273/365 Manic Monday 5K by Big Kev

273/365 Manic Monday 5K by Big Kev

I am going to keep it short today as its been a full on day. So much has been completed it would take just too long to list it all and I will therefore save you all from the long list. It is safe to say that following the running exploits of the weekend todays run was going to a minimum distance and I was going to take it a little easier.

I have also reached the end of another month and with it comes the stats: I have covered 144.73 miles in 18:27:16 giving an average pace of 7:36/mile. The running total is 1240.62 miles in 160:00:13 at a pace of 7:44/mile.  I haven't yet worked out where this would get me if I set off from home and covered this distance, but I am guessing I would be in the Eurozone somewhere.

Additionally tomorrow is another milestone as it will be just 3 calendar months left, meaning three quarters of the challenge has been completed. Wow!

Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement, physical support and financial sponsorship. It really is appreciated.

Here is to the homeward leg.

272/365 A perfectly paced day and a prize as well 10 miles! by Big Kev

272/365 A perfectly paced day and a prize as well 10 miles! by Big Kev

Today's run was the Oldbury power station 10 mile race and prizes have been won! This race had been planned to provide me with a guide on what pace I could comfortably maintain for next weeks Cardiff half Marathon. Marcus and I had discussed the race and pace yesterday and agreed that we would look to maintain 6:40's where possible.

The preparations for the race had gone well, I was able to get a decent breakfast inside me and even a cup of strong coffee. No sooner than breakfast was done, than Marcus turned up ready for us to set off.

After a short drive we are at the Oldbury power station and have both signed in. A few 'good morning's' later to our fellow runners and we are off. We watch the elite disappear into the distance as this race is mostly frequented by club runners and not just those out for the pleasure of running without a goal. We cover the first few miles at exactly the agreed pace and both feel good. Slowly but surely we are also passing runners in one by one. We have just about perfect conditions on route and whilst it is not the most spectacular route, the ability to measure your effort and be rewarded with a consistent pace is exactly what I was looking for.

Miles 5 and 6 lead us to take on some gels for fuel and we both noted the increase in energy. Marcus digs in for the next few miles as he has already raced this week at the Weston Prom. So I offer a little help in the form of a resplendent wind break, as we enter a head wind, draped in my Macmillan t-shirt. Miles 7 and 8 allow me to lift the pace a little and as a consequence we are building a buffer on the agreed pace. Finally we hit miles 9 and 10 and go all out. I cross the line a little in front of Marcus and I am very pleased with my 65:55.

Marcus and I then meet up with a few other runners to swap notes on the run and then we head back to the truck on a warm down run. At this point we are happy that the weather has behaved and the miles have been covered at slightly better than our agreed pace. What we are both unaware of is that we have both won a prize each!

The Oldbury Power Station 10 Mile race is part of the Avon Athletics championship and as Marcus and I are both eligible runners we were entered into the competition. I have won the Male Vet 40 category and Marcus has come 2nd. Gold and Silver medal as a reward, a perfectly paced day, boom!

271/365 A steady parkrun (right!) 5K by Big Kev

271/365 A steady parkrun (right!) 5K by Big Kev

The plan for this morning was to take it easy as I would like to have a good tempo run at the Oldbury 10 miler tomorrow. Well I met up with Marcus this morning and the plan was set to run circa 21:00 minutes. It was a big event for several people today and there were two of note and deserve a mention. Firstly, Alison Engledew was our first Ashton Court lady parkrunner to reach 100 park runs, what an amazing achievement, well done. Secondly, an acknowledgement and an apology goes out to Mike Warren for his hard fought new PB. The acknowledgement that any PB at Ashton court is hard work and an apology for the harassment (encouragement) Marcus and I gave him on the way to the finish line, Well done Mike.

So the day is in front of me now and I have a bit of work to do this afternoon and then its party time. Lauren's 30th birthday celebrations are finally coming to the end of the month long tour and we have the big party tonight at Gold Brick house as the conclusion.  Bring it on.

94 day to go an counting!

270/365 It's Friday!!!!! 5K by Big Kev

270/365 It's Friday!!!!! 5K by Big Kev

Well that's another working week finished, just in time for the working weekend, hooray!!!

Tonight's run was instigated by Tina and suitably encouraged by Jess, as I was completely unaware of the time whilst sat at my desk at home. I had been working on a report and got so caught up in it, I had to be reminded that it was 6:00 pm and the troops were hungry. So, get my ass outside and get the run done so we can all eat! All done in a supportive manner of course.

I didn't need telling twice, so with a quick change completed I was out the door and covering the miles. I headed down into Ham Green and down towards the lake. Once there it was about turn and back up the hill to home, done.

