe!! early hills nearly killed me but hey, the rest was pretty flat. Met some water buffalo on the way & a cat riding on a motorbike with its owner - only in Thailand! Great little circuit. Was offered a lift by several locals on their tuk tuks who obviously thought I should not be running. Made it to a little bar about 5 mins walk from our hotel at the end of the run & rehydrated with an ice cold Singha beer which lasted all of around 2 mins, washed down with 2 cocktails! What a way to rehydrate: well I am on holiday!! :D

Charles: Day 195/365 - Oink, oink!

Another run in the freezing cold rain but felt not too bad. Dreading tomorrows run because I went for dinner with Michelle tonight and currently feeling like a stuffed pig after my pea soup starter, Chicken Rob Roy main and sticky toffee pudding with custard for pudding. Jings, crivvens, help ma boab I can't move :)

The details of the run can be found at Day 195/365 challenge

Jack: Day 28/365

This morning was not the most enjoyable run in the world. A miserable mix of rain and a bitterly cold wind ensured that it was 5kilometres of keeping my head down and attempting to keep my hood from falling. The park was empty apart from two large dogs who kept me company for a few hundred yards before turning tail and headed off in search of their owner...or perhaps some shelter! I am really enjoying running in my new shoes. It's amazing how comfy a new pair of running shoes can feel when you have been pounding the streets in  an old, used pair. I decided to wear the old shoes down to CrossFit last night as I didn't want to ruin the new ones straight away! I couldn't believe how much impact I could feel through the sole and was amazed that I had put up with them for so long. I had definitely been due a new pair!

Benjour 129 - LA foray

Benjour 129 - LA foray by ben_buckle at Garmin Connect - Details

managed to grab 30 mins after wife finished work and took Oliver and his felow Beavers scouts on a walk through the woods, before I collected Pootle from nursery... finalising a slide deck today for a presentation I'm giving at a conference in Berlin on Tues next week -

I love Berlin, esp the old Eastern side,, Isherwood really captured 1930's Berlin for me and parts of it I don't think will have changed much in the intervening years... Berlin was the step up to marathon running for me back in 1998. Somehwat ironically I didn't finish the race.. I'd trained to a 3hr pace and was uber fit (auf Deutsch!) and then shortly before the race I made the rookie error of switching to new shoes that had an orthotic correction in them which of course did their job and knackered my right knee.. I lasted 10 miles before I could no longer feel my leg and lost control of it! I didn't run again for 3 years...

Very much looking forward to running in Berlin on Monday, Tues and Wednesday..

Jack: Day 27/365...Dad's birthday!

This morning I continued with my early morning efforts and managed the 5k jog around Kelvingrove Park without too much bother. The knee felt absolutely fine and I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will stay that way! I said goodbye to Vicki this morning as she was heading off for a 'conference' in Helsinki which apparently also requires three days of sightseeing! It is alright for some! Today was also my dads birthday and I realised that I had forgotten to stick his present in the post. I wouldn't get a chance to get it done today and so I phoned home and explained that he would have to wait! I had another day at school filled with lots of marking and administration and then jogged over to CrossFit for the early evening session which contained box jumps, Power Snatch and 'toes to bars'. All in all it was a good day although I think I might regret the box jumps when it comes to tomorrows running session. My quads are aching at the prospect!

Day 28/365 - run to the pub :-) by kfzeiner at Garmin Connect - Details

A friend of mine, Michael Novicki, started running from London to Edinburgh on 29 April. Last Friday was day 13 of 15 days of running for him. I joined him for the 13th leg of his journey, a 26km run.

Plan for the today was to run to and from the coaching session at Balerno High School. I set off on a easy run at 6:15am but it turned into one of my most painful slogs in recent times. By the time I got to Balerno 1 hour and 10k later my knees hurt as if they had just done a 40 mile run over lots of hills. I am suprised that the 26 k the previous day took that much out of them. I got a lift down the road after coaching.

Support run #2 for Michael for part of his final leg into Edinburgh. Fiona (my OH) and I tried to join them at he Commie Pool but they (he had a number of runners with him from Peebles with more joining during the day), were going too fast. So we chased them round town to finally bump into them on the Royal Mile just below the castle. Just in time for this picture too.

Michael finished his final day (26 miles) in just over 5 hours!
My knees felt better today.

Another run to the Commie Pool for some coaching. This run had some pace for a change.