On arriving home I could smell the delights of Tina's homemade oriental beef stir fry, get in!

A suitably quick man shower later and I am down and ready for an early dinner. Just for note, a man shower is under 25 minutes long (nearer 5 minutes), as opposed to a women shower (in this house anyway) which never seems to be less than this.

Food done, blogging done, kit sorted for a weekend of running done, so it must be time for some more food and a Cider.

Bring on parkrun tomorrow.

269/365 Its hard not to take it personally! 5K by Big Kev

269/365 Its hard not to take it personally! 5K by Big Kev

It was an early run around Leigh Woods this morning as I needed to be up and out quick smart. I had a day of golf planned with a corporate sponsor and as I hadn't swung a club at all this year, I didn't now what to expect. The good news was that the warm up round in the morning allowed me to find my stride for the afternoon. I actually finished 4th for the day, so I was pleasantly surprised as this was using 3/4 of my stated handicap. Now for those golfer out there, you will appreciate that 27 holes in one day is a very long walk. I do believe this put me at an advantage though, as the huge number of miles I have covered this year meant that my fitness has never been higher. In the past I have felt shattered after 18 holes let alone 27, and I couldn't imagine running a 5K in under 24 minutes before tackling all of that as well. Boom!

Being all buoyed up from the day did make the news of not getting a place in next years London marathon a little easier to deal with. However as I have now been applying every year since 2009 it hard not to take the rejection personally, especially as other people I know have got back to back places, Grrrrrrrr.

However my challenge will not be influenced by next year just yet, as there is still plenty of running to do this year.

268/365 Club 6 mile run after a productive day. by Big Kev

268/365 Club 6 mile run after a productive day. by Big Kev

It been a fully packed day with work taking up all the the daylight hours, quite literally. As the mind had been occupied all day, this evening was set aside for the pleasure of running. It didn't disappoint, I joined our 6 mile group tonight and picked a pace that meant I could have a good chat with all those around me.

The winter route circles Redland, Westbury-on-Trym, Sea Mills and Stoke Bishop. Whilst running on the pavements is not my favourite surface the route is well lit and relatively safe. It is also a quite a demanding route with a real sting in the tail as towards the 5 mile mark we have to tackle Stoke Hill. After that though the route flattens and descends back to the club so you can catch your breathe and talk about future plans.

For me the race plans now centre around just 5 races and 1 big run; Oldbury 10, Cardiff half, Portishead half, Christmas Cracker, Clevedon boxing day run and of course my big run on New Years eve.

Please keep checking on the facebook page for more details of the New Years Eve event and let me know if you would like to run/help out on the day.

267/365 Well that didn't go to plan! 5K by Big Kev

267/365 Well that didn't go to plan! 5K by Big Kev

As with every day in the Caple household it starts with the best of intentions! That's the plan anyway. This morning started well with the delivery of our new hob before 8:00pm, meaning I could get to work after quickly connecting it and dropping it into the hole the old one has come out of. Well the first bit went well and to cut a long story short the hole took me the rest of the day to sort out. As this distraction was unplanned, as most distractions are, it meant that the running took a bit of a back seat.

I finally got around to thinking about the running after I had cleared the email inbox from the days inevitable requests. In addition to planning for this evenings appointment. Once done it was closer to 6:00pm than I would have liked, so I didn't hang around on the run and got it done quickly. I do love my Leigh Woods loop as it ticks all of my running boxes. It has hills (the up and down variety), Trails, Woodland, road and the contrast between the busy and the quiet. I am very lucky.

The rest of this week should be a little more structured as I have the GWR club run tomorrow and then SRC on Thursday with the aim being to run parkrun on Saturday and then the Oldbury 10 on Sunday. So should any of you out there want to join in on a run with me you know where I am.

266/365 Squeezed in at lunch 5K by Big Kev

266/365 Squeezed in at lunch 5K by Big Kev

Monday mayhem always means that I have to balance the requirements of work against the need to keep the challenge on track. This Monday however presented the perfect interlude at lunchtime to allow me to get out and back before the mayhem resumed. I have found that lunchtimes are all about the miles and less about the event and this one was followed suit. I find that the 22 minutes or so is just enough of a reset to allow me to come back with a clear mind, but ask me what i saw, thought or to a degree went on my run and I would struggle. This is a marked difference to my weekend runs, where these tend to be constructed to create the most enjoyment from the time on my feet.

All that said though, the benefit of the run still far outweighs the effort involved.

A thank you to all of you that have sponsored me over the last few days as we continue to march toward the end of the year.

265/365 10 lovely local miles, the countdown begins by Big Kev

265/365 10 lovely local miles, the countdown begins by Big Kev

Being a Sunday I do try an get a longer run in and its hard to believe that its been a week since Bristol Half marathon. I joined up with my parkrun/Long Ashton running buddies for a trot around Leigh woods, Abbots Leigh and Aston Court. We were a little uncertain of logistics as Brisfest was being held this weekend in the middle of Ashton Court, so it was a pleasant surprise to find all the paths and car parks open. However not having this information to hand lead me to take my bike rather than run down. Now I will state for the record that cycling up the hill and across to Ashton Court from home was really very weird. I have run this route at least 100 times this year and it almost felt like I was cheating!

Still when I got to Ashton Court and hooked up with everyone the run, route and sights soon reminded me how simple and beautiful this running lark really is.

So the count down begins, I have reached 265 which means that there are just 100 runs left of this challenge, which does in turn mean that its 100 days left of the year WOW!

264/365 A jaunt across the Downs 5K by Big Kev

264/365 A jaunt across the Downs 5K by Big Kev

A simple run today and not too challenging. I dropped Jess and Jasmine into the city centre for a spot of shopping and then drove up to the Suspension Bridge. From there I headed back across the bridge and up on to the Downs. Once I had covered just over 1.5 miles I turned and headed back to the truck. I have been feeling a little weary over the last few days, which isn't a surprise and mean that I didn't actually get up to get out to parkrun.

Tomorrow I would like to cover about 10 miles, but at a nice and easy pace. I may look for some running buddies, so drop me a line if you are out and about.

Not every run will have highlights worthy of note and today was just one for those. These kind of runs just need to be done.

What is of note is the continued support I am getting via facebook and just giving.

Going forward I will be bringing out the sponsorship forms at the start of the 100 day count down, so if you would like one and help me out, then once again just drop me a line.

263/365 Road tripping & 5K by Big Kev

263/365 Road tripping & 5K by Big Kev

A long round trip today as Jess and I headed North to Loughborough University for its open day. It was a day full of surprises and future dreams and it was difficult not to be caught up in the endless opportunities. As an aspiring athlete I was fascinated not only by the facilities on offer, but also the roll call of athlete's who have graced the halls. It was great to see that Seb Coe (before the Lord bit) still holds the 800m record.

The journey home was a bit stop start, but Jess and I had a lot to discuss so the time flew by. A time of hard work and hard choices to come, exciting times

Once home and before the efforts of the day took hold I headed straight out. The sun was still out and the trails quiet as most people were still battling the Friday night traffic. I am now in a quandary on tomorrows run, do I enjoy the weekend lie in or do I head off to Parkrun (Littlestoke)? I think I will let the alarm clock decide and by alarm clock I do mean the cat!

Two days to go before the big 100 countdown!

One final point and another big thank you to the Bristol Post, some how I became the 5th most eye catching moment of the week. Eye catching!!! Still another big shout out to Macmillan so thank you.

262/365 Out and back 5K by Big Kev

262/365 Out and back 5K by Big Kev

A very technologically challenging day today. I can easily deal with the run365challenge as I am in control of my own responses and responsibility. However stray from that field and everyones opinion/point of view only throws up another potential solution/distraction depending on which side of the fence you sit.

That aside the run today was brisk and in the last throws of daylight, so the upside here were the colours in the sky and the huge full moon to gaze at. I kept it simple as the miles again this week have been creeping up, so an out and back from home to cover the minimum 5K.

I have a very busy day on the road with Jess tomorrow as we are off to Loughborough Uni, lets hope the weather behaves and we can see it in all its glory. I will take the kit bag, just in case I can sneak a run in somewhere nice on the way home.

Its almost the weekend, bring it on!

261/365 A dark night with GWR 8 Miles by Big Kev

261/365 A dark night with GWR 8 Miles by Big Kev

That’s it, it’s now official, Summer is over! We have had to finally submit to the darkening evenings and change our running routes from summer to the winter. For me this meant the seasonal changes are coming full circle as I started this challenge on our winter routes. I am very close to the 100 day count down and the winter route brings with it a sharp focus on the need for safe running. Last night I ran with a head torch and tonight I had the full reflective kit on. This means the daylight running will once again be limited to either a lunchtime or weekend run, sad times.

Our winter route leaves the Tennis club at Redland and then across the Downs and along Falcondale Road. A sharp turn in Westbury-on-Trym takes me along Canford lane and through Sea Mills. We then turn at Sylvan Way traffic lights and head into Sea Mills, another turn at the junction with the Mill House pub heads us toward Sea Mills Harbour. From there we are back on the Portway and heading toward the Clifton Suspension Bridge and readying ourselves for the climb up Bridge Valley Road. After a quick breather allowing everyone to catch up, we head past the Zoo and back toward Redland. 8 miles later and we are back at the Tennis Club, Wednesday night club run done!