Shorter run to a planning meeting with one of the other coaches. Legs tired again or just not warmed up yet.

Quick run round the Pentland hills while others (incl. Fiona and some of my coached athletes) were swimming in Threipmuir reservoir. The water temperature was apparently a balmy 8.8 degrees. Brrr.

Run felt much better, I so prefer off road running.

Benjour 127 and 128 - Gastric flux

Benjour 127 - LA quickie by ben_buckle at Garmin Connect - Details

Bit of a weird one yesterday and today.. right ankle as stiff as a board and try as I might it would not loosen up before last nights run - had to leave it late since I'd not had the opportunity to go for a run until after Scouts... spent about 10 minutes on ankle rotations before running (yawn) but it did absolutely nothing... limping the whole way.. and to make things more lively there was def something gastric going on  - stomach had been gurgling all afternoon and I was keen to get to the porcelain immediately afterwards so had to cut the run short in fear of soiling myself!

Woke up this morning (Ollie's 7th birthday - love you son!) feeling decidedly unwell... a stove-top coffeee did not help in hindsight... thought I was going to barf over his birthday presents! - spent the whole day in a bit of a mess with repeated trips to the john - felt washed out to say the least.. had to sack it at lunchtime and just go to bed for about 4 hours and ride the intestinal writhing..

quite an interesting one.. wife dropped son at a friends party on Sunday... friends little brother had some gastric thing going on - mother decides to hold party anyway... Anusha has been soldiering on these last few days with "digestive confusion" subsequently .. her boss get's sick yesterday.... as a consequence they have to bump the transplant of a kidney into a kid from a dad that both of which have flown in from "Las Malvinas" to have - because the operating team are unwell! talk about laws of unintended consequences... funny thing was Ollie only went to the latter half of the party since the rest of them were watching Tintin the movie for the first half and he doesn't like gunfire/scared... poor Anusha, her boss and now me get a good dose of the squits and some poor kid gets a delayed transplant as a consequence... anyway, by this evening I'd bounced back and even listened to a podcast from Sir Ken Robinson on my run.. what a geezer! Phew!

Charles: Day 193/365 - Is cutting the grass a good warm-up?

I managed to get the grass cut tonight for the first time since March 25th. Let's just say it was needing a wee trim. The cuttings filled half the large brown garden waste wheelie bin!

I used the grass cutting foray as a warm up before running to meet the wife so I could get a lift home. I'm sure the pre-run exercise was a good way of stretching the tired and stiff muscles.

The details of the run can be found at Day 193/365 challenge

Jack: Day 26/365...Another early one.

After enjoying the leisurely morning that I had yesterday, getting up an hour before my alarm was due to wake me, I decided to embrace the early morning wake up call and set my alarm to the earlier time of 6am. Waking up wasn't too much bother and I was shortly out the door and striding towards the park. An easy 5k loop of the park was all I fancied this morning and I enjoyed it in the relatively nice weather. The knee is definitely clearing up now which is a relief and which also means that upcoming races could be a distinct possibility. Having completed the morning run I enjoyed the remainder of my morning before having to head in to the school. This evening I jogged down to CrossFit, after having taken a few days off, and I thoroughly enjoyed being back in the mix of things with some heavy back squats and some rowing being the order of the day. A swift jog home to find that Vicki had a massive portion of Spag Bol waiting for me was an added bonus to a good day!

Marg: Day 186-188/ Challenge - short runs close to home

Nothing much to report on these runs. Sunday was my Mothers Day run and Brad came with me. Monday was a fantastic night for a run and tonight I had been out for a work dinner and the last thing I wanted to do was go running. To top it off I tripped over and ended up with deep grazes on my palm and knee and I had to hobble home. :(

Jack: Day 25/365...Early start?

This morning I had one of those rare experiences of waking up before my alarm and feeling wide awake and ready for the day. I looked at the clock and, at 5:45 I decided that rather than head back to sleep I would venture out for my morning 5k and then enjoy a leisurely hour before having to leave for work. Today was to be the day of my final assessed lesson and so the extra time in the morning would be handy for last minute checks to lesson plans and resources. I was out the door and pounding the streets just after 6am. Today I followed my 5k route around Kelvingrove Park which was enjoyable although I did not see the usual crowd of runners and dog-walkers due to my early start. My knee was no problem whatsoever until the final kilometre when I started to feel an ache again. I think the trainers must be helping to gradually ease the problem!