A would like to say a big thank you to all my fellow GWR runners for their kind words about the Bristol Post article and their offers of support for the end of year event. Additionally a thank you to all my facebook friends for their offers of help and for joining the event at the end of the year, please feel free to share the event as everyone is welcome.

So there is no going back now! Today I had an article published in the Bristol Post and even a comment from the editor which was very special.

The hits also keep on coming on the Facebook page, thanks to everyone.

Additionally and most importantly so have the sponsorships, I have just passed the £1,000 mark. A special thank you to Andy Gunter for tipping the balance!

www.justgiving.com/kevin-caple

So the only thing left to do today was to go for a run, simple right? Well I only just made it, as I was up before dark and didn't get home until well after dark. Only having 4 hours of the day left to get a run in can be quite nerve racking! However following all the great press I have got it done and I even missed the rain, brilliant.

The final comment on the blog, goes out to all of those who have enquired about the last run on New Years Eve. I have created an event on the facebook page and will continue to post updates on the logistic as we get closer to the date and time. To give everyone the heads up though, it will be on New Years Eve (obvious) and it will be at 1:00pm at a location in/close to central Bristol.

Log on to the facebook page and join the event!

Thank you all for your support.

259/365 Out early while the sun is still shining 5K by Big Kev

259/365 Out early while the sun is still shining 5K by Big Kev

Following the half marathon exploits of yesterday I made the bold decision to get the legs moving early and get out before the rain sets in. The weather forecast for the next few days is pretty awful, so whilst there are reasonably clear skies and not too much wind, I thought I had better just get on with it. The legs are tired, but not raced hard and I was therefore able to maintain a moderate pace without too much discomfort. Being out before 8:00am always means the trails are quiet and I can play my music as loud as I want, without fear of being run over by a hoard of mountain bikes.

I am hoping today that my article appears in the Bristol Post and if it does I will link to it via the blog later.

So with the run done its time for a shower and then head into the office for a full days work.

Extremely wet and windy and my watch kept losing it's satellite signal and going mad. Stopped and re-set 3 times and hoped it would save the runs individually but once again it hasn't, grrr. Given the conditions and that this is the furthest I've run in a while was pleased with my efforts. Feel for the people who have run the Great North today given how windy it is out.

Angie - Day 257 - 1m Slaithwaite

For some reason my Garmin has not saved this run :-( annoying as was the fastest I'd run for a very long time at 8.15 mins. Went to play badminton but as they were late in setting up the court had a run first. Very flat stretch of road hence the quick time.

258/365 Bristol Half marathon pacing 13.1 miles by Big Kev

258/365 Bristol Half marathon pacing 13.1 miles by Big Kev

There is aways something special about a race day and as the Bristol Half marathon is our biggest local run, it brings with it an extra element of excitement. I had prepared well for today, as I was pacing a group of runners at 1:40 and didn't want to let them down. I do love giving something back and pacing is a great way to lift others to new heights and share in their elation as they cross the line.

Today went perfectly to plan, I met with my group of runners and then entered the start pens, said hello to a lot of friendly faces and then set about the task at hand. Along the way I can across another pacer attempting the 1:40:00 target and wished him well on his journey. I had a consist time of 7:30 minute per mile as my guide, knowing that with the twists and turns ahead we where likely to cover a little more distance than needed. There are also 2 climbs in quick succession around castle park (between 11 and 12 miles, nice) that can really sap the legs, so I wanted a little in reserve to cover this off.

The first half is out and back along the Portway and under the Bristol Suspension Bridge, it is relatively flat and open, so it easy to maintain an even pace. The handwork comes as you leave the Portway and then navigate the Cut and up to Prince's Street Bridge. This is always a good point for me as I know Tina and Jess will be there waving and cheering and I always steel a kiss along the way. We then enter the numerous twists and turns and a lot of focus is needed to make sure the pace doesn't drop too much. Before you realise it you are then at the first of the 2 climbs around Castle park and its 2 miles to go. With continued encouragement my group have worked hard and we are bang on target (as we have been from mile one). I tell those that are feeling strong to push on and and go and get their own PB's and then focus on making sure no one gets left behind.

We enter the home straight opposite the Bristol Hippodrome and everyone is working hard, we have kept the pace perfectly and should be in on time. I cross the line in 1:39:20 as a few people in the group had started in front of me and needed a bit of a buffer.

With the line crossed there are a lot of smiles and hugs, as many a new PB has been set. I hand out some of my run365challenge cards and look forward to a new set of followers.

All in all a great day. Time for a shower and lunch with the girls.

www.justgiving.com/kevin-caple

Well done to everyone and all those new PB's, cherish them as its an amazing achievement.

257/365 Bath Uni and Ashton Court 3.5 Miles by Big Kev

257/365 Bath Uni and Ashton Court 3.5 Miles by Big Kev

It felt like a normal work day today, with the alarm clock going off and then the shower starting before even before daylight had broken! It was part 2 of our uni tour with Jess and today destination was Bath University. Being only 16 miles away the relatively early start wasn't that necessary I am sure. However we had booked the first Business/Management lecture, so needed to be in and settled by 10:30. We were obviously there in plenty of time and used it wisely by looking at the campus and the accommodation on offer. Jess has a very defined set of criteria for her Uni and with the grades she is aiming for, who can blame her.

Bath even though it is one of the best in the country for the degree she is looking for, didn't have the right vibe. Now, considering she will be spending 4 years (on and off) there, the right vibe is very important. So once satisfied (or not in this case) off we trot back to Bristol and no sooner are we home, than Tina and I are back out. In my case I am running and in Tina's case she is cycling on Betty (see previous blog 252/365). As we live about half way up a hill just off the main A369 there is no polite way to ease yourself into your run/cycle its more of an arrrrgh which ever way you go. We chose the downhill finish which in turn meant the uphill start. Now all credit to Tina as she hasn't cycled much lately, so forcing yourself as far as you can, up the first hill is one mean feat. However Tina seems to have found a new Turbo feature on her bike (her words), which consist of her puffing hard while peddling as fas as she can uphill and then me starting to push her whilst I continue to run!

The upside to the first half effort is that the second half will repay you with some nice down hill sections and with the weather holding out we had some laughs as well. Once home and chores completed its time to blog, cook an early dinner and then settle down to a night in front of the TV. Jess being a Marvel geek (her words) has been treated to Ironman 3 on DVD, so I am guessing the TV schedule is also sorted.

I have backed my bag and sorted out my race kit and shirt for tomorrow.  Therefore I can now enjoy the evening and look forward to running with all the people taking part in Bristol Half Marathon.

Good luck to all the runners and may the conditions be fair.

Went out at lunch. Tummy issues which seem to be getting the norm these days :-( so completed 2.2 miles, stopped for loo break, then went out and ran another mile. Few twinges in my right hamstring, leg so booked a massage for next Thursday :-).

Busy at work so didn't run at lunchtime as usual. Went when I got home. Shortish run but then tried the 'shred' 20 minute DVD straight after. Don't want to lose weight but it's supposed to be good at building muscle so will give it a go :-)

256/365 An increase in profile 5K by Big Kev

256/365 An increase in profile 5K by Big Kev

Tonights run was a little delayed due to some extra exposure for the challenge. The Bristol Evening Post has kindly agreed to run (another good pun) an article on what has been done and why and what is coming up.

The article is being put together over the weekend and tonight the photographer came across to take a few snaps. The weather this evening gave us some interesting shots and I am excited to see how they have turned out. To give you a taster, Jess took a candid shot of the subject matter being photographed, by the photographer.

After that and without a moments hesitation I set off on my familiar route into Ham Green. However when I reached the school I realised that I hand't applied Garmin rule #3 (check the satellite signal before setting off). I had therefore run over a mile without it being logged, Doh! Never mind I was wet anyway and its the end of the working week for me. Tomorrow brings another Uni open day (Bath this time) which means no Parkrun in the morning and then Bristol Half Marathon on Sunday.

For those that don't know I am pacing (unofficially) a group of people who would like to break 1:40:00. I am in wave 1 and therefore suggest that we meet by the Stag Beetle in between Millennium Square and Blue Reef at 8:15am. I look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday.

255/365 Angry drivers 5K by Big Kev

255/365 Angry drivers 5K by Big Kev

Well I suppose its official, the nights  have drawn in. When I finally got around to running today it was just about dark and it was only 7:33pm. By the time I got back it was definitely dark and wet as the rain had also set in, welcome to Autumn Kev!!

It must be a condition of the darkening evenings that bring out the angry drivers, I heard a lot of horns tonight and I only ran for 5K. The main A369 of which our home's road spurs off from, has been closed all week from 8:00pm to 6:00am for resurfacing and only residents have access. As an aside, the noise and smell of fresh tarmac at 3:00am is not something I will ever get used to! The angry drivers tonight were venting their frustration and abuse at the road workers because they would not let them drive through the road block. This is despite the signs informing the road users of the road closure for at least a week before it closed and the 4 'ROAD CLOSED' signs they passed before reaching the road block. One driver got out of his German coupe (other models are available) and thought that shouting at the road workers and stating the bleeding obvious would make them more inclined to let him through, it didn't. Doesn't he know stress is a killer!

The blog and data have taken a little longer than usual to get organised tonight, as my present from the girls arrived yesterday and I was overly keen to use it before reading the manual (a man trait I have heard). So I have just spent the last hour panicking that I might have to go out for another run, but all is now good in the Caple household. The girls have purchased me a lovely shiny brand new Garmin 310xt, as my every faithful 305 had started to become very glitchy. Thanks girls its fab.

Lets see what tomorrow brings, another minimum distance I think and possibly and interview and some pictures, hmmmm!

254/365 A tough day and the club 6 miles by Big Kev

254/365 A tough day and the club 6 miles by Big Kev

For lots of people around me at the moment its been a tough day, or week, or even month and yet we all find the strength to carry on. The toughest point for me in the last few days was dropping off my eldest daughter some 200 miles away from home, as she has returned to Uni and its left a big hole. For others its been far worse and for some it was realising that they need to relearn their multiplication tables (that's tough, I wouldn't want to). What ever the challenge is at the moment I am happy to share the burden, if any, as the time I spend outside seems to wash away the worries and I come back refreshed.

However, tonight's club run perhaps took the washing away step a bit to far. The rain at one point was washing everything away, so much so that on reaching the top of Ashton Court I had a job to see properly!

With the count down to Bristol half marathon now in full swing, I think I will keep it to the minimums for the next few days and on Friday I might have something of extra interest to report!

Keep on smiling as tomorrow might be a better day than today.

253/365 6 miles with SRC and Leo by Big Kev

253/365 6 miles with SRC and Leo by Big Kev

Its been a manic day at work today with lots going on, but I was determined to get to Southville running club tonight on time. The club runs start at 6:30pm from South Bank in Southville and at 6:10pm I was still in the office in Portishead, some 9 miles away. Easy you would think, however with Bristol traffic to deal with I walked in at 6:35pm. Fortunately there were a lot of club announcements going on, so I had time to set the Garmin and gather my thoughts. Whilst gathering my thoughts though I hadn't paid enough attention to what group was going where and all I heard was towpath and about 6 miles. The distance worked and its nice and flat, so I went with it. What I hadn't realised was the use of the words 'interval training' in the sentence that proceeded towpath, Doh!

When we reached the towpath the whole group was haring off into the distance and I realised my tempo run was off the cards. Then a mile in I spotted Leo coming the other way, a perfect excuse to drop out, so I let the guys in front of me know and split off as all i would have done is hold them up.

It was great to catch up with Leo who was our doing a similar 6 miles. He filled me in on all the details of the weekends Gromithon completed by JPC and the team. Leo and I parted ways after a few miles and then I carried on into Bristol and around the harbour to make sure I reached my target 6 miles. The Garmin then cheered me up as it confirmed I had covered 6 miles in just under 45 minutes, bang on the tempo pace I wanted.

Looking forward to GWR tomorrow night, time for an 8 mile run I think, especially as it could be one of the last on the summer route.

252/365 Girls on their bikes 5K by Big Kev

252/365 Girls on their bikes 5K by Big Kev

Tonight's run was a laugh a minute. Tina's new bike arrived just before the weekend and it has not been until tonight that she could take it out properly. Whilst many of us want a new road or mountain bike with carbon fibre this and carbon fibre that, Tina has gone completely retro and I do mean retro!

Betty as she will be forever known, is a throw back from the 50's, she even has her own plastic effect wicker basket (go figure).

Well tonight was Betty's first true outing and there were obviously going to be some teething troubles, first the handle bars dropped for no apparent reason (they weren't done up, that was the reason) and then Tina complained that everything felt stiff (insert joke). It transpired that the front brake was well and stuck truly on, and yet the sheer will power of the woman meant that she just kept on riding. Funnily enough when I released the brake the bike seemed to free up and off she shot, chasing after Jess.

My run therefore whilst it had a few stops in the first mile or so, soon settled down and we still made it back in around 25 minutes. Both Tina and Jess still smiling so thats some achievement for us all!

I am certain the girls will be accompanying me again later in the week, I wonder what laughs that will bring.

251/365 A day on the road 5K by Big Kev

251/365 A day on the road 5K by Big Kev

With the sun shinning and the prospect of a long day on the road, it was an easy choice to go for a run first. I have only kept it to the minimum today, as I am conscious that in a weeks time its the Bristol Half Marathon and there is no need for an extra miles today. The route today was a simple out and back from home to Ashton Courts gate house. the initial climb for the first half of a mile is a short sharp wake up call so by the time I have reached half way and I am thinking about the return trip, I certainly have a sweat on.

Today is also the day we take Katie back to Kent Uni in Canterbury, so we have a long journey ahead of us. The girls being as organised as ever already have all of Katie's stuff boxed up and ready to be loaded into the truck. They also have their 'to do' bags ready (i.e. what have you to do on the journey), now in years gone by these 'to do' bags would have pens and paper, toys and sweets galore and more than enough to share around. However now that my girls are effectively adults, their 'to do' bags are filled with laptops, homework, kindles and iPods. The journeys therefore have become more productive for them whilst being so much quieter and I am not sure if this is a good thing on not, plus I do miss the sweets!

The final word today goes to the 10kx365 crew, Neil, JPC and Alfie. They are completing there very own version of the Gromit Marathon today and I am really pleased to see the weather is being kind. I hope they raise a lot of awareness, a lot of smiles and in turn a lot of money for there good causes.

250/365 A big day all round 5 miles by Big Kev

250/365 A big day all round 5 miles by Big Kev

Today really has been a big day all round. It started early this morning as Jess had her first Uni open day to attend in Exeter. A very big first! Then once home I trotted off and completed the 250th day of consecutive running along some of my most favourite trails. Finally, we then start packing Katie up ready to return to the University of Kent for her second year and therefore her first time living off campus and fending for herself, Boom!

A crazy time in the Caple household and yet none of us have lost sight of what makes all the change necessary and important. Our girls have been brought up under no illusion that the world is tough and even if you work as hard as you can, it sometimes doesn't always go your way. We can't know whats around the corner, so we enjoy all the time we have together and try not to argue to much and instead laugh as much as we can.

Today runs was very much like that, I changed after coming back from Exeter all buoyed up as it looked like I would get out before the rain set in. However, in my rush last night to get the blog out I forgot to turn of the Garmin! Therefore instead of lapping up the sunshine, I endured another episode of Downton Abbey whilst the Garmin charged and then as soon as I set off the rain came in. You could say, I am working hard and thats a tough break. But I am reminded that at least I am out running even if its in the rain and this is the 250th day of consecutive running and how many people can say they have done that. So Caple, get over it and enjoy the rain, I did!

Not sure when I am going to run tomorrow, might be first thing or might even be in Canterbury, let see?

249/365 6 miles and lots of new facebook friends by Big Kev

249/365 6 miles and lots of new facebook friends by Big Kev

Firstly let me say hello and welcome to all my new facebook friends, Katie, Jess and James have done a sterling job today of increasing the fan base and I thank them dearly. For those of you new to the format of the daily blog, I tend to cover 2 things, a little bit about my day and whats affecting it and then a bit on the run itself. I will also and when appropriate, cover off the good work Macmillan are doing either for people I know or how they are helping me with this challenge. As a quick up date (the clue's in the title) today is the 249th consecutive day I have run at least 3 miles outdoors. I have actually covered 1125 miles in 145:17:53 (Hrs:Min:Sec). So lets get on to it:

Tonights run has come at the end of a very long week and a particularly early start. I attended the Portishead Chamber of Commerce quarterly breakfast meeting this morning and caught up on the hot topics and local affairs. This meant the run needed to be sandwiched in between and early dinner and our scuba diving friends this evening. Tonights guests are coming over to view all of their hard work completed in Gozo in August and is captured in the photographic form and in a various formats. To start, the standard slideshow has been adapted to stop one and all falling asleep and then they have their very own photobooks to take away and treasure forever!

The run tonight was contemplative as there has been lots of news this week, none of it insurmountable, but just lots of it. There is no need for details, just to say that me, my own and those closest to me could have done with a lots less of it. This is one of the reasons I run, to find that Zen like state where you can forget the here and now and just concentrate on the simple matters.  Ones like, breathing right, holding good form and watching where you place your feet, beyond that I find everything else takes care of itself.

The 6 miles were of no preset route just at a pace I felt comfortable with and then I let the miles take care of themselves.

So here's to a very busy weekend, Exeter and Canterbury and somewhere a run every day.

Keep on share and keep on liking.

248/365 5 excellent miles with Jamie by Big Kev

248/365 5 excellent miles with Jamie by Big Kev

Todays run has come after a day of shocks and surprises and was just excellent! Excellent in the fact that I could catch up with and chew the fat with Jamie (we didn't chew any fat though, promise). If this challenge has taught me anything, then its to enjoy the company of the person running next to you and I really do enjoy the company of Jamie. We share stories and put the world to rights, but in a way that really won't upset anyone as most of it is just a way of venting.

We headed out from home and through Leigh Woods, left at Paradise bottom and then onto the towpath. Once there it is another left and along the towpath to Ham Green Lake. From there its the climb up through Ham Green, past the cricket club, past the school and up the hill to home. By the time we have had a lap of the road we have covered just over 5 Miles and its time to say our goodbyes.

Not for too long though as our time spent together is enough to hatch a few cunning plans and form a plot for next year!

I am feeling a bit more like normal today and whist again I have covered more than the minimum, I have done so at a pace good enough for a chat. I would recommend that pace to anyone and at any time.

The weekend is looming and we have so much on I may get a little side tracked on the blogs, so be warned nothing is untoward if I am missing for a day!

247/365 An eventful day 5K by Big Kev

247/365 An eventful day 5K by Big Kev

Lets start with the run today, I had intended to get out first thing this morning, but the body and mind said no! This was down to two things, first and foremost the sheer effort of last nights AXA 5.5 mile road race and secondly the lack of sleep.  So the run today was completed at then end of the working day which was most agreeably cut short due to the heat and our late finish yesterday.

The bits in-between have been mostly manic and with it, mostly family orientated. Importantly though, all major education disasters have been averted and the potential nuclear melt down avoided. We are therefore all looking forward to our celebrations with Lauren this evening, where we will be helping her usher in a significant birthday.

I am thinking a few more minimums this week might be in order?

246/365 AXA 5.5 mile road race by Big Kev

246/365 AXA 5.5 mile road race by Big Kev

What a lovely evening for a run, if a little warm for some, but a lovely evening none the less. I had been invited along to the AXA 5.5 mile road race tonight by Jonathan Goodland. It is primarily a team race, but you can also just come along and run on your own. Being a team event there were lots of chatter and banter from the respective teams both internal and with their perceived competition. The teams are mostly made up of work colleagues, with a sprinkling of overly keen and the less keen (I mean press ganged), as well as the odd ringer! The aim of the evening though was to raise funds for Cancer Research and the initial indication are that a £1,000 has been raised, so all in all a great effort.

By pure coincidence my sister was at the event as she seem to be part of the organising committee for her school who had entered a team. Regardless of the haranguing from her work colleagues thought, she wasn't going to convinced to run with everyone else. On balance this was probably a good choice as the heat made it difficult for everyone regardless of conditioning or ability.

For my own efforts, I can report that even following the comments of the past few days where I have said I might consider taking it easy, I have in fact placed 10th in 35:00.

This running everyday lark must be doing something right!

Once again well done to all of the people in the background that arrange and manage the event and for all the people who support it, from runners to spectators, a thoroughly lovely evening.

245/365 Lunchtime meander in Gloucester 4 miles by Big Kev

245/365 Lunchtime meander in Gloucester 4 miles by Big Kev

With my new shoes on I wander off from the office with a plan of covering 4 miles and to find out if this got me to the local farm market shop. Well the shop is about 1.75 miles away, so I had a little way to go up the A40 before I had covered the required 2 miles. The route is mostly pavement and cycle track so no real terrain issues to contend with. I had no intention of running quickly as the legs are still a bit heavy from the last week, so overall I was pleasantly surprised by the average pace.

This bodes well for tomorrows AXA 5 Road Race, but as I said yesterday, I am almost certain that I won't race as hard as I might.

Its great to know that I am now in the last third of the challenge, as September signals 4 months left!

244/365 6 miles and the Kite Festival by Big Kev

244/365 6 miles and the Kite Festival by Big Kev

I took advantage of the weekend and held off my run until mid afternoon. Ashton Court was the main destination today as the Kite festival was in full flight. Its a great loop as I can cut through Abbots Leigh Pool and then onto the top plato of Ashton Court. Once there the spectacle was amazing, people everywhere enjoying the conditions and their own family time. On one of the side slopes it was like a scene from Mary Poppins, genius!

After leaving the grounds I headed into Leigh Woods and enjoyed the comparative quiet. From there its a meandering loop back toward home and a nice shower and the prospect of another wonderful Sunday roast.

I am looking forward to an easier week as the last month has been full on and was actually the highest monthly total so far. 144 miles for the month and I have also passed the 1095 mile mark, so that the 3 miles a day distance ticked off!

I do have the AXA 5 on Tuesday, but I am certain, I probably, might not consider racing too hard!

A final thanks to Ninja (our cat) for helping with todays blog, the cats playing with the mouse!

Bring on my Gloucester lunchtime run tomorrow.
